Framework / base / Dummy question

Hi dear list,

I ve been digging into the frameworks/base source code especially the telephony(manager) part. What "bothers" me in the current state is the fact that getImei like methods need permission.
I guess there is no point of providing patches to change the Java API for this class at least, so I was wondering, somehow, if it was possible to get this information (even via JNI) ?
