On November 1, 1755, Lisbon was destroyed by an earthquake. The
news reached Voltaire and stirred him to the soul. Thirty
thousand people were destroyed almost in the twinkling of an eye.

Voltaire wrote a searching poem on the problems of life,
entitled "The Disaster of Lisbon." At the same time was

Voltaire answered these questions as all other thinkers have
even answered them, that upon these subjects man has no guide
and no light. But the churches and the authorities read, or at
least heard of, these two poems. They were promptly burned in
Paris and pious Genevans held up their hands in horror at the
theology, or rather lack of theology, which they taught. But the
Lisbon earthquake shocked the world. Even the king of France had
serious thoughts, so serious that he caused the private entrance
to Madame Pompadour's apartments to be closed and made her a

The reader cannot too carefully bear in mind that this
dictionary has not been written for the purpose of repeating
what so many others have said.
The knowledge of a God is not impressed upon us by the hands of
nature, for then men would all have the same idea; and no idea
is born with us. It does not come to us like the perception of
light, of the ground, etc., which we receive as soon as our eyes
and our understandings are opened. Is it a philosophical idea?
No; men admitted the existence of gods before they were
philosophers.
Whence, then, is this idea derived? From feeling, and from that
natural logic which unfolds itself with age, even in the rudest
of mankind. Astonishing effects of nature were beheld- harvests
and barrenness, fair weather and storms, benefits and scourges;
and the hand of a master was felt. Chiefs were necessary to
govern societies; and it was needful to admit sovereigns of
these new sovereigns whom human weakness had given itself?beings
before whose power these men who could bear down their fellow-
men might tremble. The first sovereigns in their time employed
these notions to cement their power. Such were the first steps;
thus every little society had its god. These notions were rude
because everything was rude. It is very natural to reason by
analogy. One society under a chief did not deny that the
neighboring tribe should likewise have its judge, or its captain;
consequently it could not deny that the other should also have
its god. But as it was to the interest of each tribe that its
captain should be the best, it was also interested in believing,
and consequently it did believe, that its god was the mightiest.
Hence those ancient fables which have so long been generally
diffused, that the gods of one nation fought against the gods of

we find constantly disclosing the opinion entertained by the
Jews, that the gods of their enemies existed, but that they were

there were priests, Magi, and philosophers.
Some of these perfected their reason so far as to acknowledge in

is something eternal; for nothing is produced from nothing.

today at work I heard of a young boy age 9 who lost one of his

Kids in his elementary school were poking fun of him and making

earthquake in Haiti which is quite sad for all the pain,
suffering, loss of life, and loss of the comforts of existence.
I'm going to pledge something online to help those less

earthquake punishment to the people of Haiti for the inhabitants
making a deal with the devil over 200 years ago. That's why God

Since seizing power in Chile with the coup d'etat
against President Salvador Allende, General Pinochet has
tirelessly sought the support of the Vatican for his military
regime, claiming as credentials his Catholic faith and his
crusade against Marxism, in complete harmony with John Paul II,
who is also an anti-Marxist. Whilst the Archbishop of Santiago
(Chile), cardinal Silva Enrquez, was denouncing Pinochet's
attack on human rights - including the right to life - through
the Vicara de Solidaridad (Vicariate of Solidarity), the Vatican
legitimated the dictator's actions, above all through the
Nunciature (Vatican's Embassy).
After the setback with the plebiscite of October 1988, which
forced him to give up power, Pinochet doubled his efforts in
order to ensure the backing of the Vatican, confident that it
would speak out in his defence should he be prosecuted. And his
shadow extended to the Roman Curia, where some of the positions
of highest responsibility are occupied by ecclesiastical
personalities that are sympathetic to him.We can look first, at
Cardinal Angello Sodano, Papal Nuncio (Vatican's Ambassador) in
Chile during Pinochet's dictatorship, and with whom he
maintained a close friendship, based on political affinities. He
arranged the visit of John Paul II to Chile in 1987, and was
behind each of the Pope's gestures of legitimisation towards the
dictator. Years later, Sodano replaced Cardinal Casaroli as
Vatican's secretary of state, a position that he currently
occupies. Although this position is "second-in-command" in terms
of the Vatican's hierarchy, in practice he acts like number one.
To mark Pinochet's golden wedding anniversary, he sent the
couple a personal letter of congratulation, full of praise.
After meeting in Castelgandolfo with the Chilean Vice-Minister
for Foreign Affairs, in November 1998, Sodano wrote to the
British government, asking that mercy be shown towards his
friend the general, citing humanitarian reasons, reconciliation
between Chileans, and, ultimately, the sovereignty of the
Chilean State.
At the head of the Roman Congregation for the Divine Cult and
the Sacraments is another admirer of Pinochet: the Chilean
Cardinal Jorge Medina, who was Archbishop of Valaparaso, Chile's
chief port and the birthplace of Salvador Allende. He is a
bitter and self-confessed enemy of Liberation Theology, which he
has persecuted with exceptional harshness. He has been quite
prepared to admit publicly that the Vatican has been working to
avoid Pinochet's prosecution and for his prompt return to Chile.

Note that the Legion leaders have not made any effort whatsoever
to thank these heroes who tried to warn us all about the
deviancy of Maciel.
They haven't even retracted the libelous accusations they made
against these victims all those years. Maciel is dead. He never
made any attempt to publicly repent or make restitution to all
those one-time children he raped. We will let God judge him and
leave it at that. But what's left is the order of priests he
structured in such a way that he had access to boys, women,
money, drugs, and power. The very "virtues" he taught (as his
very twisted notion of the virtue of charity exemplifies)
allowed this abuse to go on. Structures like the 4th Vow (a vow
he created while he was under Vatican investigation for the
first time, back in the 50's, by the way. How convenient!)
created an environment in which he could live a life of
debauchery and abuse with impunity. The Legion's pitiful
response to the crisis has proven to me just how endemic the
methodology of Maciel is to the order. To have an order of
priests continuing to express their deep gratitude to a child
molester is beyond scandalous. What an embarrassment to our Holy
Church.

Fr. Cardenas is a fine example of all that is wrong with the LC.
He is a politically astute opportunist, void of the most human
sentiments and convictions
He has achieved a certain level of comfort and autonomy in the
LC system and will do or say anything to maintain the status quo.
He is shallow and callous, he looks out only for himself and he
threw Fr. Maciel under the bus as soon as it became impossible
to defend him. Cardenas and his ilk run the LC, but they are
held in secret contempt by their subjects and brother priests
who see them for what they really are, even when the
circumstances prohibit them from taking a more valient stand
