If you are new to astronomy you might be interested in the Society for Popular Astronomy Starting from Scratch meeting to be held on Saturday 7th November 2015 in Dorking Surrey.

The posters have all the details – the event is located in Dorking so quite nearby.  Price is £10 per person including lunch so good value. Details of the centre where the event will be held are at http://www.field-studies-council.org/centres/juniperhall.aspx however this is not being organised by the field studies centre so all questions to the SPA at the email address on the posters.

There are currently about 20 places available so don’t leave booking too long. Admission is by ticket only – no payment at the door.

You do not have to be a member of the SPA to attend but since they hold some of the best astronomy talks why not join – it is only £18 per year. You get 6 copies of their magazine ‘Popular Astronomy’ for this as well as other benefits.

Issued on behalf of the SPA

Hi Roy,

The shop is no longer there – it moved to Rusper and then went into liquidation. Apparently the margins in selling Astro equipment are so small that they were unable to continue in business.

Regards

Hi John,

IO Astronomy has also ceased to sell Astro hardware and has now morphed into a company who are selling Astro mount servicing.

Hi John,

The story I heard from a reliable source were those companies owed a lot
of money to some of their suppliers who got a CCJ put on them.

It is true of course that astro equipment retailers don't make much
profit and those which run high street shops must find it very difficult
to survive with all the overheads such as rent, electricity bills, etc
they have to pay.

I didn't know IO Astronomy had gone into the mount servicing business. I
know there are a few companies in the US who do this and appear to do
well out of it.

In the UK another is - http://sctelescopes.com/about/ Steve
Collingwood was the guy who restored Patrick Moore's telescopes a while ago.

Hi John

Thanks for the link below. Steve Collingwood looked over and collimated my C11 a year or two ago when he still worked at Telescope House which is only about a 25 minute drive from me so was really handy. I was wondering what he was up to since he left TH so this info is really useful if I need to use his services in the future.

Best wishes

Hi Tim,

Yes, Steve decided to set up his business. From what Ian told me he's
got some great equipment including an optical bench for adjusting
collimation. Believe he can also collimate APO's which some models such
as Taks have adjustable cells for the lenses.

There can't be many people left now who still work for 'Telescope House'
formerly BC&F. They no longer have their shop in Lingfield, but saw on
the web they work out of some place near Edenbridge.

Its all a bit sad really. When I lived in the UK, I would go up to their
shop in Farringdon Rd. A great old place for telescopes and accessories.
When they moved it was the end of an era :-(

Cheers,
John
