Seacrest walks down the center stairs, past each contestant. He points at
them and says their first names. They're dressed in 40's costumes. Harry
Connick Jr. says "This ... is American Idol!"

Is that the first time a guest has ever said that to open the show? Is it
the first time anyone other than Seacrest, Dunkleman, or Simon said it?

PRELIMINARIES

SITJ. Randy goes whoo for himself and boos Simon.

Now the contestants come out. The full band is on the stage.

Harry Connick Jr. is here because he's this week's mentor. There's tape of
him. He takes classic songs and makes them his own.

The theme is the songs of Frank Sinatra. Harry says the contestants can
interpret Sinatra's songs another way. There's tape of Frank Sinatra.
There just happens to be a Sintra-themed musical playing.

The contestants go in to meet Harry. He wrote arrangements for the
contestants. So they can interpret the songs their own way.

Now Harry finally comes down onto the stage. His band members are on the
stage. Most of their names begin with the letter J. Harry will be playing
piano for every song. He said the contestants had big ears, meaning they
wanted to listen to his advice. Harry says songs have melody and lyrics.
The contestants need to sing both of them.

[break]

SITJ = Seacrest introduces the judges.

[return]

Frank Sinatra's daughters, Nancy and Tina, are ITA. Stand up. One of them
is just back from having some botched plastic surgery. They give Simon a
monogrammed hankie.

PERFORMANCES

Aaron Kelly - "Fly Me To the Moon"

Harry advised him to turn off a long note before the harmony clashes with
it. Aaron had a good week last week, but he's back to his high school
talent show routine tonight. His voice lacks depth. That's even more
evident on the high notes. Randy is excited. He said he was worried about
Aaron, but he did a good job. Ellen said she was also worried, but it was
beautiful. Kara said it was good, but last week was better. She says Aaron
will be here again. He needs more charisma, to fill the stage more. Kara
just keeps yammering on. Simon treasures the hankie. He said Aaron was a
mouse to Sinatra's lion. He's a mouse who tries hard. Each contestant has
two phone numbers tonight. You don't have to call both bla bla bla.

[break]

Nancy Sinatra was the one who got her face ruined by surgery. Tina looked
like a normal person.

[return]

Casey James - "Blue Skies"

Seacrest chats with Casey. He passed up an offer to play a gig with a
non-TV-watching friend that would have paid $50 and a free meal. That's a
good story. In rehearsal, Harry is having a hard time getting Casey
started. Casey's first notes were off pitch. I don't think Casey looks
good with his hair in a bun. The tempo is too slow. This is weird and bad.
The vibrato sounds bad. The song should have been a lot quicker. If Harry
arranged this, he laid a bomb for Casey. Randy said it was Casey's worst
performance. It was pitchy and he was out of his element. It didn't work,
baby. Ellen said it felt very stiff. She keeps picking on the piano player
(is she joking or not?). Kara said to work on the lamb vibrato. Simon said
Casey seemed embarrassed and uncomfortable. Simon made a joke about Casey
having a booking for next week. Harry said Casey sang it better in
rehearsal. The problem is that it's hard to hear up on the stage. These
are 866 numbers, not 800 numbers.

[break]

Hey Dove, just because soap sticks to mirrors doesn't mean it sticks to
skin. Skin isn't mirrors.

[return]

Anthony Hopkins is ITA. Seacrest shows off the new Coke glasses.

Crystal Bowersox = "Summer Wind"
Harry said he could tell Crystal was singing about something. She says she
has a personal connection to the lyrics. Harry is interested in figuring
out what the connection is. Crystal got her hair done, but it still looks
messy from the sides and back. She sounds great. Her pitch and delivery
were perfect. Randy said it was subdued, OK, a little sleepy. Crystal
started to talk back, then she shut herself up and said "It's OK, It's
OK". Ellen liked it. Kara said it was out of Crystal's element, but she
liked it. Crystal talks back, it's not out of her element. SHUT UP GIRL,
she's paying you a compliment. Simon said the first half was too jazzy,
too nightclub. It was OK. If you survive, it's about being in it to win
it, not just to please yourself. Seacrest asks Crystal about starting
slow. She said the song should start softly and sweetly. Simon said it
shouldn't be about the song having personal meaning, it should be about
presenting yourself well.

