Bride-to-be slay doesn't add up
They've used a search warrant, repeatedly questioned a city cabbie and scoured
cell phone records, but detectives are still puzzled by the murder of a
Canadian woman found dead in a dump truck Monday.
Stacy-Ann Sappleton, 26, was found shot to death three days after she vanished
on her way to visit her future in-laws at their Hollis, Queens, home.
Police believe she arrived at LaGuardia Airport on May 7 and called her fiancé
about 9:30 a.m. to say she was close to his parents' home. She never arrived,
Damion Blair's family said.
Now the mystery swirling around her death has deepened.
Blair told cops Sappleton had never been to Queens before, but police found
evidence that she had lived in Hollis in the past. Detectives were
investigating a series of short airline trips she took, as well as repeated
phone calls to someone in Detroit, police sources said.
"The idea that she was abducted at 9:30 a.m. on a spring morning in a heavily
populated area is not jibing with detectives," a high-ranking police official
said yesterday.

AIRPORT HACKS QUIZZED IN DUMP SLAY
By LARRY CELONA and CYNTHIA R. FAGEN
May 20, 2004 -- Detectives looking for the killer of a visiting Canadian woman
whose bullet-riddled body was left in a Queens Dumpster have gone back to
square one, canvassing taxi drivers at La Guardia Airport.
Cops have now discounted a cabby's claim that he dropped off the victim,
Stacy-Ann Sappleton, 27, in Brookville, Queens, on May 7, near the home of her
fiancé's parents, whom she was visiting.
The cabby "seemed a bit confused," said a law-enforcement source. "We're
reinterviewing. We're starting from the beginning again."
Cops said Sappleton's trail goes cold after she made a cellphone call to her
fiancé, Damion Blair, getting directions to help the cabdriver find the house
on 226th Street.
Blair was in Canada at the time.
Three days later, Sappleton's body was discovered in a private sanitation
truck, stripped down to her panties and bra, shot in the neck, torso and arms.
There was no sign of sexual assault.
Cops believe her body had been left in a Dumpster for pickup at either an
Oakland Gardens supermarket or at the previous stop, a Key Food at the corner
of Braddock and Hillside Avenues.
Sappleton had been in town to stay with her future in-laws and to plan for the
couple's September wedding.
I am confused too. WTF happened to this chick?
Curious. Not even my wildest speculations, and vivid imagination, can
come up with anything believable in this case.
Are the Blairs trying to cover for something? The younger brother?
Illegal activity?
Your first theory about all the short plane trips, made by Sappleton,
being connected to some drug trade is still tantilizing.
Great case to focus on, Maggie.

I keep going back to this:
"During the ride she conferred by cell phone with
her fiancé, Damion Blair, 28, who was home in
Detroit and providing directions to the house."
So...her fiancee is *sending* her to his parents' home,
but he's not going with her.
How much insurance did he have on her? Why would
he need to provide directions, when an address would
do?
*I* think this was a set-up from the start, with him
home with an alibi and the brothers waiting to do
the deed.
Kris
***Makes sense to me. Stacy and his mom were going to look at the wedding hall
and meet with a photographer. I can imagine that there wouldn't be much for
Damion to do during that trip. And they'd been together 7 years, during which
he'd lived in California and Japan--a weekend apart was nothing to them.
>
>How much insurance did he have on her?
***Well, if he's got *any* insurance on her, I'd consider that suspicious.
Why would
>he need to provide directions, when an address would
>do?
***The cabbie supposedly couldn't find the house so she had to call the fiance
to get directions there.
>
>*I* think this was a set-up from the start, with him
>home with an alibi and the brothers waiting to do
>the deed.
***The only thing I think is suspicious regarding the fiance is that he didn't
head right to NY when Stacy went missing. I just can't believe either he or
his brother would arrange for Stacy to be killed in circumstances that clearly
implicate the brother. What I can believe, though, is that Stacy had another
errand (i.e., a drug connection) that got her killed and that's what kept
Damion away until her body was found.
***Yeah--I'm going back to my first idea about drugs (maybe that's why they
always tell you to stick with your first impulse on those multiple choice
tests). I know howard suggested that the name mix-up (first reports listed her
as "Stacey Stapleton") was just some reporter's transcription error, but I
think Stacy may well have munged her name on the airline manifest to cover up
frequent trips....somewhere. And the lack of sexual assault and gunshot death
make me lean away from anything random or sexual. The underware thing makes me
think it wasn't a hit (why bother?).
The authorities are not giving us much information and I bet it's because they
don't have much. The only worse sign would be if they release a composite
drawing of their "person of interest."
True -- but him not being "interested" enough to go
with her during the wedding planning is what struck
me.
Actually, little about that wedding plan makes sense
to me. Generally, weddings are held in the hometown
of the bride, not the groom, and the bride's family
pays for it all.

