I remember back in the 2000's it was said that he was coming out with a CD soundtrack of his cartoon music (such as G1 and ARAH), but never actually happened. Anyone know why?

I can only assume securing the licensing rights somehow got in the way. That was the reason cited as to why the BotCon organizers were never able to do it; they would have to go through too many different channels.

Don't worry, though. This is still going on:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1342576182/grimbots-soundtrack-restoration

I'm working with sound channels ripped from the original Transformers cartoon and the G.I. Joe cartoon and playing mix n' match to build clean, CD-quality tracks. It's very time-consuming for me (I can spend an entire day building a single three-minute piece of music) but I'm dedicated to getting it done. There was a guy who built a number of pieces of music already, but I'm putting together all the ones from Transformers that he missed. We're talking about 194 individual themes at last count (including fanfares and commercial bumper themes and such).

Dare I say this will be better, and more complete, than any official release Rob Walsh might have come up with? It will have all of the Johnny Douglas music, too, which I don't think Walsh would have been able to include.

That must be the reason.
I'm sure the Japanese would have issued a soundtrack in the '80s back in
the days when they issued a soundtrack for EVERYTHING. They had to make
a special "Image Album" of original music for Transformers.

So when does this soundtrack get released? The kickstarter page's pledge started and ended last year, going over the max amount needed.

It's a process.

Here, let me show you something:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/pf3djdp552dotps/g1_music_98_episodes_ALL_TIMECODES.txt

That's my master copy. That was me, watching every G1 episode, taking painstaking notations of which musical themes appeared in which episodes. And that's just the Transformers list, of course; I did another one for G.I. Joe, too.

I joined the project in December but I spent many months just doing work on the front side. I didn't even start actually piecing music together until June or July. Like I said before, it can take an entire day to assemble a raw musical theme. Jim then works his magic, editing out any sound effects I couldn't get rid of, making sure the volume levels are consistent throughout the piece, etc.

The people who funded the Kickstarter project have the right to demand results, because they spent money. Everybody else needs to be patient, because the rest of the fandom is going to get a complete archive of some seriously awesome music for absolutely free and zero effort. Meanwhile, I'm staying up late every night and listening to chunks of the same two-minute piece of cartoon music hundreds of times until I've built a workable track. I'm just sayin'.

Awesome. Wish I'd known about the kickstarter campaign, but my involvement would've been superfluous in the end, I suppose. I'll keep checking ATT for more release info on this.

I also know about doing labors of love, mainly with the G1 VS4 project (also trying to start a Sunbow/Marvel GI Joe VS3 one too). Also, I was thinking of promoting this project of yours on the main page of my site. Should I just link to the Kickstarter page? I'd like to help anyway I can.

Thanks for doing this! :D

Hi, Zob, I just heard about the product. Glad to hear it's going on! Can you post the master copy you have for the G.I. Joe series too? Thanks.

We're only going to be remastering the G.I. Joe music that is shared with the Transformers cartoon. So, music that appears only in G.I. Joe will not be included. However, there are around 60 shared themes between the two shows, so Joe fans will definitely hear some familiar themes.

By the way, the music from Transformers season one is almost ready to be unveiled. We're just finalizing some formatting considerations. I'm sure it will be announced elsewhere, but I'll post something here too as soon as it's ready for public perusal.