[break]

Those were some very interesting critiques. I do wish Crystal would stop
being so defensive and talk-backy. It makes her sound difficult, not to
mention a little insecure.

GFTC.

The angry chef returns June 1!

[return]

Michael Lynche - "The Way You Look Tonight"

Harry says you don't have to mess with the melody. I want Michael to be
eliminated so badly. I can't stand to watch him, but I also can't stand to
close my eyes and focus on his voice. OK, I have to say it - he's a
cornball. Oh yeah, he had to throw a ten-finger wave in to cap things off.
Randy said Michael is in it to win it. This is what this competition is
about! Ellen said Michael is more comfortable and smooth on stage than the
others. Kara said Michael took us on a journey and didn't lose himself in
the song, and that's what this is all about. Simon said the first three
performances were OK, but with Michael, it all just clicked. It was
fantastic. Seacrest imitates Michael's stupid wave and asks him to do it
again.

[break]

Again, those were some very interesting critiques. As bad as Casey's
performance was, it didn't make me want to stab my eyes and ears like
Michael's did.

GFTC = Gotta feed the cats.

Tonight, on "Glee", the mean cheerleading coach will be mean.

[return]

Lee Dewyze - "That's Life"

Harry advises Lee to focus on the words "pauper" and "puppet". Wow, Lee
sounds really good tonight. I've been getting bored with him lately, but
dude is on his game tonight. He doesn't sound as rough as usual, and he
isn't making the bad faces. His pacing was great. Randy loved it. Ellen
picks on Harry again. She said if this was the last performance show, Lee
would have just won the whole thing. Kara asked Lee, "do you think you can
win?" He says he does. Kara said he needs to believe it, because he can
win. Simon said Harry was incredible tonight. He brought out Lee's
personality and confidence. Simon said Lee gave it 110 percent, and it was
by far the best performance of the night. Lee goes over to slap skin with
Harry.

WRAPUP

We see taped recaps of tonight's performances. You can vote as many times
as you want. Lady Gaga will be on the show tomorrow.

My ranking of tonight's performances, from most favorite to least:

Lee Dewyze - "That's Life"

Crystal Bowersox = "Summer Wind"

Aaron Kelly - "Fly Me To the Moon"
Casey James - "Blue Skies"

Michael Lynche - "The Way You Look Tonight"

There was a very clear order for me tonight. Crystal was great; Lee was
terrific. Aaron was below average, Casey was poor, and Michael was
insufferable.

Prediction: Michael will be eliminated.

1. Lee
2. Michael
3. Crystal
4. Aaron
5. Casey

End of the road, Casey...... voice was terrible, presentation was
horrible, the classic "fish out of water" syndrome. He has been
getting worse by the week and now it's time to go.

Casey's worst performance yet. He pushed too hard and it showed.

| Crystal Bowersox - "Summer Wind"

Her enunciation wasn't good in the beginning, but it got better. Still not up
to her usual standards.

| Michael Lynche - "The Way You Look Tonight"

Cheese+! Mainly on pitch, but there was nothing else good about it. He sounded
like a sappy little girl singing.

| Lee Dewyze - "That's Life"

Not great, but easily the best performance of the night. Lee was the only one
who showed any personality at all.

| WRAPUP

On average, tonight wasn't very good. Maybe a C- overall since I'm feeling
charitable. It's bad to think we've heard the Top 5 now and still haven't heard
anybody experience a "moment." I'm now thinking it won't happen this season.
They really just aren't that good.

3- Aaron Kelly
4- Casey James
5- Michael Lynche

Finals Week 8 Performances, broadcast on 5/4/2010

PRELIMINARIES

Hmmm. Another one of my favorite nights. (Totally underwhelmed). No
offense but while I can appreciate Frank Sinatra's music, I don't
particularly like it. And before any Jersey people get on my butt, I
don't like Bruce Springsteen either and I AM from New Jersey. Let's
pray they don't do a Springsteen night. However, since I haven't
liked a category of music they've chosen the last few weeks, I guess
I'll just have to grin and bear it and be as partial as I can with
what the contestants present.

