There seems to be a rumour going around that William Shatner is flying to SA to play Father Fogden.   This is a descriptions of Father F. in the book:

A slender man a bit taller than I, he had a lean face that might have been handsome if not disfigured by a reddish beard that straggled dust-mop-like round the edges of his chin.

Doesn't sound much like Father Fogden to me.  😲

Well, he is flying to SA, but I don't know if it is to play a role in Outlander.. maybe he's only visiting SA for a vacation.

I think they don't care too much on physical matching to the books on minor characters. The guy who played
Father Bain wasn't anything like his description, if I recall. (Comparing Fathers here). So long as the essence of the character is there, they'll be happy.

I think Shatner would be a hilarious drunk Father Flogden.

Nope - doesn't do it for me!  I don't think a 'celebrity' works for a small character part like Father Fogden (by the way broughps - like your typo - Flogden!). I am not so impressed with WS's acting abilities - too much playing to the gallery.

For some reason Flogden sticks in my head not Fogden.

I like it - suits him better.  I'm sure that's what he wanted to do to the sailors who ate his sheep - Ermintrude - no, it was called Arabella, I think?

There was more than one, but I think Arabella was the one he talked about.

Well, there are many 'celebrities' who played very insignificant roles on TV shows. A recent example I can think of: Ian McShane played a small role in Game of Thrones.. he only appears in one episode.. he dies in that very episode.. anyone can play his part if you ask me.

In terms of guest casting, Simon C. probably seemed such in Outlander, if you are from the UK and familiar w/ his work.

I think WS guesting in Outlander was inevitable, that he would play a quirky OTT character fits him.

I agree. But wouldn't they have to audition him first? I also believe that he's just visiting SA for vacation.

At this point WS doesn't audition for anything I'd venture to say. They either want him or they don't. That goes for any show.

Ohh?? Anyways.. IF. IF he's cast as Father Fogden, I'm sure he can pull it off. It was actually suggested by some Outlander fans long time ago. WS was like "I won't play him if he is anything like Father Bain". So, when WS announced on his twitter that he's flying to SA, the Outlander fans who interact with him came to the conclusion that he might be playing Father Fogden.

Well, with this tweet it look more and more likely that WS has landed a role in Outlander. Also, WS isn't responding to tweets asking if he landed a role in Outlander or not. Normally, he would. Dr. Stern would be more perfect for him, if you ask me.

Haa!! But I think Dr. Stern is perfect. Highly intelligent and all. Now jokes aside (yours and mine), I think IF WS was given a role it would be Dr. Stern.

On Jan 15th WS tweeted thisHey @MrStevenCree @Writer_DG & @SamHeughan I'm close to Jamaica so I asked these gentlemen if they knew the whereabouts of young Ian. 😗

Remember Dr. Stern accompanies Jamie and Claire inland for rescuing Young Ian? Point to be noted: WS didn't read any books to know about Young Ian's kidnap.

Also, Dr. Stern is a Jew.. and WS, who is also a Jew, would very much prefer to play Dr. Stern.

All this is a BIG IF. IF he was given a role in Outlander.

I don't think Dr. Stern, because they have already filmed the scenes with Geillis. Dr. Stern is with them when the rescue Ian, isn't he?

Also I don't think Dr. Stern was nearly 90.

AND there's the  hiring an American actor in a non SAG show problem.

I think he's just messing with the fandom and he's not really doing Outlander. He's probably starting to film this show of him something with "better later than never" ? He just wants to be a troll as usual.

Not in the cave, no. They must've filmed interior scenes with Geiliis.. and none of them involve Dr. Stern.

Oh wow!! He says he's visiting SA means he's messing with Outlander fans? Can't he have a vacation and inform his followers that he's visiting SA? I haven't seen him mention Outlander (or a tweet teasing the fans that he might be in the show) in any of his tweets regarding his trip to SA. Again, it's the fandom which is speculating.

I see you haven't watched any of his work? You know you can hate someone personally (even if you don't know ANYTHING about them) and appreciate their professional work at the same time?

Something similar that's happening now: I'm having hard time to wrap my around the protests against Casey Affleck winning The Oscar. They are protesting it because there was a sexual harassment allegation against him. I don't understand.. how is that relevant in him winning the awards? He did a fantastic job in the movie, impressed the voters, won the Oscar. And besides, they were allegations.. allegations that weren't proved.

I've seen enough of William Shatner to not be impressed in any way. He's a lousy actor IMO, sorry. And add to that a disgusting, old, unfunny, rude and terribly vain person.

So no. Not a fan.

But he can play father Fogden. Not much of a stretch. If he plays Howard Stern though, I think it will be a terrible miscast, but I'll live anyway.

Although Simon C was OK as the Duke of Sandringham - he is a good actor and his timing is usually successful, he is, unfortunately, nearly always playing Simon C as the character. If the character fits his character, then it all works well.

I see Father Fogden as a rather more quirky character than WS might portray.  Someone more like John Cleese, Michael Palin or maybe Hugh Laurie? But I rather doubt any of them would be available.

I also rather agree with Andorra's perception of WS - the man has twitter diarrhea.

I tend to intuitively 'like' or 'dislike' or be 'indifferent' to actors, regardless of my opinion of their 'talent'.  I think Sean Penn is a great actor, but a lousy human being, Christian Bale the same.   I am indifferent to SP in a movie, won't see it because he's in it, won't stay away because he is.  But w/ CB you have to take me kicking & screaming to see a movie he is in, I dislike him that much.  Generally I find out something about the actor's life or politics that explains my dislike

WS falls into the indifferent category for me, but I did find him unwatchable in that legal show.  I think he is 'Over The Top', and that was before I was aware of his bloviating Twitter personality.

I hope he's not Dr. Stern, because I expect him to return in Bees.

I don't think Dr. Stern's age matters unless he is Amaranthus' father. IF WS plays Dr. Stern, we can assume that Amaranthus isn't Dr. Stern's daughter. I'm sure Diana would intervene in those matters.
