Scientologists want help with brochure cost
October 10, 1987, Tony Doris, St. Petersburg Times
http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/sptimes/access/50130823.html?dids=50130823:50130823&FMT=FT

The brochure was up-tempo, glossy and multicolored; it said positive
things about downtown Clearwater - and it was free, compliments of the
Church of Scientology.

"Come to downtown Clearwater," it said. "Sparkling, friendly service,
international shopping and dining, plenty of spacious parking!! and
more...."

Merchants liked the guide to downtown shopping, which was published
about two years ago and distributed to countertops throughout the
business district. Now they want an update, and the Scientologists are
ready to oblige.

The hitch? This time the Scientologists are asking for help with the
expenses - between $6,000 and $8,000 for printing. The Downtown
Clearwater Association and Downtown Development Board, representing
shopkeepers and property owners, are all for it.

Drug center pros, cons aired - 400 attend emotional hearing
October 10, 1990, Doug Ferguson, Tulsa World

Comments from the public hearing will he reviewed by the Mental Health
Board at a meeting Oct. 18 in Norman, at which time it could grant
Narconon provisional certification.

Certification is needed before the state Health Department can license
the center.

Narconon accepted 25 patients in February and continued to operate
without certification. A Kay County district judge ruled Sept. 7, about
a week after Narconon formally applied for certification, that it could
continue to operate without taking new patients.

Narconon Hearing Draws Support And Opposition
October 10, 1990, Patti Weaver, Tulsa World
http://www.tulsaworld.com/archives/narconon-hearing-draws-support-and-opposition/article_7df91a11-b6b3-57da-9ab7-5814c4be180f.html

Despite strong feelings from opponents and supporters, a crowd of
nearly 300 remained orderly during a Tuesday public hearing on
Narconon's application for state certification as a drug and alcohol
treatment center.

Narconon's operation of the 75-bed drug and alcohol facility on Indian
land at Chilocco has received strong opposition, primarily because of
its ties to the Church of Scientology.

A recommendation on whether Narconon will be issued state certification
is expected prior to the Oct. 18 meeting of the state Board of Mental
Health, spokesman Rosemary Brown said.

Scientologists Clash With Anti-Cult Group In Lawsuits
October 10, 1992, Tony Rogers, Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) _ Scientologists, long a target of deprogrammers, have gone
to court to try to turn the tables, claiming they were illegally barred
from joining an anti- cult group.

In a flurry of lawsuits filed around the nation, dozens of members of
the Church of Scientology said they tried to join the Cult Awareness
Network but were rejected because of their church affiliation.

Many of the lawsuits were filed last week after a federal grand jury
indicted three alleged members of the Cult Awareness Network on charges
they conspired to abduct and deprogram an heir to the Du Pont chemical
fortune.

She's put her heart in Hart Hotel project
October 10, 2005, Jim Richmond, Battle Creek Enquirer
http://archive.battlecreekenquirer.com/article/20051010/LIFESTYLE08/510100311/She-s-put-her-heart-Hart-Hotel-project

For Maria Guy, renovation of the old Hart Hotel at Washington Avenue
and West Van Buren Street has meant "10-to 12-hour workdays" since the
Church of Scientology bought the building, gutted it and started
turning it into a church facility in 2002.

Guy, a petite woman and native of the Dominican Republic who moved to
America in 1979, said she and a co-worker just finished installing 123
new windows in the building. The windows cost the church about $750,000.

Guy also helped remove asbestos, put down tar roofing in the hot summer
heat, cleaned up mountains of trash and done anything asked to move the
estimated $2 million project toward completion in 2006 or 2007.

Questions About 'Sweat Lodge' Rite Where 2 Died
October 10, 2009, Johm Dougherty, New York Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/11/us/11lodge.html?_r=1

The people, some of whom paid more than $9,000, were taking part in a
program called "Spiritual Warrior, " which was being run by the
self-help expert James Arthur Ray. They had been inside the lodge for
more than two hours when emergency calls were made about 5 p.m. Friday,
the Verde Valley Fire Department said.

Questions have also arisen about the length of time the people were in
the lodge - about two hours. A ceremony usually lasts no more than an
hour, Mr. Bruchac said.

