It's official! Lab:Revolution down in Farmington is going to be a MakerCorp site this summer! We are so excited to be taking part in this program!!

We're not sure of all the details yet but one thing is certain, we will be hiring two part time summer staff to do Maker Stuff with our kids and families.

You can check it out here: http://makered.org/makercorps/

As soon as we have our job descriptions written, I'll pass them along. I'd appreciate it if you would help spread the word to anyone who might be interested.

That is great! Congratulations! Out of curiosity, were you able to get a grant with this as well? I don't pretend to stay current on grant opportunities, but it would be good to know for the future.

I only know a few people that are very local to you, but I'll happily pass it along for them to share.

Grant apps are closed for this year, but we could think about doing one for next year: http://makered.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Maker-Corps-2015-Program-Description.pdf

Thank You!

Yes, we did receive a grant that will pay for almost all of the cost of the program. I'm not sure if the grant aspect was originally announced with this year's program announcement. I didn't see it, if it was. It was just a few days before the deadline when I noticed that there were some grants available to implement, so we applied.

Now the challenge is to nail down the details for an 8 week maker program for 25 youth ages 8-13 and 10 youth ages 13-18. We have been working with just a few families, and our space isn't very large. It's going to be a challenge...

You guys have been doing this a lot longer than we have. If you have ideas to share, I'd love to hear them. Things that worked well in programs you've done for kids... The types of things that you think are really foundational for young makers....

Maybe we could also do a field trip to your space during the program, with a smaller subset of kids. We are building a 3D printer, but don't currently have a functioning one, and we don't have a laser machine. It would be great to expose the kids to what can be done with those tools.

If we arrange it enough in advance that I can take a day off work I'd be happy to help with laser-projects if you field-trip to Arch Reactor.

I would like to suggest that the kids should have already learned about vector images and would like to invite them to bring small projects to try. We can and likely will do some design and image prep on-site but that can take time and will cut into actual laser-time, especially if your group wants to cover other topics (like 3d printing) the same day.

awesome - thanks Di!   Our program will be taking place in June and July and we'll be nailing down the specifics in April, so hopefully that will be plenty of time.

Congratulations on the grant and your program. If a field-trip to Arch Reactor were to be planned during your program, I would recommend setting aside some time for the kids to work with / learn from the littleBits kits that we have.  Regardless of their ages, the littleBits are a great tool for teaching basic circuit building and opening up the creativity inside the mind of a child.

Alternatively, perhaps we can work out a way for you to checkout or borrow the littleBits kits during your summer program. The website is littlebits.cc if you would like to see what they are all about. We have several basic and deluxe kits. If you'd like to consider getting some kits of your own, I've heard that the closing radio shacks have them at up to 40% off.
