I'm not sure, but I think that was a guy named Loudon Wainwright. Was in
about 4-5 episodes.

Kind of like the guitar player from "There's Something About Mary" wouldn't
you say?

In one episode it was mentioned he was a dentist, but that's all I remember
about the guy.

Loudon Wainwright III, a folk singer who was used in 3 episodes in
season 3 playing Captain Spalding.

Captain Spaulding (another salute to Groucho) was payed by Louden
Wainright III, folk/rock singer/songwriter. Husband of Kate McGarrigle
and father to Rufus Wainright.

I'm sure there's a ton of info on ths musical family on the web.

he featured so proinently? Was he a Gelbart or Averback pal?

No doubt!

Was Charles Emerson Winchester the third a tribute to Loudon Wainwright the
third?

No, he was surgeon. In one episode when they're operating, Blake says
something like "Take over here, Spalding".

I also read somewhere that Loudon Wainwright III also sang Suicide is Painless
for the movie. I can't be sure if that's true though.

Loudon Wainright played Captain Calvin Spaulding in three episodes, "Big
Mac", "There Is Nothing Like A Nurse", and "Rainbow Bridge". I don't think
he was a dentist - he appeared to be performing regular surgery in his OR
scene in "There Is Nothing Like A Nurse".

At Eduard Hereide's site there are a few links to LW3-sites.
His URL is http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Land/8407.
I haven't checked if the links on it are any good, but he does rate
the sites.

I'm pretty sure he didn't. But his character and songs are reminscent of the
guitar picking in the movie - and of course more late 60s-early 70s than
early 50s.

The film titles and soundtrack album don't credit a singer. The album
credits the song to *The MASH*, which does seem to suggest that it was an
unknown session singer. It's anybody's guess who that was though. My
money's on it *not* being Loudon.

BTW, Loudon was guest starring on a few comedy/music shows in the UK in the
mid 1980s when that MASH season was being rerun. On one show, a clip was
shown and he was asked how he came to appear on MASH and he said, rather
abruptly. "they asked me to do it, and I did it." His tone suggested that
he didn't want to talk about the experience for some reason.