PERFORMANCES

Aaron Kelly - "Fly Me To the Moon"

Root canal work was more pleasant. I really thought that Aaron would
knock Sinatra out of the park. I was thoroughly disappointed. His
vocal was weak and lacking any form of charisma. He could/should be
in a boatload of trouble but...........

Casey James - "Blue Skies"

Casey saved Aaron's ass. If Aaron was like getting a root canal,
Casey was like getting wisdom teeth pulled with no anesthesia. He
sounded like some kind of uncomfortable goat that was getting ready to
go to the knackers yard. He looked even more uncomfortable that he
sounded. I don't know if Simon was kidding or not but after that
performance, $50 and free food might be in his near future. I'm sorry
for the harsh words but in my opinion (and that's all it is) is was a
"complete and total mess".

Crystal Bowersox - "Summer Wind"

OK Crystal fans (and I'm one of them), her last couple of weeks have
been less than stellar. The song started off a little shaky but as
she started to get into it, she started sounding much better but then
it tapered off again at the end. Crystal needs to start bringing her
"A" game EVERY week because at this point, Lee is right on her butt.
A couple of weeks ago, she was far and away the favorite to win this
thing. Now, I'm not so sure.

Michael Lynche - "The Way You Look Tonight"

Hmmmm. I really didn't hear what the judges were raving about. It
sounded like he always sounds. Nothing different. That being said,
he WAS MUCH better than the first 2 contestants.

Lee Dewyze - "That's Life"

By far the best performance of the evening. No one even came close to
Lee. He looked great on the stage! He's getting much more
comfortable with himself and is starting to gain confidence as the
competition progresses. I agree with Kara in that he really needs to
start believing that he CAN win this whole thing......especially if
Crystal continues to struggle. Lee was my favorite of the evening.

WRAPUP

MY Rankings:
1. Lee
2. Crystal
3. Michael
4. Aaron
5. Casey

Who's going home??? I really don't care as long as it's not Crystal.
Even though she's struggled that last 2 weeks, I believe that she's
the best vocalist in this competition.
Who do I think America will send home...................probably
Casey. He was downright awful last night and he's just not getting
the votes anymore.

I didn't like the performance, but I did think the tone of his voice was
better than usual. I just like him better when he's not focusing on
playing the guitar.

Having said that, the "lamb" comment was accurate and is going to hurt
him badly. The guys in the editing room must have been laughing their
asses off as they spliced a huge bleat from Casey into the recap clip.

excesses.

Kara is spot on in her comment. The problem with Aaron is he doesn't have
*any* charisma. He doesn't fill the stage. Simon's comment was spot on
too: if Sinatra was a lion, Aaron is a mouse.

Aaron actual performance wasn't really that bad, it just didn't have any spark.

> Casey James - "Blue Skies"

Yup, the worst performance of the night. Too bad he couldn't replicate his
rehearsal performance that both Harry and MJ's Big Blog rehearsal informant
both said that he killed. But the crowd still gave him some of the largest
cheers, so he might, just might, make it to the Top 4, not based on his
performance tonight, but just on his popularity.

> Crystal Bowersox = "Summer Wind"

Eeeeck. The judges were a bit kind to her. She started off badly, and she
never really kicked it into gear. Her worst performance of the season.

> Michael Lynche - "The Way You Look Tonight"

This was tonight's second best performance, but that's not really saying
that much. Still it was good, but far from having any star quality to it.

> Lee Dewyze - "That's Life"

Best performance of the night. The first performance of Lee that I really
enjoyed this season. This time, I think the praise from the judges was
warranted. The only contestant tonight who truly took the song, owned it,
and delivered a very enjoyable performance. Good for him!

> WRAPUP

My rankings of the performances.

1. Lee -- by far the best of the night.
2. Michael -- good, but no star quality to it.
3. Aaron -- fair, workmanlike, but no spark whatsoever. He lacks charisma.
4. Crystal -- mediocre, her worst performance of the season.
5. Casey -- not good, stiff and awkward; his worst performance of the season.

