I've just downloaded the latest image and have burnt it to an SD card. I've changed the boot priority to boot to this. I'm able to boot to the GRUB screen. I get to the message:

Detecting Android-x86.... found at /dev/sdc1

Then it reboots.

I've tried VESA mode and have chosen various mode eg. mode 311 640x480x16, but it always reboots.

I'm running an eeepc 900 with 2G RAM. I've downloaded the image from https://www.fosshub.com/Android-x86.html/android-x86-6.0-r3.iso

Obviously I don't want to erase my entire HD until it works in live mode.

Can somebody offer a solution?

This CPU (Celeron-M) is too old
to be supported.

Really? Is this why I get the same problem with my e6500 laptop, that has a Core2Duo P8600 cpu?

It's weird, because the live USB version works fine, but when I install it to a USB drive, it won't boot.

The same USB drive does boot and run great on my 1st gen i3 desktop computer...

Nope.
It's a booting issue that you need to figure it out
yourself. It's very device specific.

Some hints:
Does your device support UEFI or legacy boot?
Did you install the USB driver with the same boot type
that your device supported?

BTW, the latest iso that supports Eee PC 900
(and other family with Celeron-M CPU) is the
android-x86-4.0-r1-eeepc.iso:

https://osdn.net/projects/android-x86/releases/66419

Note Eee PC with newer Atom CPU are still supported
in 6.0-r3.

Just a hunch, but maybe try to install it to an EXT4 partition. I am seeing a few issues like this with a handful of devices on Bliss also.

I am very surprised by your answer : I have an eeepc G4 and I am running the latest debian 9 on it from an SD card without issue.
My concern is that this version hardly fit on the internal "hard drive" and I am searching for a light version that can be run from the internal drive.

The android-x86 6.0 does not boot, neither the android-x86 4.4

I will have a try with android-x86-4.0-r1-eeepc.iso

Surprised by what? Android requires more CPU instructions
than traditional Linux. See
