Steelhead trout were thought to be extinct in our area....until 1998, when
Toby Shackelford, a Saddleback Valley College
student and FOF member discovered one in San Mateo Creek. The National
Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has admitted that
there ARE steelhead in San Mateo Creek, which lies in the path of the
Proposed Foothill South Toll Road. Now it is the
responsibility of the NMFS to ensure that the steelhead and their habitat
are protected so that this beleagured fish can survive.

The Feds are coming Monday evening (March 12) to hear about San Mateo Creek
and why it and the steelhead trout,
thought to be extinct in this area for nearly 50 years, should be
protected.. Putting the toll road and its urban sprawl alongside the creek
down to Trestles would pollute the creek and some extremely important
beaches. San Mateo Creek flows to Trestles Beach and provides clean water
and surf that people and fish count on to survive and enjoy!

The Feds will be interested in hearing from you. If you'd rather observe,
that's fine, too. But please attend to show your support so
that the National Marine Fisheries Service officials conducting the hearing
realize how many people here prize the steelhead, San
Clemente's beaches, clean water and our natural surroundings. We'll have
cardboard steelhead for you to wave around to show your support for saving
this fish. It'll be fun!

The event is 6-9 p.m. at the San Clemente Community Center at the corner of
Del Mar and Seville. From the north, take I-5 to Palizada, turn
right, cross El Camino and continue to the first stop sign at Ola Vista,
turn left and drive 2-3 blocks to Del Mar, right on Del Mar to
the Library (opposite Kinko's). Park in the lot behind the library.

first steelhead in decades in the creek, go to

Howzit Crew,

Went to The National Marine Fisheries Service meeting last night here in San
Clemente
regarding the San Mateo Creek & other Southern California Steelhead habitat.

DDan--l & Surfholio where there Along with about 200 other locals and
concerned persons waving cutouts
of big red fishes (THE TROUT). We sat and listened as speaker after speaker
got up and begged the
guys from the NMFS to declare Southern California Steelhead a protected
species under the endangered species act,
and the watershed leading to the Ocean (TRESTLES) critical habitat.

After each citizen spoke the crowd would erupt in applause and fish waving,
Well, all except when the lone
guy for the Toll Road got up and spoke, (A LAWYER, & HE WAS PAID TO BE
THERE) and we boo'd....

All in all the guy from the Feds actually seemed to be getting it! YES!!!!
YES!! YES!!!

Now it is your turn, Concerned Surfers and Lovers of the Steelhead (THE
CANARY IN OUR COAL MINE),

PLEASE write craig....@noaa.gov and voice your concerns, help to save
the TROUT and thereby save OUR surfing lifestyle.

thanks for listening ((((applause and fish waving))))

News From the trenches, The alt.surfer presence grows!
Good to again see DDan-l, SurfHolio, and also making the show Graeme Ray &
TikiMatt!

We all made it to the Friends of the Foothills / Surfrider meeting on
Wednesday night,

Where a standing room only crowd showed up to talk about the next step in
the process,
In this case the process is the Environmental Impact Study that will be
performed by the Federal Highways Administration. The Issue here is a
united front.

Here is the four major talking points decided by a vote of those that took
the time to show up.

1. Endangered species (READ STEELHEAD)
2. Clean water (READ TRESTLES)
3. Preservation of open space/parkland
4. Impact on development

To reach the Scoping Hearing on March 26th that starts at 6:30 p.m., drive
out Pico past Wal-Mart and turn right at La Pata. Drive up the hill to the
intersection of Amancer and turn left into the parking lot at the Christian
Heritage Church. The lot only holds about 100 cars, and the authorities
frown on street parking. Your best bets are to arrive early, car pool with
friends, or possibly meet at the Wal-Mart/Lowe's center on Pico and shuttle
from there. If you choose the latter, it would be best to park near Pico so
customers can access spaces near the stores.

SO PLEASE! NOW IS YOUR CHANCE TO ACT!!!

The surf you save may be your own!!!

Is anyone still on this subject? I need help creating a film on the southern steelhead in Orange county. I have been trying to contact multiple people involved in the project.
