Hello!

I am (still) using Forte (Free) Agent 1.93, and have no need to
upgrade to a newer version of the program.

I need sometimes to use the crosspost check funktion that is under the
"purchased version" of Agent in this version package.

Is it still possible to registrate the old version? I somewhere read
that Forte inc does not support the old version any more, so because
of that I thought it is not possible to registrate the old version
anymore. But how is it, in fact?

Yes, it's still possible. While we don't technically support these
older versions, if you purchase an Agent license for 4.2 (with free
upgrade to 5.0 when it is released), you can use that key to unlock
any prior version of Agent too. So, if you buy a new key, you can
enter the key into Free Agent 1.93 and the new key will register it to
gain access to the features Free Agent doesn't have. I hope that
answers your questions. Please let me know if there is still any
confusion.

Why don't you make a backup of your existing copy (the complete Agent
folder) and place that back on your hdd after the reinstall? Should work
fine...

Dealing with Agent, that's like asking "with a power black out, can I still
play my violin using batteries?" Sort of :-)

No. All you need is the Agent directory tree. Just zip it up copy to a
CD or wherever, then copy back after re-installing WinXP.

John,

Others have explained that you can copy your Agent 1.93 to CD/DVD and
copy to your new XP Pro installation. You can also download Agent 1.93
in various languages at

If you do that, after copying the CD to the new machine, be sure to
mark all files as no "Read Only" - files copied from CD are usually
marked "Read Only", because you can't write to them on the CD, but
Agent needs write access to its files.

Just be careful with CD copies. Depending on how you retrieve the
files they may all be marked as read only and Agent will not work
until relevant files are made read write.

Good point. After restoring the directory tree go to a console window,
then go to the Agent directory and type

attrib /s -r *.*

and that will correct the problem. Better yet, as others have pointed
out, just use a USB thumb drive to move the files.
