let's start brainstorming some visions for a mission statement for AMRI here.

i guess we have to think about words like:
advance
manufacturing
research
institute
open-source
knowledge
learning

any others?

"quantitative methods" (a key part of documentable progress-- maybe a little clunky wording though?)
"resources" (academic resources for these projects)
"collaboration" (Makers and academics working to expand each other's skill sets)
"partnership" (between AMRI and industry maybe?  TBD)
"development" (hardware development, skill development)
"collaboration model" (a model for making progress in both academia and in the maker world)

I really loved the snippet of the blog that talks about bringing Maker community fundamentals (rapid execution, interdisciplinary collaboration, etc.) to an academic setting.

I might be oversimplifying, but I like the idea of bringing together researchers from different backgrounds (general community, open source community, academic, etc.), putting them in a program where all contribution has equal value, and seeing what happens.

^^ the thing that jumps out at me -- and what makes AMRI unique -- is that there isn't the snootiness of academic pedigree.  The program is focused on outcomes.

yes, this is excellent. we are having a discussion in the lab about mandating openness for projects vs. theoretically allowing AMRI projects to happen in private businesses. the MIT or Apache license philosophy vs. GPL ideals.

all the projects this year are not only online, they are being developed live online. so it will be important to a least get a statement encouraging openness if not mandating it.

what do you think?