"Return to Route Out Properly"
October 10, 2010, Jefferson Hawkins, Leaving Scientology
https://leavingscientology.wordpress.com/2010/10/10/%e2%80%9creturn-to-route-out-properly%e2%80%9d/

I've posted before that the Church's insistence that Ex-Sea Org Members
"return to route out properly" is a trap. The latest evidence of this
is the story of Daniel Montalvo posted on Marty's blog, and
subsequently reported by the Village Voice, LA Weekly and Time Newsfeed.

You can read the whole story at any one of these links. Basically,
Daniel blew from Bridge Publications, taking with him several hard
drives containing his music and some work files from Bridge. Marty and
others advised him to return them right away, which he did, via
messenger service.

He then went to Florida to join Tom Devocht, who had offered to house
him and find him a job. There, he faced pressure from Scientologists,
including his own family, to return and "route out properly."
Eventually, he called in to talk to his mother, but instead was put
through to Scientology lawyer Kendrick Moxon, who threatened him with
arrest for theft unless he returned and "routed out properly."

Madness from Coast to Coast - the Mosquitoes
October 10, 2010, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
http://www.mikerindersblog.org/madness-from-coast-to-coast-the-mosquitoes/

Well, 36 hours after Daniel's departure from Tiziano and Jamie's, six
full time PIs still have the place under surveillance. $30,000 to
$50,000 spent per day, conservative estimate, in an attempt to cave in
this couple. Product? $30,000 to $50,000 a day wasted, and their image
as a radical, bullying cult more firmly etched in the public mind.

All the while, Lil' Dave Lebow has been in Clearwater orchestrating
full-time harrassment against Mike Rinder.

Some people have expressed to me the concern that my graphic reporting
of the Radical Scientology Cult PI hijinks might tend to back off
people who would otherwise step forward to help in the cause. That may
be so. But, those who consider backing off ought to know that we are
beginning to expererience a major tipping point that I suggested
several months ago that we might see sooner or later. That is, when
enough people stand up to the bullying rather than do what Miscavige
intends the targets of his harassment to do - that is, shrink and crawl
quietly into darkness - the in terorrem effect will, once and for all,
be lost. Remember, Miscavige has two missiles in his arsenal. One,
intimidation with seemingly unlmited chutzpah and money in order to
wear one down to the attitude of "it is not worth it any more." Two,
when "one" has had its intended effect, use seemingly unlimited funds
to either a) make the legal and PR trouble he has created with this
over-the-top intimidation tactics go away, or b) throw the target a
bone to settle and go away quietly. I also said from the beginning that
breaking the mafia-like monopoly of terror Miscavige runs is inevitable
because we are a new breed of cat. We are immune to both missiles in
his arsenal. We just ain't afraid, and we are not buyable at any price.

In the past year three, if not four, of Miscavige's five closest aides
have left not only his inner circle, not only the International
Scientology Headquarters base, but also have left the Sea Organization.

arbitrary chaos such, was manned as follows:

Why Tom Cruise Can't Quit Scientology
October 10, 2012, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
https://tonyortega.org/2012/10/10/why-tom-cruise-cant-quit-scientology/

There's been some reporting in the tabloid press recently that Tom
Cruise has been behaving a bit strangely while filming a new movie in
London: he's been seen out late at night, and with people who aren't
usually around him. He's seen little of his daughter Suri. He's been
showing up places sometimes completely alone and without his usual
tribe of handlers.

Based on that, plus some anonymous quotes from "insiders," the tabs
have wondered if his recent divorce has caused Tom to split from
Scientology, certainly a juicy notion, since the actor seemed to have
placed his loyalty to church leader David Miscavige above all else,
even his wife and child.

But is Tom really rejecting Miscavige and the church?

Claire Waquet, UNADFI Now it was the turn of Claire Waquet for UNADFI,

David Wilson is Channeling David Miscavige
October 10, 2013, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
http://www.mikerindersblog.org/david-wilson-is-channeling-david-miscavige/

Some people speak to God. Some talk to Jesus.

David Wilson communes with David Miscavige to provide his inspiration.

He is so in tune with Dear Leader, he can tell what he is thinking just
by looking at him while he is soaking up the applause after telling
everyone he hasnt quite figured out when GAG II is going to be released
- because he personally has to write 50 programs. And in the 15 years
the building has been "under construction" there just wasnt time to
write some programs. And he just brought all the ED's to Flag and he
didnt have the programs written? But now he has turned another complete
cluster fuck of his own creation into something to be admired as an
amazing feat of personal sacrifice as only He can pull off - He is
Personally going to write the programs. How strange it is to listen to
his lawyers desperately trying to keep him insulated from those he has
harmed assert to the courts that "Mr. Miscavige has no management
function, he is like the Pope" and other complete lies.

