William Stoughton having acted as judge in
cases of witchcraft, began now to look at the
iniquity of the thing rather than the object to be
attained, and repented of the evil he had done,
in sacrificing so many innocent persons ; and, it
is said, gave to Harvard College the building
known as Stoughton Hall, to atone for his big-
otry. But Cotton Mather said, he gloried in
such executions, and thanked God for giving
him strength to perform his duty.
TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO.
It was decided to make a
trial; each clay the soil appeared more favor-
able ; they continued, until they had gone to
the depth of one hundred and three feet, when
a living spring gushed forth. Bucket after
bucket, was drawn, and pronounced pure and
most excellent.
Mary Phipps married Judge Richard Lech-
mere, who built and occupied the house on the
corner of Brattle and Sparks Streets, now occu-
pied by John Brewster Esq. Eichard Lechmere
was warden of Christ Church in 1764 and 1765.
In 1769, a suit was commenced against Judge

Lechmere by Jonathan Sewall, Attorney-Gen-
eral of Massachusetts, in favor of a negro de-
manding his freedom. The suit terminated in
favor of the negro. This is said to be the first
case in which the grand question was settled
abolishing slavery in that state.
A sermon from Psalm 46 : 4, was
delivered by Eev. Dr. Holmes, and prayers ap-
propriate to the solemnity, were offered by the
Eev. Mr. Fiske, and Kev. Professor Ware.

Episode 4: Mockingbird
With a big crowd, Dixon accuses Sydney of cheating. After the
casino guards bring her in the office, Syd shoots them with a
tranquilizer and goes to the office vault. With a laser cutter
and the key code that Tom relayed through her earpiece, Sydney
retrieves a laptop and drives away.
As she passes by a shipyard, she is stopped by a policeman and
is boxed in by another vehicle. Suddenly, a shipping crane with
a large magnet grabs her entire car and Syd is lifted hundreds
of feet off the ground. She gets a phone call from Gordon Dean
saying he wants Mockingbird back.
In the APO office 72 hours earlier, Rachel shares her guilt with
Sydney on getting her coworkers killed. When Sydney urges her to
rest and points out that it is Gordon Dean's fault, Rachel
insisted on finishing her report on Dean. Syd then asks Rachel
what "Mockingbird" is as written in some of her reports, and
Rachel replies that it's her call sign.

SANTA FE - Allegations that Los Alamos National Laboratory
managers covered up waste or mismanagement date to the mid-1990s.
And in June, two workers for a subcontractor were using a crane
to move a 1,500-pound metal staircase when the structure slipped
from its rigging, fell more than 50 feet and struck the men. An
internal lab investigation found that LANL could have prevented
the accident.
On security, Anastasio said the lab has beefed up cybersecurity
and reduced the number of classified computers and "vault-type"

Crane Safety conference nears

Less than two weeks remain before the start of the sixth Crane
Safety conference at London's Grange City hotel on 4-5 June.
A late presentation is an exploration of the use of overhead
cranes to dismantle the Chernobyl, Ukraine nuclear power station.
A factory crane session will include a discussion of anti-sway
controls from Kimmo Hytonen of Innocrane, a report of British
Nuclear Group Sellafield's overhead crane buying requirements,
and more.
Her frustration is echoed by chronically and terminally ill
people who worked at nuclear facilities across the country
during the Cold War. Men with radioactive particles lodged in
their sinuses, welders who remember iodine spills and crane
operators who breathed cesium -- these people, or their
surviving family members, say the government is betraying its
promise to compensate them for decades of radiation overdoses

head up. Distorted by the thin wash of water overhead, a large
orange and white shape hung above. As she watched, a dark blob
detached itself from the larger shape and dropped, splashing
into the water about twenty feet ahead of them. When the bubbles
cleared Patricia saw a wet-suited figure kicking his way toward
the sub.
As the cable lifted the sub, she shut everything down, locking
the console with a password. It broke the surface, then lifted
into a rectangular space lit with flickering strokes of light
coming under the door, muted and twisted by the water. Perito
waved at her, one hand on the crane controls. She smiled, very
glad to see his wide Mestizo face.
The hose shifted downward and the diver opened one of the other
manifold valves, to let water replace the outgoing material. The
pumps on the workboat sucked the tank empty in fifteen minutes,
a definite no-decompression dive for the boys out there

he has a much more active role in mind. But is he just trying to
keep the service image clean or is it something more?
Is he involved in this? Does he know who is?
Regardless, the scope of the investigation had just increased.

