Build customized lockscreen apk from AOSP

Hello,

I'm new to android dev and would like to create a customized version of the stock lockscreen which would log failed pin attempts for example.

Could anyone point me in the right direction ?

Is there a way to create a simple apk one could install to have this customized lockscreen on their phone ?

Does one need to copy the whole launcher which would include this lockscreen ?

In both cases, could you please point me to where the source is for what is needed and how to build an apk from it ?
