I have a question that I should have asked when Elsig was with us. I could
kick myself. Oh well, here is is:

I recently saw the Episode 181 - Dear Uncle Abdul. Season 8. In this episode
Hawkeye and BJ irritate the camp with their telling of a joke. Hawkeye, asks
the question. “Feh, to lilt! Does Red Skeleton have lilt? Does Jackie
Gleason have lilt?”
How does Hawkeye know about them. Granted Red Skeleton was on radio, but he
meant on their TV shows.

How did Hawk even know about TV, as the TV freeze was on, and there was
obviously no TV in Korea at that time? I guess they could have seen kinnies,
but they were new at the time as well.

Also in another episode Dr. Freed makes a reference to “I love Lucy”, again,
how would he know of it, in Korea?

LG would not have answered this as this ep was way after he left the show.
As for some of the TV references, there were many, including references from
Radar, Potter, CEW...
TV was around during the time of the KW.
However, not everything seen on MASH was correct in the timeline.

Potter's remarks about his wife's saying about the little ghosts
besides the people on tv.
(ghost images from reflected over-the-air tv signals)

and having the Dumont fixed.. ( Dumont was a TV brand and a network back
then)

BJ and The Syncopated Clock music reference to the lateshow movie.

all very time correct.

Yes, those references were, but many others (not having to do with TV) were
not. Hoola-hoops, "Mockingbird," (song) and more than I have time to mention
here.

True too,
like Radar's penpal's letter with reference to
Gogi Grants, The Wayward wind , there were other versions, but her's was
released in 1956.

and the Bell 47J model enclosed helicopter in one episode, that was not
produced until around 1955

and the 60s era French turbine powered helicopter used in "Henry Please
Come Home"

Vintage helicopters may be hard to come by. But a word in a script can
easily be changed.

true , but just for the "Halibut" did some tracing.

one of the helicopters used in the series ( you can ID it easy.
it has the large plexiglas patch on the bubble , passenger side .)
in one episode you can read the FAA N-number before they painted it over.
found that it had been written off in an accident just after the series
ended. then it appeared again, rebuilt in Central America.
havent been able to determine if its still flying.

also found some photos in the LIFE magazine archives of helicopters
that actually flew medivac missions in Korea during the Korean war.
was able to rread the serials and was able to trace several . they have
been rebuilt and upgraded and are flying operations in the gulf servicing
oil platforms.. although one was written off in a training accident.. ;-(

Just a hobby..

And in the same letter a reference to Bo Diddley who I think was pretty
unknown in the early 50s.
