Hello everyone,
I'm a PhD Student from France. The purpose of my thesis is to make an authoring tool dedicated to the mobile educational games design.
I am wondering if I can do that by adding an overlay to an existing authoring tool for mobile applications like AppInventor2 for example ?

I'm writing this to ask for your opinion about the idea of adding an overlay to the current client browser of AppInventor2. Is it technically possible ? I was reading the documentation but I felt a little bit lost between the chapters (actually hesitating between "how to add a component" and "the browser client") so if you understood my purpose, could you tell me on what chapter it would be better to focus please ?

Please feel free to ask me about any information about my thesis project or to give me some general advice about the hole process that I'm intending to do ...

Cheers

Hi Aous,

I don't really know what you mean by 'adding an overlay to an existing tool'.

Improving gaming support on App Inventor would be a great thing to do,
but to do so, you are going to have to create components, and probably
make some changes to the Designer, so both documents you mentioned
above would be important for any work you want to do.

cheers,
José

If you mean to be able to do AI2 development from a tablet, see this thread ...

Hi Jos,

Thank you for your reply.
I may be didn't found the correct term to describe what I want to do. In french it's called "une surcouche", and that's what I meant with overlay.
Actually, It can be another interface, equipped with some game mechanics or elements interacting with the current designer interface. (the user will just be able to see the new interface).
I just wanted to know if connecting a such interface to the current one would be technically possible ?

Otherwise, It can be done as you said by adding components and making some changes (may be major changes) to the current designer interface.
Anyway, I have to look more closely to the entire documentation :)

Cheers,
Aous

For what I can see, a 'surcouche' would be like an add-on or plugin?
The way add-ons are done in AI is generally through either components
or extensions (still under test) but they are created in very similar
ways. Creating a layer on top of the existing system might not give
you enough access to the stuff you need to modify for gaming.

cheers,
José

I'm rather looking for connecting the current designer interface to another one more tailored to game design.
However this also very interesting. Thank you !

Okay, It's more clear to me now. Actually, It will be depending on how the layer is going to be developed. But I'm concluding that doing changes on the current interface would be better.. That's what I wanted to check. Thank you!
