...no one has tried to make a remake of Ben Hur.
Just happened to notice it is showing at the moment on TV.
Charlton Heston, hamming it up as usual.
I do remember enjoying it first time round.
Who would you choose to play Ben Hur, should there be such a remake?/

I think it has to be a Brit, I am sorry to say, I never thought the
American accent was at all suited to Biblical epics. Remember John Wayne
in The Greatest Story Ever Told.

/quote/

Being a perfectionist, George Stevens did many takes of John Wayne's
single line, "Truly, this man was the son of God." A rumor has long
persisted that at one stage Stevens pleaded with Wayne to show more
emotion, an overwhelming sense of awe. During the next take, Wayne
changed the line to, "Aw, truly this man was the son of God."

Only a Brit can authentically speak in King James Bible English, God's

Well I didn't say that, nor do I want to get into any kind of religious
discussion, you know perfectly well I don't believe in God so therefore
it follows that I don't believe that the Bible is written in Gods
language. I do know that a Roman Centurion in the time of Jesus, didn't
have an American accent.

I am beginning to think I never should have started this. I didn't give
it nearly enough thought before offering my opinion. You can't have

Did he? We are talking movie speak here aren't we?
I meant no slur on American vernacular, nor indeed on their literary
language, just that spoken by some actors, in films.

Oh spare me! It was bad enough the first time around with all that

John Wayne is excelled in his woodenness only by that David Caruso? chap
(red head) in CSI Miami. My sewing dummy would be a better actor than

These days that would be a mild non nasal NY accent.

A lot of English speakers have changed (by which I mean moderated) their
accents over the last 50 years.

How can someone be described as "an actor" if they can't ACT?

I remember that when the movie of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar"
featuring Marlon Brando came out in about 1953, people were pleasantly
surprised that he (Brando) did so well as Mark Anthony. People still
associated him with "On the Waterfront" and "Streetcar Named Desire"
with his Brooklyn accent. Imho his later movies demonstrated his
remarkable ability to adapt to greatly differing English speaking
styles.

I have a TV mini-series recorded on my FreeSat box from Channel 5 on 28/12/2011,
starring Joseph Morgan, which I haven't yet watched.
I hadn't heard of Joseph Morgan before, but he looks like a nice boy. Welsh, of

When I visit Oz, it usually takes me a while to attune my listening to the
Aussie accent. Of course, I'm a bit hard of hearing, which exacerbates the
problem. I used to be much better at understanding foreign accents than I
am now. That's probably because my hearing has worsened. When I was in
college, I belonged to the International Club, where we had members from
various Arab countries, as well as China, Canada and assorted countries in
Europe. I seldom had problems understanding any of them.

Well that rather depends on if there is a lot of background noise. I hate
most modern movies where the background noise is so darned load that you
can't hear the actors.

I find that it helps if you know you have to listen and thus focus.

A friend of mine, whose father was born in Greece had a very heavy accent.
I knew he had an accent and I knew that even before I met him.

Apparently he decided that I was just wonderful because I didn't constantly
ask him what he said. It was totally unearned praise because I just
focussed on listening to what he said and I didn't automatically baulk at
his accent.

He spoke very well and his knowledge of English was good but he just ahd a
heavy accent. I can't understand why my friend's other friends would have
had so much trouble with his speaking.

I was trying to see what on earth went wrong with this thread. I
see.... Then I was thinking of a six degrees game. But more like
within six posts, the thread will take a bad turn.

Why doesn't someone think of snipping?

It has more to do with missing carats (and Jean sjhoud know wha they are)
than the lack of snipping. Missing carats irritate me and I'm sure it has
to do with certain email programs.

I agree with you on that. When the carats are missing, I usually put *** to
divide my reply from the post, to make it a little easier to distinguish
which is which.

No, you aren't.

You asked what happened with the thread and then Gordon suggested it was to
do with snipping. I'm suggesting that it has more to do with missing carats
than a lack of snipping. The carats are missing when people respond to
Charlie's posts so I suspect it is something to do with wahtever mail prog
Charlrie uses. Charlie is not the only person whose replying posts lack
carats. The lack makes for mix ups in who said what. Joy has noticed a
problem with missing carats and so have I. YMMV.

If you use Thunderbird, with Quote Colors, all the posts come in
different colours, so there is no mistaking who wrote what.
I have used several different news readers and still find Thunderbird
the best for this.
I still uses the chevrons in the reply, so still no mistaking whose post.

It's a separate issue, but both are irritating...
To save me having to page down several times I tend to block posts above
100 lines, maybe I need to cut that down a little. Admittedly some
of the threads involving dummies like Charlie & co make amusing reading
un-snipped, but one page is enough, two are acceptable, more than that
is tedious.

No Baz. We have beef cattle so no milking involved.

We've been to our other farm today and taken Himself to the Doctor to have
some sticihes removed from having a skin goobie removed - potential Squamous
Cell cancer.

I should be in the veg garden weeding but it's too hot so I'm faffing round
on the computer before I go off and do some spinning. You?

Timothy has finally left Sydney today for Brisbane....His double bed is

Well perhaps to fill the hours and do get out of the empty house, you could
take up dancing like Gordon does Baz. I udnerstand that older gents who
dance are very popular.

He should be from the sound of the results on the tests. I 've had a
similar hacking on my left arm and his was on his right arm - guess which
side of the car we each sit on :-))

Any social group at our age is predominantly female, but especially
dancing. I joined the walking group yesterday for the first time
since breaking my ankle in July, and got a warm welcome.
Even the men seemed glad to see me, too. ;-)
