A reminder for the 2nd Friday in February Astronomy Meetings:

 

The RAS have two parallel meetings as usual – see http://www.ras.org.uk/events-and-meetings/ras-meetings

 

The two specialist discussion meetings on Friday 13th February are:

 

‘Meeting the challenges in Upper Atmospheric Science’ Held in The Royal Astronomical Society (starting at 10:30 am) and

 

‘Surveying the transient Universe: From electromagnetic to gravitational waves’ Held in The Geological Society (starting at 10.30 am)

 

Tea and coffee will be available from 10:00 and again after the meeting at 15:30

 

This will be followed by the general meeting:

GROUP ACHIEVEMENT AWARD (A) WINNER

Professor Matt Griffin (Cardiff)

The Herschel-SPIRE Instrument and its Scientific Legacy

 Ms Abigail Calzada-Diaz (Birkbeck)

Constraining source localities of lunar meteorites using remote sensing datasets

 Dr Samaya Nissanke (Radboud University)

Black Hole Births in Real Time

 Dr Allan Chapman (Oxford)
Micrographia on the Moon: Robert Hooke and the Origins of Lunar Geology in 1665

Note there is a fee for attending the meeting if you are not a Fellow of the RAS details on the RAS web site  (£15 and £5 for students) – good value compared to Astrofest !

 


 

You can then rush to the Ewell AS meeting

Black hole births in real time looks very interesting. I wonder which 'real time' she'll be picking.

That's not meant to be funny. The problem of finite element analysis and magnetohydrodynamics may be hard enough but to do it when time and space are distorting is to quote a mathematics - 'Non trivial'!