Why didn't he just contact the cab company and get a
"plot" of the address?
Maybe because it didn't exist?

Maybe she had to go "earn" the wedding money?
Maybe she was bringing drugs for old people across the border ;)
Kris
***Underwear.

***Yeah--I agree, particularly in light of those stories about how Stacy was
"scared" of NY because of all the crime. And I've never seen any explanation
for why the wedding was being held in NY.

***I think if that was the case we'd know she'd given the cabbie a fake address
by now. I've had to direct many a cab driver to an address--I don't find the
story about her calling the fiance for directions to his house unusual at all.

From Toronto's Pulse 24:
Cut Short
May 11
Toronto native Stacy-Ann Sappleton had high hopes for the future. They
included a new job, and an upcoming wedding in September. But the
future bride's plans were cut tragically short when she was murdered
in New York City.
"She's always was someone that loves to laugh," recalled her aunt Joan
Jackson.
"She loves her siblings," she added. "That much I can tell you. She
was a hard worker, you know, and it shows from her accomplishments….at
the age of 26, where are you going to find someone that owns her own
home, has a good job, you know, that sort of thing."
....and she and her boyfriend had been together for about 7 years?
She owned property and had that good job; I wonder if his name was
on anything?

From the Times-Ledger:
Sappleton's mother, Marcia Thomas, was staying with the family in Brookville. She refused
to comment when reached over the telephone, her voice heavy with fatigue and grief.
The Blair family has lived in the neighborhood for just a year, according to neighbor
David Byfield, who has lived in Brookville for 20 years.
"This neighborhood is really nice," he said. "I'm shocked to hear it. You don't know who
to trust. You feel scared."
April Daniels, who has lived down the block for eight years, said that she now has fears
about walking alone. "It makes me think about when I come out early for work and school,"
the 23 year-old college student said.

Behind the Key Foods in Bayside Monday morning, officers emptied out the remaining
contents of the dumpster and the Ragonese Carting truck and sifted through the trash with
rakes, at one point swabbing a purple bed sheet for evidence.
"There was a lot of blood on her," said Jimmy, dressed in a White Sox cap and a gray
long-sleeved shirt. "She was shot in the side," he said, gesturing to a spot on his torso
below the right-side ribcage.
Although police were still investigating the possibility that the body might have been
placed in the dumpster at the previous pick-up stop in Queens Village before being
discovered, Jimmy said we would have noticed her if she had been in the other dumpster."
"I'm shook up. It's too bad I couldn't find a couple of millions instead," Jimmy said with
a sigh.
This was the year's first murder in the 111th Precinct, which reported two murders in 2003
in the traditionally low crime area covering Bayside, Little Neck, Douglaston and part of
Auburndale.
"It's got to be a lunatic," said Carolyn Debellis, who has lived in Bayside for nine years
and considers it safe. "I sit out on the porch, I have my grandbaby outside. Usually
everybody looks out for everybody."
David Silverberg, who lives in the Windsor Park apartment complex that surrounds the back
lot of Key Foods, said the lot is poorly lit at night, with little surveillance.
"A lot of kids hang out here, the 15- to 20-year-olds," he said. "It doesn't surprise me
that they dumped the body here because it's so dark and quiet."
"It's just unbelievable," he said, shaking his head. "Right in my backyard."
Diane DelPesce, whose apartment in the Windsor Park complex has a window facing the back
of the store with a view of the dumpster, said she had not heard anything unusual
recently.
"You usually hear the dumpsters in the morning. There was no screaming." She waved at her
mother, who was peeking out of the apartment window and looking at the police cars in the
parking lot. "It's not really like this here."

Well she had a cousin in Brooklyn, maybe she had other relatives
in New York. Maybe the New York area was convenient for
everyone, and there is a large Jamaican population there.
Thanks Patty, my money is on the brother.
