ATLANTA (Reuters) - Nine people have been confirmed dead in a shooting
at an Atlanta office building Thursday, Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell said.
Campbell said the shooter had been identified as Mark Barton, 44, of
Georgia. Police were looking for him at his residence, he said.
He said there did not seem to be any clear reason why Barton, apparently
a day trader at a brokerage firm, started shooting.
"There was apparently no provocation or incident that caused Mr. Barton
to begin shooting," Campbell said. Barton was apparently concerned about
what Campbell called financial losses.
It was the latest in a series of fatal shooting incidents in the United
States that have caused growing concern among the authorities and the
public.

Phuckin Aye! Word on MSNBC is that Barton took some major hits during the past
week of stock market fluctuations, specifically the NASDAQ which he was allegedly
heavy into Internet stock related funds. This apparently put him over the cliff
and into goofyland. Suggest that all be watchin to see if the DOW NASDAQ take another
deep plunge tomorrow!! It just may put some other overstressed 8-cans-of-Coke-a-day
BMW driving brokers who are up over their heads in debt well over the edge.
ATLANTA (AP) - A man in shorts, described as irate over
stock trading losses, opened fire Thursday in two brokerage
offices, killing nine people and wounding 12 before
escaping, then killed himself when stopped by police.
Earlier, three relatives of the suspect were found shot dead
in their suburban home.
Mayor Bill Campbell said the gunman, Mark O. Barton, 44,
committed suicide after police cornered him in a dark green
van at a service station in Atlanta's northern suburbs about
five hours after the office shootings.
``He was pulled over, and then killed himself,'' Campbell
said.
Two weapons were found at the scene and a note was found at
the home where relatives' bodies were found, he said.
The note's contents were not disclosed.
It was the latest in a grim wave of mass shootings at
schools and workplaces and was among the worst office
massacres ever.
Campbell said several witnesses at the office buildings
recognized the gunman as Barton.
Roadblocks went up after the 3 p.m. shootings, and SWAT
teams fanned through the complex of offices searching for
him.
``It's a terrible tragedy for our city,'' Campbell said.
``Our prayers go out to the victims.''
Barton, a chemist, walked into a brokerage office at
Securities Center in the upscale Buckhead section north of
downtown Atlanta about 3 p.m., opened fire, then walked
across the street and began shooting at another brokerage
firm there, the mayor said.
Four of the victims were killed in one building and five in
the other, shot with 9 mm and .45-caliber handguns, he said.
Seven of the injured were in critical condition at Atlanta
hospitals.
A widespread search was launched for Barton, described as
6-foot-4, white, with a receding hairline.
A previous wife and mother-in-law of Barton were bludgeoned
to death in 1993 in Cedar Bluff, Ala. No arrests were
made.
``He was the No. 1 suspect all the way through and still
was,'' said Richard Igou, district attorney at the time of
the
killings. Current District Attorney Mike O'Dell said there
is a suspect in the case, but declined to say whether it was
Barton.
Campbell quoted witnesses as saying Barton was upset about
recent stock losses, but said there were no accounts of
any specific provocation on Thursday.
``Those who have identified Mr. Barton indicated he came in,
had a normal conversation and then began shooting,''
Campbell said.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 180.78 for the
day, a drop of 1.6 percent.
Nell Jones said the gunman fired at her inside one of the
brokerage offices, but the bullet missed and she was able to
escape when he turned to shoot at others.
Ms. Jones, an attorney who was at the office to do some day
trading, said she looked into the gunman's eyes.
``He was someone who was very calm and determined, no
feelings,'' she told WSB-TV.
Some people were still hiding in offices four hours after
the shooting. Campbell said police SWAT units went through
every building in the area floor by floor, office by office,
trying to find Barton.
Police also searched the trunks of cars leaving the area.
Roadblocks went up throughout Buckhead, and motorists
heading home during the evening rush hour were stopped and
rerouted.
Three relatives of Barton were found dead at an apartment in
Stockbridge in Henry County, the town 16 miles southeast
of Atlanta where Barton lived, police said.
They would not identify the three or give any other details,
but Campbell said they may have been Barton's current wife
and two children.
Lt. Roger Stubbs of Henry County said the three deaths were
reported just 30 minutes after the Atlanta shootings,
indicating they must have happened earlier.
Campbell said Vice President Al Gore had telephoned to offer
condolences and federal assistance in coping with the
shootings.
The shootings began at All-Tech Investment, a day-trading
company on the third floor of one of the office buildings,
company officials said.
Jai Ramoutar, director of All-Tech, said Barton had not
traded there in some time.
He came into the office, ``and after speaking with our
branch manager suddenly stood up and for no reason opened
fire on the manager and his secretary,'' Ramoutar said in a
statement released from the company's headquarters in
Montvale, N.J.
``This man then went into our main trading room and began
indiscriminately shooting the customers,'' he said. ``The
man then ran out of our office and continued shooting in
another part of the office building....
``We don't know the reason, if any, for this horrible act of
violence. All-Tech's customers trade their own accounts in
our offices and this man was such a customer,'' he said.
Harvey Houtkin, 50-year-old chairman of All-Tech, said from
Montvale that his employees told him Barton hadn't traded
since April.
``He was a former client.'' Houtkin said.
Day traders buy and sell stocks, bonds or other securities
on a moment-to-moment basis, usually using computer
terminals linked to vast trading networks. While this holds
the promise of quick gains, it also makes it easy to lose
money.
At All-Tech, each day trader puts up at least $50,000 in
equity to open an account. To cope with the stress inherent
in day trading, the company employs a corporate
psychotherapist to help traders.
Atlanta was one of several cities to sue gun manufacturers,
seeking to recoup the costs of gun-related violence. But the
state legislature and the governor, heavily lobbied by the
National Rifle Association, swiftly passed a law prohibiting
such suits.
Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., is pushing legislation in Congress
that would block all cities and states from suing the gun
industry.
Georgia law requires no state permit to buy or own a gun but
does require a permit to carry a concealed weapon,
according to the National Rifle Association Web site.
Last month a psychiatrist in Michigan was killed by his
former patient, who also gunned down a 45-year-old woman and
injured four other people in the attack. He then fatally
shot himself.

