Hi All,
I have just got myself a new meter, an Accu-Chek Active the meter comes with
a built in I/R port and I'm looking for software and drivers that will work
with it. Has anyone seen any programs or drivers? I would rather not go and
buy the software from Accu-Chek (As I think it should be free with the
meter - Well the drivers at least!!) So any Ideas.

Cheers
Coz

Hi

I bought this meter from my local Asda purely because on the box it says IR
link for easy pc download. This is a scam not supplying the meter with at
least the drivers.

I sent Roche an email a couple of days a go saying what a disgrace I thought
it was, I have still yet to recieve a reply.

Regards

Gary

I have the same meter. I bought the software and infrared link for my
computer from Roche. They said when I rang them that the driver would only
work with there dongle(I/R link)and was in-compatible with my laptop with
built-in I/R!!!!

In the U.S the software is free(If you don't mind having your results stored
on-line). It is exactly the same as the U.K version !!!

U.S Web link:- www.accu-chek.com

Software's called Diabetes Assistant.

I'm pretty sure you can download the drivers from there as well, but don't
quote me on that :)

Yet again the U.K gets ripped of.

I used to use an Accu-Check Advantage but Roche's so called help desk
was so unhelpful when I tried to get control solutions I gave up and
bought a One Touch Ultra. Best move I made. Lifescan's help desk is very
good, you have to buy a cable to connect to the computer but it only
cost £10 and came the next morning after ordering it and the software is
very good and a free download from their web site. Would not touch a
Roche product with a barge pole now.

Hi,
Now that`s strange, because I found Roche helpline very good. I can`t
comment on Lifescan since I never used them - they moight be better, for all

I've got everything prepared for my OneTouch Ultra but the blasted socket in
the back of my PC is right next to the Monitor plug so the thing won't fit
along side it!!!! Any suggestions?

I know what you mean, I moved the socket on my system, it was fairly easy
and possibly you can get the socket moved by a PC shop. Another thing you
can do is get a cable with smaller connectors, 9 pin male to 9 pin female,
the connections must be "pin to pin".
I don't know which connections are used but if you can solder it yourself ,
you can buy the bits at Tandy or somewhere similar and simply connect all
the pins, pin 1 female to pin 1 male etc. If you can't solder it, a normal 9
pin RS232 cable, male to female may work and will not do any damage if it
doesn't, this must be "straight through" not "crossover" the same as a modem
cable.
I will test to see if it works trough a modem cable and let the group know.
I just need to get the cable from work as I normally do this in the office.

Sid.

I could try that but unless I goto PC World, I'll lose my warranty. And I

This seems to be the idea that I had originally. Where could I get one of
these connectors from? I need a 9-pin male to 9-pin female. It only needs to
be 2 inches long!

Fair enough, I understand. Because I am in the trade, I tend to use
wholesalers.

A standard 9 pin to 9 pin Modem cable will fit, and they are really cheap,
they are a bit longer than you say though, shouldn't be a problem as the
spec says 50 feet maximum length.
Tandy and such places may have stuff you could try. Make sure it is pin to
pin and not crossover as I don't know if the meter is safe when the
connection is reversed.

I've just bought the software an IR adaptor and I'm very pleased with
it. At the same time I had them send me some free batteries and
control solution for my two active meters. The helpline were very
err... helpfull.

p.s. you can use the IR adaptor for connecting your mobile phone to
your pc too (nokia data suite for 8310 works nicely), only to use the
compass software you have to disable the IR port in the device manager
as the compass software seems to access it directy (with its own built
in drivers) and sees a conflict if you have the XP IR port drivers
enabled.

That'd be great. the socket in the back of my PC is male and the plug on my
meter cable is female so I need a crossover, am I right?
We don't have a Tandy in Leeds so any other suggestions?

No you need a straight through ( sometimes called an extension)

A cross over lead is used from one device to another pins 2 cross over to 3
and 3 over to 2

I have some if you want one give me a n address and I will send you one

I use my modem cable. It's a 25 pin connector at the modem end, I just unplug
from the modem and plug in the Lifescan cable. Works a treat as long as I
remember to replug in the modem.

No, definitely not a cross-over, this may result in damage to the meter and
definitely will not work. As I said, pin to pin/ straight through, 9 pin
male to 9 pin female. I will have results of testing a 9 pin modem cable
today.