Who should go home: any of the bottom three (Aaron, Crystal, or Casey).
Who will go home: Michael.

That's for sure! And nobody even put their own spin on a Sinatra song
that was anywhere close to exciting.

I know every time I post a video of last year's X-Factor winner Joe
McElderry a bunch of people diss him. But here I go again anyway.
When it was down to the top 10, they had a big band night and Joe sang
the Rat Pack's "Sway." Regardless of whether anyone likes his singing
or not, there was no one in AI's top 10 this season who could come
anywhere close to giving a performance like this on one of these
songs:

This is a beautiful Irving Berlin song and Casey proved just how
difficult it is to sing it passably well. He failed miserably.

I liked it and her. Very inventive way of handling the dreads while
wearing an evening gown. The tat on the back is not my thing. Crystal
proved she can actually sing, not just do the
guitar-case-open-for-donations-on-the-street- thing.

Ugh. Fish out of water.

Taking less well known Sinatra songs would have probably been a good
idea across the board. Of course most of the audience probably doesn't
know who Sinatra was or has the template of the song competing in their
heads. (If not Sinatra singing Blue Skies, there's Bing Crosby or Al
Jolson who sang it in The Jazz Singer in 1927.)

Which brings me to the same critique we hear several times a season when
any of these competitors tries to sing Whitney, Mariah, Alicia, fill in
the blank with other famous singer. "You're no Whitney. You will
always be compared to them and you just don't have the voice."

Why set these Lilliputians up by having them sing Sinatra?
There's something bizarre, perverse and inherently comedic about it.
(Next week on a very special Glee! the kids perform La Traviata)

Unremarkable. I think he's heading home this week.

Totally horrible. He missed most of the notes, and the machine-gun
vibrato is pretty terrible.

She did Summer Wind, and did it well. Since I think she should win, I
cringe every time she starts to go back at the judges because that
traditionally turns voters off.

Pretty good, but in general I'm not a fan of the way he sings. His
voice stays in the upper registers too much for my liking.

I liked this, although it veered off into "Nickleback does Sinatra" a
little too often. He still looks like he would rather be anywhere
else than on that stage.

Aaron goes home, Casey a close second behind him.

Hey everyone, Greg is piggybacking on me! Avert your eyes!

Aaron does have a great voice most of the time, I just don't see a lot
of star power there. Maybe in 5 years? I have been partial to Casey
only because of his guitar playing (which is really great) but his
voice definitely struggles a lot. Crystal has been my favorite from
day one, and the only one who I could see making an album that I would
buy.

I enjoyed Connick too as mentor. He has a great sense of humor and I
kind of liked the back and forth between him and Ellen last night too.

ITA. Casey was horrible last night, worse than Aaron, who was also
pretty bad. I'm glad someone (Kara) finally mentioned that goat vibrato
that he can't seem to control.

Best of the night, and Lee looked more relaxed than I've ever seen
him.

Harry Connick, Jr. was a wonderful mentor, and I'm confused why the
contestants didn't perform better than they did. On the other hand, I
felt like his band was overwhelming and distracting.

Best to worst:

1. Lee
2. Crystal

3. Casey
4. Aaron
5. Mike (okay, these last three are just because I don't like Mike and
Aaron and I do like Casey)

Bottom 2: Casey and Mike
Going home: Mike

I'm worried that Aaron is NEVER GOING HOME.

I can't believe they ended up with this group after auditioning how many
thousand people? I wasn't at all inspired to vote, as none of the
contestants, with perhaps the exception of Michael, have any stage
presence or charisma. And they don't really sing that well. Yes, they
sing better than I, but are they really the best the country has to
offer? Remembering the contestants from other seasons, there have to be
better singers out there.

After all these rounds, none of them really works the audience or more
importantly, the cameras. Their singing is nothing special. They don't
seem to be able to sincerely connect with songs, and I just can't see any
of them standing out from the crowd on a CD. Usually, I start to get
interested in the contest, and who will win around the top five, but not
this season.

Can you tell I'm disappointed?

