spacemacs

I was wondering what the technical limitations to getting spacemacs running with aquamacs is. I really like the layout and integration of aquamacs but would really like to have the setup of spacemacs as well. I have tried to symlink .emacs to the .emacs.d/init.d as well as creating a stub .emacs file that just loads ~/.emacs.d/init.el but nothing works correctly.
