1) I think the line about "the bad news is, Live from New York, it's
Saturday Night" was definitely meant to be ironic and was one of the
funniest, saddest lines in the show. I think, underneath the
exhaustion and senioritis, the SNL people really do care about what
they're doing and hate the fact that they suck. The show deserves
a lot more support than some cynical hack job that manages to work
because it takes no risks.
2) I think the Stinkville thing had something to do with Martin
Lawrence. My impression is that Lorne Michaels dissed him somewhat
to protect SNL from NBC but bore no particular animosity toward
the guy. One thing I noticed is that Michaels' other show, Conan,
reran an episode in which Lawrence appeared a couple of weeks ago,
AFTER the NBC ban on new appearances by Lawrence took effect.
