CONCORD - The New Hampshire Historical Society came up short in a bid to obtain a collection of letters and other papers from former President Franklin Pierce.

Bill Dunlap, president of the historical society, said the collection would have been a nice acquisition, but was too pricey for the nonprofit to stay in the bidding through a New York City auction house on Tuesday.