A brawl broke out in an alley when some Brattle Street soldiers
rushed into King Street, and, brandishing their arms, yelled,
"Where are the cowards ! Where are the scoundrels !" and fired
into a crowd killing three and badly wounding five persons. The
"Old Brick Church" bell rung and the town was thrown into great
excitement as the inhabitants rushed out, armed with sticks and
stones taken from the mar- ket, filling the streets at midnight.
A cry of fire was raised when some engines rushed to the scene.
"The soldiers are rising," was the cry, and only by great pre-
cautions was a general outbreak averted.
Witchcraft in 'New England recalls an exciting

Caliban was born of a witch; Prospero is a magician.
However, the types of magic practised by Sycorax and Prospero
differ greatly: Sycorax, in many respects a traditional witch,

Yesterday's crash recalled a scaffolding collapse at an Emerson
College construction site that killed three people in 2006.
In that instance, scaffolding weighing 3 tons plunged nearly 14
stories onto Boylston Street, killing two construction workers

agreement with Mather's Cases, a comparison of the tone and focus of

aligned openings provided in the side walls of the boss and the
threadable member receive a retaining member, such as a cotter
pin, to hold the threadable member in place on the boom section.
The openings in the threadable member may be placed at spaced
intervals to permit inward adjustment of the threadable member
to compensate for the wear of such member under repeated
extension and retraction of the boom assembly. A similar
arrangement is provided at the opposite end of the next inner
boom section, with the boss projecting inwardly and the

being moved by a gantry was dropped. I understand that a sling
or strap broke, which caused the other slings or straps to also
break, and the load (a crane) was dropped. The counterweight
swung out and demolished a portion of the stairwell which had
not been roped off by the move team. Known prior crane
accidents occurred in 1997, 1986, and during reactor
construction (reactor head dropped 6 inches) and on at least two
other occasions, although this is not actually a request for
published information about prior accidents except insofar as it
should already have been gathered for the investigation
Since the crane accident on June 1st, 2001 did not result in an
investigation, this is not a request for information which the
NRC should consider "investigative".
Does NRC have a crane safety training program for non-nuclear
fuel crane operators?
Does crane operator instruction include the reasons for the
importance of not dropping a load into a Spent Fuel Pool or
other nuclear-related portion of the plant?
All this nuclear waste has to be moved many times, by someone
using a crane. This accident and all lifting accidents at the
plant should be considered indicative of the licensee's nuclear-
fuel-handling capabilities.
How many crane inspectors work at NRC?
What information does NRC provide licensees regarding safe crane
operation?
Was/Were the person/persons who trained the persons who dropped
the load licensed for moving nuclear fuel at any time?
When were the bearings last inspected?
When were all brakes last inspected for shoe wear?
When was the bridge last checked for proper alignment?
When were all collector shoes or bars last inspected for pitting,
wear, looseness, or breakage?

A man found with traces of explosives at the entrance to a
nuclear plant in Sweden has been arrested, police said.
The substance was believed to be TATP, or triacetone triperoxide,
an extremely unstable material which can be made using household
chemicals.
TATP was used by the so-called British "shoe bomber" Richard
Reid, who planned to blow up an aeroplane in 2001.

Just a few verses before that Moses says that it is an
abomination to eat shrimp and a few verses above and below it
says you shouldn't plant two different seeds in the same hole.
It goes on etc, it is an abomination to eat a rabbit. You
shouldn't wear linen and wool together.
Basically if you're going to defend this absurdity you're going
to say that I'm failing to read the bible within the context of
its authors and of its original culture, that the bible is the
word of god through the words of human beings, speaking in the
idiom of their time - we don't take it as literally so that it
was dictated by god.
If that's the case then why still believe in the bible in the
first place if it's not god's word but mans? If man deliberately
altered the bible during its creation for his own benefit then
how does one decipher god's true word from mans alterations? How
do you know which is which? Why still keep believing the bible
is the true undeniable word of god???
An example of an alteration relates the king of Ugarit, where
his followers were the principle competition with the emerging
religion of Moses. Scribes working on the New Testament chose to
demonize Ba'al ZeBul, the "Lord on High", by distorting his name
to Beelzebub, the "Lord of the Flies". So the Bible has been
deliberately and deceptively altered for both religious and
political reasons.