Thanks everyone for the advise,
I phoned the help line today and was told that the only software that would
work was their own and that it comes complete with an I/R dongle for £29
(nearly 200% more than the cost of the meter itself). I asked if I needed
the new I/R adapter and was told "yes it will only work with our dongle".
Hmmmm I'm not happy!!! but I have however ordered the software/dongle but
plan on taking this up with any UK media that will listed, (possibly
Watchdog) as I feel that Roche are using false advertising on the product by
not saying that you must buy additional products from themselves and also
not providing drivers for a device that is supposedly PC compatible.
I've have been quoted an "amazing" 28days for delivery so as soon as I get
my grubby (and sore) fingers on it I will be testing it on every other I/R
adaptor/dongle I have just to see if they have also sold me an I/R dongle
that I don't need.
Anyway... would anyone here be interested in joining me in my complaints (in
the form of e-mails to Watch dog) about Roche's conduct/polices on this
matter??

High, My modem cable works fine, it is standard and purchased at the
cheapest PC shop I could find.
Some modems have a 25 pin connector, this is not suitable, it must match the
cable from the meter. The end that connects to the PC can be whatever the PC
has available, 25 or 9 pin. It may work with less connections, but a
standard modem cable would be my choice.

The software doesn't use drivers.

You just plug the Tekram 210B into a serial port and it works (although it
didn't used to on Windows XP). Windows Me and XP will detect it and that is
what I was told not to let the machine do.

Perhaps you should have complained about the lack of instructions rather
than drivers.

Martin.

What OS you using? You do not need need any special gear for the active. It
is a std serial device that you just plug in. The software is fine and the
IR device works too. Buying a serial port and installing it is just
unnecessary!

This all sound silly.

I paid my money and ordered the software which at £29 was not a bad price.
I got the software supplied with a Tekram IRMate210B a quality industry std
IrDa device and cables. The drivers are built into the Compass program so
using any external drivers will stop the diabetes program downloading
properly. It works fine. It didn't take forever to arrive and I called
Roche who talked me through the installation. No problems at all. It is
just as good as the Ultra software with all the cables for that. I use both
meters as the Ultra is my "work" meter. I have no preference between them
except the finger pricker on the Active is less painful and the Ultra tends
to give a slightly higher reading!

BTW. With the windows drivers installed I can use the IR device with my
phone and printer... bonus. The only problem I've had was when I moved to
Windows XP as at that time the compass program would not work with windows.
These IR devices aren't especially cheap so the cost isn't that bad!

Martin.

Cheers Scraggle,

I've not had a lot of luck with BearShare - seems to be a lot of virus stuff
floating around and I'm not to keen on the Ad's (but got the PRO version
now:))
The IP I was looking for was not your own but one of the host's that you
were connecting to the network through (Could be anyone running BearShare in
UltraPeer or Peer mode), because of the sequential way that BearShare
searches if there is only one or two copies of a file it can be almost
impossible track it down:( but no worries only 20 something left days till
my copy arrives:)
I still have not got my copy of LOTR's to play (I need to spend some time
looking for codec's etc) and talking of upgrading PC's, I'm in the same
boat.... even my gf has a better system than me:((

Sorry It's laken so long for me to reply (burst another blood vestle in my
eye and have been staying as far away from the 'puter as possible:( You
right about the bandwidth on BS there is a page that expllanes it all here -
http://www.bearshare.com/forum/showthread.php?s=9c77383581dd8d97dfb4db817ece

I've now got my software from Roche (It took 2 weeks) and I gotta say apart
from the IR download working (because they build in specific IR drivers so
you have to buy there software/IR module) I'm not overly impressed - I
admittedly have not played with it too much but I think the reports could be
made better if they included the information about Carb intake etc...

PC upgrades its pretty much the same here I got two P400's (one running at
233 due to a burnt out over clocked CPU) both with 128meg and untold hard
drive space spanned out over about 8 drives, so I'm also in real need of a
upgrade or two. I agree with your choice of CPU - seems to be the best value
at the moment - if I get one it will be my first non Intel chip ...ever

Cheers M8.... I will have a look - thinking of writing my own program now as
all the ones I've looked at so far have had something missing (I'm a fussy
ba*tard) will have a look at all that's there though as you never know:).
Plus I might find some features that I can include in my own program:)

Have A look here

http://www.flyingrat.net (click the link for the diabetes pages)

A link there to download software, some custom-built stuff from a guy
in the US who has also adapted it to use UK standards. I keep a copy of
it there for anyone in the UK who might want to use it, with his
permission naturally.

It's called Health and is freeware. Much more comprehensive.

The Americans have to pay individually for their healthcare insurance, we
don`t. You sure we are ripped off? or is is swings and roundabouts? Just a
though, not a criticism.

Have bought the same meter and the ROCHE supplied "dongle" which is
basically a IR to serial port convertor. The software will only look for the
IR port on a COM port and I couldn;t get it to work with my laptop's IR as
this is the only config available.
I can if you want burn you a copy of the software as it is expensive.

Let me know

Can't you configure your IR port as a dummy COM port? I remember doing it
under Win95 but can't remember how!!

No. The machine will only work with their IR dongle. Best thing to do is buy
their compass software. Am using it at the moment and it is fine.
