Changes made from version 6.15.7 to 6.15.11:

* Improved performance for custom draw elements.
* Made sure waypoints of type 'Geotagged Photo' don't crash MapSource.
* Allowed the import and export of unlock codes.
* Made sure unlocking changes get propagated without needing to
restart the application.
* Phone numbers that were imported from gpx files were not written
back out again. This is now fixed.
* Added support for enhanced map security.
* Fixed unlocking issue.
* Implemented Asian 6-level address search.
* Improved trimming performance for some Asian map products.

Can this be updated via the 6.15.9 MapSource program (i.e., Check For
Updates)?

Beware - removes some unlock codes previously unlocked (e.g. Nepal
maps) even though it 'knows' the codes.

This is in fact a new unlock methodology, and not all unlocked maps
will continue to work, and potentially free maps won't either. Hands
off!

This is why it's always good to copy your MapSource.exe and
MapSource_Lang.dll file to a new sub-folder first. Then install any update.
This way you can always create links back to your old version of MapSource
in the new backup folder and run it concurrently without problems.

Many claim you only need to backup the EXE file but this is not true. The
associated MapSource_Lang.dll file also has to accompany it if there are
major changes between versions. If using it as other than the english
version then backup your particular MapSource???.dll file as well.

I've tested this with versions going back over 6 years, at some point
between version changes you will need to keep the associated
MapSource_Lang.dll file with its original EXE file. Not doing so for a
while will work. Then one day you install a new version and you find out
that linking back to just the old EXE file simply won't work anymore
without it having the original MapSource_Lang.dll file to call.

I keep 3 different versions concurrently available this way. V6.5 which was
the last to included onscreen GPS tracking like nRoute does. Because when
used on a laptop in a vehicle for traveling, or desktop in a more
well-equipped RV, it's good to keep the more extensive features of
MapSource up and running at the same time that you need to track your
location while en route. Though, unfortunately, that version doesn't seem
to see nor support the NT map-set types. I also keep the last version to
support Win98, v6.11.5 should I have to put my hard drive into another
older emergency computer. And then I always back-up the latest version
should there be a potential lock-out from older maps or for other new-bugs
or "change the game for security" reasons, i.e. "enhanced map security".

Isn't it fun when a company decides to change the rules to benefit only
themselves while making the product less functional for everyone else? Then
they wonder why there are pirates afoot. Companies never play even by their
own rules that they previously set for everyone, so why then should anyone
else. They set such fine examples for everyone.

p.s. ALWAYS keep backups of your firmware updates too so you can always
roll-back to a previous firmware at any time. Never rely solely on
web-update methods that simply disappear into your GPS device. Make sure
you download the one you can install from your own hard-drive. You may one
day find out they decide you shouldn't get to even use your old GPS
anymore, just because they can, and then tell you why you need to purchase
a new one. They make their own rules for their benefit, you make your own
rules for your benefit. It's the only possible fair trade in this day and
age.

Old versions of MapSource are still on Garmin's server. For example,
6.15.7, the version I'm running can be found at

http://www8.garmin.com/software/MapSource_6157.exe

while the new version is at

http://www8.garmin.com/software/MapSource_61511.exe

I don't know how far back they go.

Does anyone know if DXF export is still in the recent versions?

the DFX and GPX file-saving options only seem to show up as "save as" types
after you have loaded or defined some previous waypoints and tracks. So
yes, they are still there, just not apparent at first cursory inspection.

I think you also have to have something "selected" for "saving", but
in the older versions it was the "export" function to get a dxf file,
not "save as".

Is there still an "export" function in the newer versions, and do you
still have export to dxf as an option if you have something selected
for export?

Nope - no 'export'. It's 'save as'.

And does it "save as" dxf the whole map, or is there still the
"select" function active that allows making a dxf that has just a
subset of points, tracks, routes, whatever?
