The most evil person would be the person at the network who
decided to cancel Dark Shadows.
Maybe the person that decided to change the direction of the show from
what made it very popular, supernatural, back to soap opera love
story.
Cancellation was a fore gone conclusion based on the ratings and the
ratings was a result of the show's new direction which the core
audience didnt like
The ratings started going down with the Leviathan storyline.
That storyline was a departure from what they had been doing. Barnabas
not as a vampire was not what the audience wanted to see.
They had no choice. Jonathan Frid was weary of the role, and only agree
to renew his contract if he could some character besides Barnabas.
Bingo...the departure of writer Ron Sproat during the middle of the 1897
storyline didn't help things either. The series went into a creative
tailspin in late 1969 and never fully recovered.
Our local ABC affiliate dropped the series in September of 1970, though
they brought it back in November of that year...but on a once a week, 5
episode marathon basis, aired late every Friday night until cancellation
by ABC.
Wasnt the Leviathan storyline after their highest ratings with a
werewolf and vampire? Why not continue with a new vampire and maybe
even a different werewolf? That was a storyline that clearly worked.
The Leviathan thing was stupid

Our ABC affiliate started showing it earlier in the afternoon (or maybe ABC
shifted the time) in the fall of 1970 while I was still in school and
couldn't be home to watch it and then dropped the series altogether by the
end of the year.

Dark Shadows kept recycling stories in its last year and a half or so,
trying new twists on stories that had worked before. The werewolf was
dropped, but stories featuring Barnabas as a vampire again continued
throughout 1970, after the Leviathan storyline had concluded.
The 1840 storyline, according to one of the Dark Shadows books that have
been released, was a deliberate attempt to revitalize the show by
recycling ideas that had worked in the past...a main character accused
of witchcraft...Barnabas vs. Angelique...Reverend Trask...even a
character who had been haunting present-day Collinwood, leading to the
1840 flashback. Problem was, it had all been done before, and had been
done better the first time.
Personally, I wish Dan Curtis had released both Gordon Russell and Sam
Hall from the daily writing chores. By this time, I think that both men
had simply run out of ideas. Jonathan Frid, of course, probably didn't
help things any by refusing to sign a new contract with the show unless
he could play some other character besides Barnabas...but the series was
on its way out by this time anyway.
Ironically, according to the Dark Shadows Almanac, ratings for Dark
Shadows actually rose during its final few weeks on the air.

It was your local affiliate. Dark Shadows moved to 4pm in the summer of
1968, and remained there until the series was dropped.
Here, during the final few months that the series was on the air, we
were treated to a five episode marathon each Friday night, following the
11pm local news.
Would have probably made a great Saturday morning marathon.
Our idiot affiliate showed DS at like 1:30 during the school year and
moved it to about 4:30 when school was out, to make sure students didn't
watch it, ever. Whenever somebody was home sick from school, the first
thing people asked when they got back was 'what happened on Dark
Shadows?'

Bad Reboot's 'Crap Trek' 2009: "No Shat, No Show"

What, do they do this every weekend?

What the heck is Chiller? Is that the old Monster Channel on
Dishnetwork satellite TV?
No idea. It's a 'horror' movie channel we get on COX.

I just saw the new Star Trek movie........best Trek
film ever made.
Even better than Khan and the Voyage Home.
And the best thing about it......no big giant head,
enourmous ego, and overacting by Shatner.
Chiller is another one of the cable channels we don't get on
our cable system.
If it's like Sci Fi we'll get the Channel just after they
end the run of Dark Shadows.

Does anyone out there know if it is carried by Comcast?
Now Joe, Phyllis always speaks very highly of you.
LOL.

It's too bad they don't play the original.

It's now time for healing, and for fixing the damage the Democrats did
to America.
You can also watch the whole revival for free on Hulu

Why would I watch the revival? It was terrible!

It is simply breathtaking to watch the glee and abandon with which
the liberal media and the Angry Left have been attempting to turn
our military victory in Iraq into a second Vietnam quagmire. Too bad
for them, it's failing.

Two words: Joanna Going.
