I have been working on building a DIY Soapbox inspired by a blog post on Wistia.com for use in the Arch Reactor Hackerspace and eventually available to be checked out by members.

Here's a quick video about the device and their software:

Introducing Soapbox by Wistia — Wistia

If you have any questions, please post them here or ask me via direct message. For now, I've stored this gear on a table in the classroom, but a longer-term storage space will likely need to be found.

It is a simple and portable wooden box with an LED light, a Blue Snowball Ice microphone, and a Logitech webcam attached to it. All three are connected to a USB hub which gives the user a single USB cable to connect to their laptop. That way, the equipment is portable and can be placed anywhere in the hackerspace to record a video. Packed in a storage tub, it could easily be transported to another site. There is also a small white power strip inside of the wooden box.

If you are interested in checking it out further, follow this link and create an account with Wistia's Soapbox website.  They will provide a few intro videos to explain how the free service works.

The Soapbox screen and webcam recorder add-on to the Chrome browser allows anyone to quickly create recordings of themselves, their computer screen, or both at the same time through the microphone and webcam.  Alternatively, the microphone or webcam could be used with any software the user has access to for quickly and conveniently creating content for podcasts or videos while sitting in front of a webcam with a decent extra light and a microphone.

Please click this Soapbox by Wistia link and create an account.  You can use your own camera, microphone, and light at home or in the office to try it out. The device I built is not necessary to create content, it just makes getting started more convenient.
Their website will provide a few intro videos to explain how the free service works.

If you create a video using their software, please share it with the rest of us!

(You may be tempted at some point, but please refrain from cannibalizing any of the parts or equipment from the Soapbox. All of the parts are needed for it to function correctly and as intended)

This link is to their original blog post about the hardware. I had meant to include that in the original post itself.

Here is another video that shows some ways to integrate and use videos recorded with their software:

And yet another video (much like the one embedded in the original post, but shorter and crisper.

So just read through all of there stuff. Am I understanding it correctly that the cost of using there software is that you basically lose all control over the content? You can't download the video and it is permanently hosted only on their servers?

The suggested software is a convenience. The hardware in one place is a convenience. It can be utilized as the person using it sees fit, depending upon their experience and comfort level.

OBS might be a option as you can save/stream to various locations.
