You can write a component that encapsulates the GCM functionality. I am working on an integration with Aerogear Unified Push Server https://aerogear.org/push/
My code can be found here: https://github.com/josmas/app-inventor/tree/aerogear It's not finished, but feel free to reuse.

I hope we can see a working extension soon , it will be such a great functionality to have sort of GCM into App Inventor!