I *DEMAND* that Congress pass legislation that outlaws the Stock

destruction, and in the name of "family values", SOMETHING must be done
to have it BANNED!!!!!

From what I've been told from a freind who lives in the Atlanta area,
Buckhead is a yuppie-scumbag colony. Sorta like the Aspen of the South.
Shed no tears for killer or killees.

Well, it looks like THAT office will have a few open positions come
Monday. Give it a shot (pun deliberately intended).
Yep, this one happened seven miles from my house. As of last night he's also
suspected of killing his wife and kids. The 11 oclock news said that it was
suspected that he killed his wife sometime around tuesday and kept her in the
closet. "Don't bother mommy now, she's sleeping it off in the closet......".
The kids they say were shot yesterday. I have'nt heard the news today though
to get the latest.
My neighborhood wouldn't have been a healthy place to be skulking through back
yards last night. We're in the midst a bastion of 'good old boys' who haven't
yet sold out to the yuppie scum pig molesting lawyers and such who want to
live in Buckhead but can't afford it. I was talking to a neighbor out in his
yard last night and noticed a .357 sticking out of his back pocket. When I
went back in the house the SR had also gone to the 'lock and load' mode. Yee
Haw!
Crato <gonna get rich off my house one day>
OBT: A trebuchet to loft water ballons into my neighbors wooded back yard so I
could listened to his gunfire ricocheting through the apartment complex behind
him.

I heard that on the news too and I have not yet figured out what they are
talking about. The NASDAQ went down 3% yesterday starting at 9:30am.
But by then he had already offed his second wife and kid. What is, the cops
just don't want to think. Didn't he leave a note and a hit list the night before?
I also got the impression that he had a permit to carry a gun.
He should have linked up the abortion clinic and Olympic bomber
in Atlanta to really be effective.
Almost everyone that I know feels like shooting themselves when they get on
a real downer stock but not the broker that gave them the tip. You make a
fool out of yourself, why blame someone else. Imagine day trading in 1928
when there were basically no margin limits.
ObT ... A family of coons (3) ( four legged kind ) go mashed on the road today
just where I stopped to make a left turn. The smell got into my AC and was
still there an hour later. Yesterday I passed a burning mail truck and that
smell was worse than a skunk.