Hall v. The Queen - donation to Scientology does not result in tax deduction
in Canada
October 10, 2013, Mark Blumberg, Canadian Charity Law
http://www.canadiancharitylaw.ca/index.php/blog/comments/hall_v._the_queen_-_donation_to_scientology_does_not_result_in_tax_deductio/

Scientology is not considered a registered charity in Canada. If an
individual donates to Scientology they will not receive an official
donation receipt in Canada. In Hall v. The Queen, Mr. Hall donated
money to the International Association of Scientologists ("IAS") and
argued that the fact that he did not get a tax benefit is a violation
of his Charter rights. Justice Pizzitelli of the Tax Court of Canada
dismissed Mr. Hall's appeal. It is interesting that in the decision it
notes "... IAS is not a registered Charity in Canada nor apparently
even applied to be." Apparently Scientology has in the past tried to
obtain registered charity status but CRA declined their application.

OOPS: Government Shutdown Stalls EEOC Lawsuit Against Miami Scientology

October 10, 2013, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
https://tonyortega.org/2013/10/10/oops-government-shutdown-stalls-eeoc-lawsuit-against-miami-scientology-chiropractor/

File this under the WTF? department: You may remember a story we
published in May about a Miami Chiropractor named Dennis Nobbe (right).
His practice, Dynamic Medical Services, Inc., was sued by the Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission over the complaints of four named
employees who said that Dynamic forced them to take Scientology courses
as part of their jobs.

In fact, Nobbe ran his own Scientology academy, and we heard from past
employees who said that for many years, taking courses at the academy
was a big part of working at the chiropractic business.

We were told by an EEOC attorney that it was unusual for a lawsuit to
be filed, an indication that settlement talks had been fruitless. And
now, we've learned that settlement discussions have broken down again -
but it's those lunatics in Congress that are at fault this time!

Organized Crime and Standing One's Ground
October 10, 2013, Marty Rathbun, Moving On Up a Little Higher
https://markrathbun.wordpress.com/2013/10/10/organized-crime-and-standing-ones-ground/

I have not commented much on Monique Rathbun v. David Miscavige. I
believe the case stands on its own merit.

But since David Miscavige has dictated and issued a public statement in
response to Monique Rathbun v. David Miscavige that centers wholly upon
me, I will briefly respond. The statement calls me a coward for
supporting my wife's effort to be free from Miscavige's organized
domestic terrorism operations.

I have investigated organized crime at all levels. My life has been
threatened while investigating traditional La Cosa Nostra figures on
the east coast, and while investigating local branches of national
street gangs in South Texas. In both cases I stood my ground and lived
to tell the stories. I have studied gang and organized crime activity
and had extensive liaison with experts in the subject, from local law
enforcement, to the Texas Attorney General's Office, to the United
States Department of Justice. I have learned a little something about
the tactics and behaviors of organized crime members.

truth about their drug and convict rehabilitation programs and what
"going clear" really means with former scientologist Tory Christman.
She details Scientology persecution of former members, the
anti-medication and illness position of the church, how it has affected

Monumental Announcement Under The Big Top
October 10, 2014, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It

It is hardly a surprise that there is a lot of hype about the upcoming
IAS "Big Top" circus event. There is hype for every event. And the next
event is always so much better than the last one.

But a few people have reported that there is talk of a "monumental
announcement" similar to the announcement of "Golden Age Of Tech" for
"our 4th dynamic programs."

Now, this could of course just be typical "call-in" patter and the
"monumental announcement" will be a new DVD and booklet "exposing psych
crimes" that is going to be mailed out to "every opinion leader on

Vance Woodward's lawsuit dismissed as judge grants Scientology's anti-SLAPP

https://tonyortega.org/2014/10/10/vance-woodwards-lawsuit-dismissed-as-judge-grants-scientologys-anti-slapp-motion/

Woodward filed his lawsuit in March, saying that he had been harmed by
his years in Scientology and asked for money back that he gave for
services that he would never have use for after leaving the church. If
you recall, we reported in June that Scientology filed a motion to
compel Woodward to dismiss the suit and submit his grievances to
Scientology's internal arbitration procedures instead.