Does X-Factor have the same stupid voting rules which allow a few power
voters to determine the outcome? Or do they limit the votes from each
medium (phone, computer, text) like DWTS? I don't care much for the show,
but I do like their limited votes and time frame for them, and also that the
judges actually have a reason to exist other than to make remarks (not that
I always agree with them, esp. Randy lately).

He was given the "arrangement of death" -
something nice and lingering so that he'd have to
actually sustain long notes and show off every
vocal weakness he's got. Thanks Harry. I also
think that Casey is not Casey (in his own mind)
without his guitar - take away his guitar, take
away his mojo.

I liked this too and didn't have the same problem
the judges did. I "get" sensitive folk singer
stuff, and I also get Simon's point, but that's
not Crystal, she's not going to play by those rules.

I liked this one pretty well, but I still think
that Lee's appeal in unique to this season -
lowered expectations and all that. Transplant him
into another season against stiffer competition
and he probably would have been gone long ago.

I agree about the band/arrangements, but except
for Casey, I think everyone else *did* perform
about as well as they always do - Lee performed
100x better.

No way is Mike going home tonight <urpgakexcuseme>
The judges *luuurrrve* him and have managed to
see him to us (and by us I mean all of those other
people.)

Casey's going tonight. And I will be sad. He's
really grown on me. (Can't stop listening to his
studio version of Jealous Guy.)

> I'm worried that Aaron is NEVER GOING HOME.

I think that would actually make TPTB quite happy.
They finally got there moldable country male
singer (just overlook the fact that he's not
really all that good - but I do agree with people
who say he's got potential and can improve with time.)

That's why I prefer Casey over everyone else. Not that Casey has the best
voice -- he doesn't, though he usually sings in tune (unlike last night),
but that Casey is the one who I would mostly purchase a CD of.

I'm not too much into folk or Lilith Fair music that Crystal would produce,
nor R&B sappy music that Michael would produce or the teenybopper or young
Country music that Aaron would produce. I could, though, see myself
purchasing a Lee album too, but overall, I prefer the style of music that
Casey likes to perform over anyone's else style in the Top 5.

Because they mostly suck. Oops, was that a rhetorical question? ;-)

HC was a great mentor, especially when he explained things like how
Aaron holding that note too long would clash with the piano's part.
Not that Aaron understood a word of that, but at least it was helpful
information.

The two best bits of mentoring advice have come from HC and Adam
Lambert.

Harry: Don't sing notes that clash with the band.
Adam: If you want to win, WAKE UP!

Not necessarily. Airfare deals can be had for many of those cities,
but it's still more expensive than driving to an audition city. And,
as I mentioned, the audition process is apparently several days long,
so there's the accommodation issue to consider and someone might have
to take time off from work to participate. Some auditioners have
mentioned having to quit their jobs. We've seen auditioners who are
all alone, either because of the time or the cost problem.

There are a large number of mid-sized cities for which the closest
audition city was still several hours away by car.

Why not try some other cities and see who's out there?

No, she is really not the AI type. And I think
that's where a lot of her perceived "back talk"
comes from. She doesn't get the judges and she
thinks they don't get her, and so she tries to
explain and defend herself. But it never comes

It was the perfect storm of death for Casey. The theme was not his cuppa. He
might be used to playing with a band, but this was not what he had in mind.
He had NO guitar. Then....it was the kiss of death. He did the Ace Young
hair pulled back way too tight and in a manbun. (Ha...I just made that up!)

<snork!> "Manbun"! I like that. Yeah, why is a
pony tail OK, but I sort of flinched when he
turned to the side and I saw that his hair was in
a bun? Really it presents a sleeker picture than
just a pony tail and for this song and his outfit
it was a good choice. I guess.

No, men do too. Didn't your husband plump up after he married you and you
had kids?

I know...I sort of cracked myself up with that one too! I was never a huge
Ace Young fan, but I distinctly remember that he had the suit and slicked
back hair/manbun the week he got the axe as well. (Casey almost got the
axe.) You just don't hide one of your best assets. Also, his head is just
about completely round!

Despite his very bad performance, Casey didn't almost get axed this week.
Mike almost got axed. Casey wasn't the other one in the bottom two.