I've always heard that when a person died they kicked the bucket.
What is the origin of this expression
One theory holds that the origins of the phrase lie in the
science of animal husbandry. Slaughtered hogs, with their
throats slit, were traditionally hung by their heels on a high
wooden block. Since they were hoisted to the block by a rope on
a pulley--rather like the way one pulls up a bucket from a well--
the high block, or beam, came to be known as a bucket.
Supposedly, the hogs' dying struggles as they kicked against
this so-called bucket led to the birth of the idiom. Not a
pretty picture! And not all scholars agree that this is the
origin of the term.
The other popular theory relates the phrase to an act of suicide,
in which someone stands on a bucket, puts a noose around his or
her neck, kicks the bucket away, and dies by hanging.
Unfortunately, this theory, in spite of its direct, highly
graphic relation to the words in the idiom, is as unsupported as
the swinging suicide. And kick the bucket does not normally
refer to death by suicide. Indeed, the person who kicks the
bucket may do so quite unwillingly.
Death is a subject surrounded by fear and taboos, and this has
led to two antithetical ways of avoiding the very words "death"
and "die." One device is euphemism. People talk of passing away,
passing on (as to an afterlife), departing this life, or, more
floridly, going to the great beyond. A doctor may say to a
surviving relative, "We lost him." People perish, expire, or
breathe their last. The other device is the use of irreverent,
slangy, even crude terminology. The idea is to cloak the topic
of death in humor. With anything from a casual look or a shrug
to a sneer or an expression of shock, someone may say, "Hey, she
just croaked, OK?" or, you guessed it, "...kicked the bucket."

Serendipity Ushers in the Atomic Age...
Sixty-seven years ago, Cesarina Marani, the cleaning woman of
Rome's legendary physics institute, left her mop buckets under a
desk, and forever changed nuclear energy research.
It seems the institute's scientists, including nuclear pioneer
Enrico Fermi, could not find a way to stabilize the nuclear
reactions they produced so that radiation levels could be
predicted and the power harnessed. The missing ingredient turned
out to be the water Ms. Marani had used to mop the tiles in the
hallway.
Ms. Marani left three mop buckets under the desk of a researcher
notorious for producing unexpected results. Two other
researchers spotted the buckets of water and suggested to Fermi
that they could be responsible for the unexpected experimental
outcome. Sure enough, the water was the stabilizer the nuclear
reactions needed; the water made the neutrons' impact more
powerful and consistent. This discovery allowed Fermi to
overcome an important hurdle to splitting the uranium atom, the
first step in building an atomic bomb - a feat he accomplished a
decade later in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

The cell went out of control. Mizuno cooled it over 10 days by
placing it in a large bucket of water. During this period, more
than 37 liters of water evaporated from the bucket, which means

the bucket of water the reaction began to turn off, presumably

it evaporated, leaving the cell surrounded by air. The cell
began to self heat again and it returned to its previously high

configuration, the deuterium diffusion rate is slower at high
temperatures than usual. Normal Beta-phase palladium deuteride
will de-gas more rapidly when it heats up.

accounts allege that the plant operators fed "bucket full" loads
of nuclear fuels into the processing vessels. As in ordinary
fire, too much fuel at one time in an undesirable configuration

depository to the south of the Trinity site is an eerily

Shoes
There seems to be rather a lot of them around the school!
We suspect that quite a few have been abandoned by students who
have now left HIS. So over Golden Week we will round up all
shoes and keep them in a big box for one month before throwing
them away.
This means that all students should take home all of their shoes
on or before Friday 27th April. Shoes still here during Golden
Week will be rounded up by our highly trained team of shoe
wardens and taken into custody - for one month only...
