FBI scours ex-home of La Mesan who killed girl, self
Agents look into whether man linked to other cases

LA MESA – FBI agents are looking into whether a La Mesa man who shot
and killed a 13-year-old Arkansas girl he had met on the Internet had
any trysts with other children.

David L. Fuller, 47, killed himself Wednesday night in a storage unit
in Conway, Ark., as sheriff's deputies closed in on him. Inside, SWAT
officers found the bodies of Fuller and Kacie Rene Woody in his van.

The deaths were being investigated as a murder-suicide; both had
suffered gunshot wounds. Police Maj. Mark Elsinger said police suspect
Fuller sexually assaulted the girl.

Fuller had struck up an Internet relationship with the Kacie about a
month ago, said Deputy Jack Pike, a spokeswoman for the Faulkner
County Sheriff's Department.

He said investigators were trying to figure out Fuller's movements
before he showed up Tuesday at Kacie's home in Holland, about 30 miles
north of Little Rock. Pike said Fuller likely abducted the girl.

In La Mesa yesterday, FBI agents and La Mesa police searched an
apartment on Rosebud Lane where Fuller had lived for about three
months.

FBI Agent Erika Foxworth declined to comment about what detectives had
found during the search, but said it is part of a continuing
investigation of Fuller's background, and to see if he had victimized
other children. The FBI is looking at similar crimes across the nation
to see if any unsolved cases might be linked to him.

She asked anyone who knew Fuller, or about any relationships that he
might have had with children, to call the FBI at (858) 565-1255.

Joe Lee, 47, a neighbor of Fuller's, said he was stunned.

"He seemed like a typical guy, who had been in a long-term
relationship and was going through a divorce," Lee said.

Lee said he had often chatted with Fuller and met his two children, an
11-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl, when they visited.

When Fuller took trips out of town, Lee said Fuller would usually ask
him to pick up his mail. "I spoke to him on Sunday before he left,"
Lee said. "He said he was going to Albuquerque, New Mexico."

Fuller separated from his wife, Sally K. Fuller, a few months ago, and
she filed for divorce July 17, court files show. The children lived
mostly with her at a house the couple had owned on Pearson Street in
La Mesa.

In her divorce petition, Sally Fuller sought full custody of the
children, "reasonable" visitation with the children for the father,
$700 a month in spousal support, and child support. However, the
couple failed to appear at a scheduled mediation session Aug. 27.

They sold their house about two months ago, neighbors said.

Lee said Fuller seemed to have a normal relationship with his
children; he planned things to do with them before they visited and
seemed happy to be with them.

"He'd tell me all the things he wanted to do with his kids," Lee said.
"Like he got tickets to the new Harry Potter movie."

Fuller's father, Edward Fuller of Salt Lake City, said it was
ridiculous to believe that his son would commit such a crime.

"He would never do anything of the sort," he said.

Kacie's older brother had reported her missing about 10 p.m. Tuesday,
after he hadn't heard from her for four hours. The children's father,
a police officer in a nearby town, was working at the time. Their
mother died five years ago.

Excerpt from KNSD Channel 4 San Diego:

In San Diego Friday, federal agents searched an apartment in the city of La Mesa where
Fuller lived. Agents could be seen removing a computer and several bags of evidence from
the home. An FBI spokeswoman declined to comment on the search, saying only that the
agents were acting on leads from Arkansas authorities.

Authorities believe Woody met Fuller in an Internet chat room and that the man likely
deceived the girl into believing he was a teenager.

A former neighbor said Fuller's wife, Sally, had complained about her husband's computer
use.

"She was saying that her husband spent too much time on the Internet, and not enough time
with the family," said Ila Gamester. The couple had two children.

County records show that Sally Fuller called 911 in January 2002, alleging domestic
violence, according to Liz Purcell, a spokeswoman for the San Diego County district
attorney's office.

The case was not pursued because the claims could not be proven, she said. Sally Fuller
filed for divorce in July and has since left the area.

In September, Fuller was fired from his job as a used car salesman after being caught
visiting pornography sites on company computers, according Bob Chappelle, Fuller's former
employer.

Thanks, Patty!

Due to the SLC link, police here are looking at him as a suspect
(although highly unlikely) in the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping.

That's what made me more interested in the case. Why do you think
it is so unlikely that he may have been involved in Elizabeth Smart's kidnapping?
I know her parents say she didn't use internet much, but if he was visiting
his dad, he could have seen her somewhere in SLC, even at a harp concert. I
wonder if he had any clothes that matched the perp in the Smart kidnapping.

This is on "guts"....but:

If the father is the one in the phone book, he lives about 15 miles
from the Smarts -- in an area where the economics are less than
"middle".

What we call "Salt Lake City" is about 300 square miles and is
actually the entire county -- the "city" itself is a small area, but the
county has a large population and is spread out.

If he was visiting his father, and picked a girl out, it's more likely
he'd pick up one of the Little Lolitas (half-dressed like Britney) in
his father's neighborhood -- not some girl who dresses like it's
the 1960s.

I can't see Elizabeth being able to hide a lot of internet activities
(if any) in the situation the family lived in. It takes a lot of internet
"talk" to get oneself into a situation like this.

The only thing I can see "fitting" is that the father would live just
a bit away from Ricci's trailer park (a couple of miles).
