I thought everybody knew that the diameter of the disk drives
affected the reproduction of the recorded sound. The drive diameter
is optimal at a half-wavelength of the audio signal. Of course
you don't use the normal signal wavelength, because the sound is
digitally sampled, so you have to divide by the sampling rate.
A perfect drive with no damping has a very high Q, and you'd need
to get out your Smith charts to compute the standing waves and
reflections and so forth. Fortunately, manufacturers of AV drives
add damping to their mechanisms, resulting in a much broader and
flatter response.
