I'd go with "Apocalypse Now" and "Full Metal Jacket".
*Maybe* "We Were Soldiers" for the battle scenes... long on the
"maybe". Problem is that we never actually know the characters. It
takes more than good special effects, IMO.
"Platoon" is out, way out, of my nomination because the characters
were flat.
I can't imagine why anyone would list "The Green Berets"... I like the
Duke, but that doesn't make it a good movie.
I'd nominate "Saigon, Year of the Cat" (Judi Dench, Frederic Forrest
[from AN], Chic Murray) It's low budget but quite good... the special
effects are nonexistent and there aren't any battle scenes.
Oh, let's see... I'd also nominate "Go Tell the Spartans" even though
it's quite flawed.
So there's my five.
Hey! What's the best book?

I'm going to see 84 C MoPic; I've heard others say it's good.
Methinks you're nuts on some of the others; "Air America" in
particular. I'd rate it right beside "The Boys in Company C" and
"Purple Hearts" in silliness.

After returning from Vietnam I watched a Vietnam war movie with a fellow
paratrooper at Fort Bragg at an outdoor theater. This would have been in 1967
or 1968. It was so silly that we couldn't stop laughing. We got irrated looks
from a sergeant who was with his wife in the car next to us. After several
quarts of beer and hundreds of belly laughs we decided to take off. We forgot
to hang up the speaker; it wound up in Gary's lap as he drove off. I have no
idea what the name of the movie was but it had to have been one of the first
ones.
I'm sorry !Jones but that just popped in my mind.

At that point in time, it would almost *had* to have been "The Green
Beanies" with John Wayne; that's about the only one that was out.

Even drunk I would have recognized the Duke. Most likely it was "To The Shores
Of Hell" or "A Yank In Viet-Nam," both of which were released before 1967.
I saw the movie with B-28, an SF B Team, in Cao Lanth City, in the
Mekong Delta. It was hard not to laugh, but everyone kept a straight
face. Some trivia is that the South Vietnamese commander was played
by a Chinese-American (Jack Soo?) The Vietnamese were traditional
enemies of the Chinese, so I knew that did not go over very well.
After a year in Korea, then Vietnam, and some time in Japan, I could
figure out the countenances, and knew the Vietnamese could also, but
the province chief was very cordial. Earlier I had been on the Test
and Evaluation Team for the 11th Air Assault Division (which went to
Vietnam as the 1st Cavalry) at Fort Benning when they filmed some
scenes, in an office, and used actual army officers - some I knew . I
was surprised to see them in the film. The mass flyover of Huey's was
also in the film, and I was there for that and wondered why was anyone
filming such an impossible scene. The war was not well understood
until after the 1st Cav had their baptism of fire in the valley (Au
Shau?) When I was on the T&E I hinted that air-mobile operations
could not work the way they envisioned and I was told to not hint
that. So when I got to Saigon, and airmobile qualified I could have
gone to the Cav, but chose a newly forming MACV team which was
supposed to replace an SF team, but Tet happened, they did not ship
out, and I wound up as the ops officer for the SF - and that is how I
got to see the film. More than anyone wanted to know.

I'n surprised that it was in Vietnam that early. The web site says it
was released on the 4th of July, '68; however, I definitely saw it at
Ft. Eustis and I shipped outta there right about then. Tet, '68 would
have predated it, though.
Of course, the Beanies always had the best of everything. They had
"Barbraella" long before we legs got to see them.
Jones
I think that they sent it to Vietnam as soon as possible (maybe as
some sort of morale-booster, although it didn't.) I wrote my wife
about seeing it, and weeks later I got a letter saying that it was
just out. I wrote her to not see it. I'm sure that they meant well.

Well, Jane did have nice tits, all politics aside.
I did meet a GI that wouldn't have gone for Jane in bed. But he
was put out because he was gay. I wonder if he had spent the
night with Jane if he would have been gay afterwards.

My bit with Jane Fonda is that I can spend my life frothing at the
mouth over her or I can just accept what we got as a (sort of) apology
and go on.
OMG, I'm, like, *so* over it; it's like... you know...
Now you know what !Jones thinks..
