Perhaps the cupboard isn't as bare as has been reported

Mets 1B prospect Peter Alonso may still be at least a few weeks away
from his big league debut, but his knocks on the door are getting
louder.

Alonso crushed a three-run homer and RBI double while going 4-for-5
during Triple-A Las Vegas' afternoon game on Tuesday after also
homering this past Friday and Saturday.

The 23-year-old Alonso has 11 hits in his last 25 at-bats, and now has
27 homers in 108 games this season between Double-A Binghamton and
Vegas. Overall this season, Alonso is hitting .278/.397/.543.

"Alonso combines elite exit velocities with strong plate discipline to
produce huge righthanded power," Matt Eddy wrote for Baseball America
on July 21, while ranking Alonso the Mets' second-best prospect
(behind Andres Gimenez). "The 2016 second-rounder has done nothing but
mash since turning pro and has hit his way to Triple-A in short order.
Alonso profiles as a middle-of-the-order masher and below-average
defensive first baseman who will supply substantial value with his
bat."

Mets assistant GM John Ricco said last week that Alonso was entrenched
in Triple-A for now, but it would make sense for him to get a long
look this September as the team decides what to do at first base in
2019 and beyond.

I never thought it was, to be honest. We never thought of Lugo or
Gsellesman as anything until the got a chance to pitch, Obviously they
are short in the catching position organization wide.

It's strange that historically, catcher was a position the Mets had

major league ready catchers.

Looking forward to seeing him next month.

And there's also SS Andres Gimenez, who is rated their best prospect. He turns 20 in September, and was recently promoted to double-a Binghamton:

Reading that over, there's not much to not like. You can see the potential future infield starting to shape up with 1B Alonso, 2B McNeil, and SS Gimenez.

Apparently, they don't want to promote him, to retain another year of team control. They have a road block at 1st as well. Callaway wants him,
but upper management thinks it would be a long term mistake.

When you think about it, I tend to agree.

I don't think promoting him right now is a good idea, and I don't think the rationale is control.

He's really not ready. Give him a full year down there and see what he has. First base is covered.

Mickey Callaway hoping to see Peter Alonso with Mets in September
He has 101 RBIs combined at Double-A and Triple-A this season and has been working on his defense at first base.

OK Good

And he has a 253 .356 .552 slash line in Vegas at age 23...

Do you think he will be better than Flores?

That was simply quoted from the article. Better than Flores? Maybe.
His batting average shows he may have a big hole that ML pitchers will utilize.

One thing we've learned, hitting at Vegas has little correlation with how players will perform with the Mets. He certainly has power. Potentially a lot of power.

Rather see him playing than Bautista. He's not even hitting .200. The mighty Reyes may have a higher batting average before this carnival show is over.

They also don't even have to put him on the 40 man roster yet this
winter, which I think is the main reason for not calling him up in
September.

Grote, Sterns, Carter, Hundly, Piazza, DeLuco, D'Arnaud is pretty damn
good.

It is not the Mets. MLB is developing no catching. Ever since they
changed the rules on blocking the plate, nobody wants to do it anymore.

The catching they have now is adequate and I would keep Mesoraco

The pitchers love him, and who better to judge a catcher than a pitcher.

They should get their slugging from the corner positions and speed up the middle. He actually has a bit of power. And, d'Arnold still may come through, even if part time.

So the main thing about wanting to be a catcher is to get creamed while blocking the plate?

Silly argument...even sillier than usual for that Ruben guy. It's not even worth responding to him any longer as he's basically turned into a lame troll.
