I've been looking into feasibility of a rPi 3 based countertop gadget to match the functionality of the venerable Chumby One, i.e. wifi, touch screen with relevant apps, and a built-in speaker.  On-board FM tuner and Li-ion battery would be nice, but lesser priority.

(Chumby was pretty clever with all the features included.)

SmartiPi Touch case+stand with the large backplate looks like an appealing enclosure:

This daughterboard sports a class D amp driving a 2W speaker, all allegedly capable of fitting into the case.

But, this assemblage becomes a significantly larger gadget than a Chumby.

Might anyone be aware of a similar case accommodating a 5" touch screen + speaker?  Something like this, but more ready-made?

Alternately, any leads on a higher grade 2-3W speaker that fits in tight enclosures?

Thank you.

speakers salvaged from a desktop LCD or a laptop would likely do, and sound pretty good if you can keep the little acoustic box they come in.

I've unfortunately become a bit zealous about casting broken laptops, etc, into recycling bins.  However, thanks for the tip, as the speaker assemblies themselves are readily Ebay-able.

The SmartPi Touch case with the large backplate could probably fit this little $4 mono audio amp plus this $4 speaker and have lots of room left inside. That speaker's dimensions are listed as 30mm x 70mm x 17mm and the backplate is 37mm deep.

I'd actually been searching around for reasonably precise drawings of the large SmartiPi backplate, to better understand its interior volume.  I'm wondering if the stereo amp and 2 speakers could fit.

Thus far, I haven't found anything besides the bounding-box dimensions given on the product page, along with indirect indication enclosed add-ons could fit inside the 100x100mm footprint of a VESA mount.

Nevertheless, both Amazon and Google/Lenovo appear determined to tread into this niche too, with their ~$200 8" Echo Show / 7" Smart Display.

You can take a look att KKSB cases 13-inch display stand case and is including the touchscreen from waveshare. It has integrated loudspeakers.