Scientology's attorneys also filed another motion, which they asked to
be heard after the arbitration matter, which amounted to an anti-SLAPP.
At the time, we noted that it was a back-up plan, and we didn't expect
it to become an issue yet.

However, on September 29, Scientology switched strategies, and asked to
hold off on the motion to compel arbitration and hear the anti-SLAPP
motion first. Judge Johnson then granted the motion, and we have a copy
of his order.

Another minor omen of the coming Scientology apocalypse appears in Florida

About a month ago, our Florida correspondent "L. Wrong" spotted an
interesting sight. Outside of the Hubbard Dianetics Foundation in
Orlando, a "For Rent" sign had sprung up.

We're actually surprised that more Scientology outlets haven't gone
belly-up, considering the sharp drop in activity at them around the
world. But here was some visual evidence that the Orlando outlet had
fallen on some hard times.

A week ago, LW tells us, the For Rent sign suddenly disappeared.

Scientology Homophobia
October 10, 2015, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
http://www.mikerindersblog.org/scientology-homophobia/

Is scientology homophobic?

There has been considerable discussion about this. In today's world,
where it is no longer socially acceptable to be anti-gay, scientology
has taken steps to attempt to portray itself as tolerant and welcoming
of the LGBT community. But similar to scientology's claims that
disconnection "doesn't exist" or is simply a "personal choice," the PR
smokescreen hides an ugly and unpleasant reality.

At its heart, scientology IS very homophobic.

You can be certain that the level of hype and bs at the annual IAS
Celebration at St Hill this weekend was unparalleled, epic and milestone.

If these new promotional items are any indication, the brazen lies are
becoming so astounding that it is hard to imagine anyone actually
buying them?

Seriously, they actually believe that handing out WTH (with NO
information even about how many were handed out or what percentage of
the population they reached or whether anyone even read it) has made
Amsterdam the "5th safest city on earth" (wonder where they get that
supposed statistic from??).

One of Scientology's new Narconons got inspected - and turned up one
surprising result

On September 5 last year, the Church of Scientology opened a Narconon
drug rehab center in a country that it had forsaken several years
earlier. Narconon United Kingdom was formally opened on that day at its
East Sussex location with the usual fanfare - a fancy backdrop, some
confetti, and a few speeches.

The decision to open a Narconon center in England after closing a
previous facility there was part of Scientology leader David
Miscavige's grand new strategy about the rehab network. For several
years, we've been documenting how Narconon has had to adapt to a new
reality after several patient deaths in the U.S. resulted in heightened
press and government interest, as well as dozens of lawsuits around the
country.

For decades, Narconon had been a reliable moneymaker for Scientology,
and had managed to avoid much controversy, in part because Narconon
tried to keep its connection to Scientology somewhat murky. But
investigations, particularly after three patient deaths in Oklahoma in
2011-2012, produced documents making it crystal clear that Narconon was
part of Miscavige's plans for Scientology "expansion."

Here's how Scientology tried to keep you from seeing tonight's episode of
'Leah Remini'

"My uncle told me that if I were to allow the episode to air, I would
personally be responsible for millions of deaths. He said the people
who watch it will walk right into the hands of the psychs," Tara Reile
told us yesterday.

Tara appears in tonight's episode of A&E's Leah Remini: Scientology and
the Aftermath, and we called her up after we had a chance to view the
episode ourselves. It's a frightening hour of television about what
Tara and another child of Scientologists, Nathan Rich, went through as
teenagers at Scientologist-run ranches in California and New Mexico. If
you saw last night's preview, or if you've seen some of the promotional
spots online, you know it's going to be a harrowing experience hearing
these stories tonight.

But Tara wanted us to know about what she's been through just in the
last couple of weeks as Scientology tried to put the full-court press
on her to convince A&E not to show the episode. The church really,
really does not want you to watch this episode tonight.

The Aftermath Is Back
October 10, 2017, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
http://www.mikerindersblog.org/the-aftermath-is-back/

Tonight, the Aftermath is back with a new episode.

I am on a short vacation with friends - including the Headley's and
Smith-Levin's and our combined 8 children (only one of whom is visible
in this shot, our son Jack, but three others are taking this shot, one
with camera and two holding "camera lights" directed by Marc Headley).

We will all be tweeting tonight. Unfortunately, we are in the Central
Time Zone so will be an hour behind the East Coast to watch it on TV
but will tweet live starting at 9 EST.
