Scientology critics to get bricks
April 26, 2001, Deborah O'Neil, St. Petersburg Times
http://www.sptimes.com/News/042601/TampaBay/Scientology_critics_t.shtml

"The decision not to order three bricks has been rescinded," Citizens
for a Better Clearwater wrote in a letter received this week by John
Merrett, an attorney for the Scientology critics. "Upon receipt, these
bricks will be placed in the Cleveland Street Gas Light Alley with
other inscribed bricks."

The brick request by Jeff Jacobsen and Stacy Brooks, both staff members
at a Scientology watchdog group named the Lisa McPherson Trust, touched
off a tremor downtown, demonstrating how seemingly innocuous efforts
can become controversial because of the relationship between the church
and its opponents.

Scientologists visiting Va. Tech to help

BLACKSBURG -- Brian Grogan, 26, was chomping on a hot dog before
heading to work Wednesday when he noticed people in canary yellow
T-shirts handing out religious pamphlets.

A moment later, he realized they were Scientologists.

"They're leeches," Grogan said. "They show up wherever something bad
happens and use that to spread their propaganda."

Scientology: Amy Scobee speaks out
April 26, 2010, Bryan Seymour, Today Tonight
http://au.todaytonight.yahoo.com/article/7112145/general/scientology-amy-scobee-speaks

Inside Scientology, superstar Tom Cruise is regarded as its most
dedicated follower. The mystery is why he never joined its most elite
unit.

Now, a former top-ranking defector who was just a teenager when
recruited into Scientology says she knows why.

Amy Scobee claims she knows the truth about how the cult controls
celebrities, the way it handled Tom Cruise's marriage to Nicole Kidman
and tells eyewitness accounts of what happens when its leader loses it.

She began life and work in the organisation's elite unit, called the
Sea Org. It was there she met some of their brightest stars and learned
some of their darkest secrets.

Church of Scientology buys historic Hollywood studios
April 26, 2011, Ben Child, The Guardian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/apr/26/church-of-scientology-buys-hollywood-studio

The Church of Scientology has bought a historic Los Angeles studio
facility which was once the home of major Hollywood film production
houses.

The 4.5-acre property on Sunset Boulevard was formerly the home of
Monogram Pictures and Allied Artists, among other film studios. Since
1970 it has been owned by KCET, America's largest independent public
television station.

Is Tom Cruise Worthy of a Simon Wiesenthal Award? Also: Scientology's
Building Spree
April 26, 2011, Tony Ortega, Runnin' Scared, Village Voice
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/04/is_tom_cruise_w.php

Berrin found that the Center's board didn't seem too concerned about
Tom's involvement in Scientology. One trustee told her Cruise shouldn't
be held responsibility for the actions of an entire religion. Another
said Cruise was a major giver to the Center and had been for two
decades. A third trustee admitted she didn't know anything about
Scientology (ugh).

Perhaps most importantly, Berrin found that the Simon Wiesenthal Center
trustees seemed almost proud of how much controversy their choice was
kicking up. And with the FBI investigation into Scientology maybe not
really turning out to be going anywhere, it's hard to imagine the SWC
caving over it.

In other Scientology News, The Daily's Hunter Walker has another good
dispatch, this one about Scientology's ongoing real estate buying spree.

April 26, 2012, ABC News, ABC News
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/04/church-of-scientology-former-church-official-settle-lawsuits-out-of-court/

Court documents show the settlement terms were filed on Monday and say
that the church will drop its demand for damages against Cook and her
husband Wayne Baumgarten. One provision in the settlement said Cook and
Baumgarten are permanently and forever enjoined from "printing,
posting, disseminating, circulating, quoting publicly, uttering or
publishing any kind of statement in any form which is critical of,
defamatory or disparaging against any of the Church Parties, either
directly or indirectly."

No money was involved in the settlement.

Dueling lawsuits filed by the Church of Scientology and one of its
highest-ranking former executives have been settled out of court.

leader David Miscavige physically punch another Scientology executive
in the face at the church's international headquarters in Riverside
County.

