Not that we would want to buy from this source necessarily, but it occurs to me we may want to use high-bay lighting with 12 foot ceilings rather than simulating tubes.

My retrofit kits are great if you have old troffers or other linear fixtures to use for the sheet metal, but if you are starting from scratch, there are other solutions that are designed to give efficient lighting with high ceilings.

In any case, I'll bring a kit next time I go to AR to install in the dead fixture in the clean shop so you can all see what that would look like.

I think switching to LED's are a fantastic idea and would help with our electric bill. My only thought is we need to still spend smartly when buying LED lights and evaluate. That might mean function over form.... :(

I have one comment about LED lights and cost savings. I switched to all LED at home about a year ago. From my experience you only get the full savings amount they list if you are replacing an incandescent bulb you left on year round. I saw very small drops in my electric bill from light replacements because I don't typically leave lights on.

yeah, the on-the-box savings are from incandescent. they are only like 2W better than a CF, but I've found they turn on faster, produce a better color temp, and are more durable and thus last longer.

conversion from tubes is a bigger difference, especially the older ones.

LED tubes are also nice because when you drop them they don't explode and send mercury powder all over the place. You will for sure save on 'labor' with LEDs as they last much longer.

LED life can be significantly shorter if the design allows the die to get too hot - then the die die. :) I had two Cree bulbs (the older glass cased ones) die after about a year of use and these were not on 24/7. Really surprised because I have a number of other bulbs - same style and brand from the same time that are still working fine and Cree is reported to be a good, reliable brand. I haven't sent them in for warranty yet.

Early in the introduction of LEDs bulbs I bought a couple bulbs from Sams that both lasted about a month, again, not on 24/7.
So the life claims may not be true, especially if they are off brand bulbs.

That's not saying LEDs aren't great. I think the are. Just don't believe everything you read...

I've got 10 of various brands, including the cree, that are all at least 2 years old, with several used at least 4-6 hours a day 4 are in ceiling can lights with the fans running 24/7. none are in enclosed fixtures. none have died. I do have pretty clean power in this area though, maybe that make a difference

Just an FYI on this subject since I believe that when this thread was started a year ago it was about the lights for the new space. We have come to the conclusion that we need to go to LED in the dirty shop just because of the electrical capacity of the building. It only has a 200 amp service currently, EACH compressor for the AC pulls 30 amps initially when it kicks on and current florescent bulbs in the shop we figure are just below 40 amps. Add in 3d printers, laptops, the laser, power tools, anyone working up stairs, and so on; we are probably quickly approaching the 200 amp limit. So if we can cut that 40 amps in half and stretch that 200 further, we should. Plus, as Bob mentioned a lower utility bill. Since Gavin has generously already donated the LED strips to convert these why wouldn't we. Niels has started installing these and it is pretty easy if you can run a screw driver and wire strippers. It can also be done in piece meal chunks of like 30 minutes. So if you can't dedicate a full day to one of the build sessions, but would like to help with the build out this might be a good project for you to pitch in on.
