Hi,

I was wondering if these extensions that you have posted on your site will be eligible projects for the GSOC 2016.

Sorry if this sounds like a trivial question. I am interested in applying and would like to prepare myself ahead of time since the mentorship organizations and projects are accepted at the end of February, looking at the GSOC 2016 timeline. I want as much time as possible to prep for this program in hopes of being accepted to the GSOC.

Thank you very much. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi there Linh, thanks for your interest.

As mentioned in other threads in this forum, we don't really know if
we are going to be accepted for GSoC16. We were lucky enough to
participate in GSoC15 and GSoC12, and I'd say we will apply for the
2016 edition (cannot say for sure) but there's no guarantee that we'll
get in (or even that we will apply).

If we do get in, extensions is probably a project that will be worked
on, as there's still quite a bit of work to be done.

If you want to prepare, I would suggest that you sign yourself up for
a simpler bug fix at first, taking on a more complicated change after
that. That would give you a head start on the application (again, if
there is an application process for 2016 at all), but it wouldn't
guarantee anything other than that. Whatever you learn during the prep
time will probably be useful to you if you are interested in software
development, but that's as much as we can say, really.

cheers,
José

Awesome, I would definitely love to contribute, regardless if I get in the GSOC or not. I've always been meaning to contribute to the open source community but am always a little intimidated on where to start.

Are there forums that would help me get started in the Google Group?

You can find all the documentation you need to get started at:

Let us know how you get on!

Hi Jose,

I replied back to the Google Hangout post but I was wondering, you suggested me to get started on the simpler bug fix. Do you know where I could find that? I am trying to look for that file and can't seem to locate it anywhere.

Thanks :)

Regards,
Linh

Hi there, you can have a look at the issues list in github. Some are marked as 'bitesize' and/or 'help needed' and should be small enough to get started, but any issue in there that is not assigned would be up for grabs.

If you decide to work on something, leave a note in the issue and we can guide you a little.

Hi Jose,

I am installing the project on Eclipse and I was unable to find one of the jar file (appinventor/buildserver/build/classes/BuildServer/files) and I was unable to find the appinventor/lib/android/2.2 but was able to get 4.2.2. Is that not the same?

Sorry for these trivial questions. I just want to make sure my environment is set up right.

Thanks!

Regards,
Linh

Hi Lihn,

yes, 4.2.2 is the newest version in the system right now. Eclipse can
be a bit tricky to configure. Don't worry too much if you have some
errors in Eclipse, as long as everything compiles in terminal with
'ant', and Eclipse can 'see' enough libraries to allow you to edit the
parts of the code that you want, then it should be fine.

I would recommend you try IntelliJ. If you are a student, you can get
a free license for the ultimate edition, but if not, you can use the
community edition in the same way:
https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/#chooseYourEdition

cheers,
José