Swiss woman starves to death on daylight diet
April 26, 2012, Herald Sun
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/archive/news/swiss-woman-starved-to-death-on-daylight-diet/story-e6frf7lf-1226339082591

A SWISS woman starved to death after believing she could survive on
light alone.

The woman embarked on the diet after watching the controversial 2010
documentary film "In the beginning there was light," newspaper Tages
Anzeiger said today.

The movie centres on Swiss chemistry doctor Michael Werner, 62, and
83-year-old Indian yogi Prahlad Jani, who both claim to derive
sustenance from spiritual means rather than the intake of food - a
concept also known as breatharianism.

Dianetics is Not Hypnosis - Well, Except For That "You Are Feeling Sleepy"
Part

http://tonyortega.org/2013/04/26/dianetics-is-not-hypnotism-well-except-for-that-you-are-feeling-sleepy-part/

Welcome to our ongoing project, where we blog a 1950 first edition of
Scientology's bible, Dianetics, with the help of ex-Scientologist,
lawyer, and author Vance Woodward. Go here for the first post in the
series.

We're now getting into a very interesting part of Dianetics. We're
finally going to learn some actual methods of auditing, and L. Ron
Hubbard wants us to understand that what he is teaching us is in no way
hypnosis.

Of course, when Hubbard is very emphatic about something, you should
always figure that the opposite may be true. Let's take a look at the
way he describes how to get a subject into the proper dianetic "reverie"...

Photo by WSB's Pete Combs Pete Combs at Atlanta's WSB Radio announced
today that state and county officials entered Scientology's drug rehab
center in the Atlanta area - Narconon Georgia - and confiscated
evidence in an ongoing state investigation of insurance fraud.

[Two important updates on this story below...]

Combs says that half a dozen officers, including two Gwinnett County
police officers, entered the premises with search warrants today and
then hauled away boxes of records and computers, and also interviewed
employees.

Search warrants executed at Narconon drug rehab clinic
April 26, 2013, Christian Boone, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local/search-warrants-executed-at-narconon-drug-rehab-cl/nXYzn/

Search warrants were executed Friday by the Gwinnett County district
attorney's office investigating suspected insurance fraud by a Norcross
drug rehabilitation clinic that recently had its license revoked by the
state.

As first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Channel 2 Action
News and WSB Radio, Narconon of Georgia allegedly billed a patient's
insurer $166,275 for doctor visits that never occurred and treatment
that was never provided.

Selling out, and other strange side-effects of Scientology watching
April 26, 2014, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
http://tonyortega.org/2014/04/26/selling-out-and-other-strange-side-effects-of-scientology-watching/

We have a couple of really complex and lengthy stories working, but
they take a lot of time to put together. In the meantime, we have some
strange odds and ends that have been building up here in the Bunker and
we thought we'd share some of them.

For example, a couple of weeks ago, we received this e-mail, recreated
here in its entirety:

"You sell-out!!!!!!! You are not posting anything I wrote, but instead
are posting what THEY want you to post. SELL-OUT!!"

EXCLUSIVE: Secretly taped briefing uncovers precarious state of Scientology
right now
April 26, 2015, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
http://tonyortega.org/2015/04/26/exclusive-secretly-taping-briefing-uncovers-precarious-state-of-scientology-right-now/

The Underground Bunker has obtained a secretly recorded audiotape that
reveals what "public" Scientologists are being told by church
management at a time when Scientology is reeling from negative press
and dwindling membership, and members are under incredible pressure to
donate money.

This is the second time in recent weeks that we've been provided a rare
view inside Scientology, which is notoriously circumspect about what
actually goes on behind its closed doors. On March 30, we posted a
truly stunning recording that captured a woman being "declared" a
"suppressive person," resulting in her expulsion and then facing the
prospect of her family being ripped apart.

Now, we have a different kind of sound file. It was recorded very
recently at an American "org" (we're not going to disclose which one at
this point), and it features a small group of "publics" (non-staff
Scientologists) getting a briefing from a Sea Organization member named
Andres Rodriguez (pictured).
