Classes for defendants have ties to church
February 2, 1997, Craig Pittman, St. Petersburg Times
http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/sptimes/access/16998459.html?FMT=FT&dids=16998459:16998459&FMTS=ABS:FT

"I was assured it was secular," Rushing said. "I was assured it doesn't
teach religion and it wasn't a Church of Scientology publication."

The course is run by an organization called Criminon, which a recent
issue of the Scientology publication Freedom defined as an "independent
and non-religious" organization that is "strongly supported by the
Church of Scientology" - another fact Eggleston said nobody mentioned,
either in court or in class.

Outside critics are unacceptable
February 2, 2005, Mark Sommer, Buffalo News
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/JeremyPerkins/Articles/buffalo-news-2005-02-02.html

But what happened to Durni that day wasn't unusual.

Family members and friends of Scientologists - including parents,
spouses and children - who are critical of the church can be declared
"suppressive." That means the church sees them as intent on harming or
destroying Scientology.

Under strict directives set by Scientology's late founder, L. Ron
Hubbard, church members must persuade them to check their criticism -
or sever all contact.

Critics say they have witnessed that scenario happen repeatedly with
Scientology.

Scientology tests' purpose and validity are questioned
February 2, 2005, Mark Sommer, Buffalo News

Stop at a kiosk in the mall, or flip through a publication, and you
might run across a free "personality test."

The test has long been a main recruitment tool for the Church of
Scientology.

New life for a landmark
February 2, 2008, Murray McNeill, Winnipeg Free Press
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/subscriber/business/local/story/4118938p-4713802c.html

The Church of Scientology plans to spend up to $10 million to convert a
landmark building in the Exchange District into a church and community
outreach centre.

Rev. Yvette Shank, president of the church's Canadian office in
Toronto, said the church plans to undertake a major refurbishing of the
115-year-old Peck Building, which it quietly acquired last March for a
previously unheard of price for the Exchange of $2.2 million.

The 89-minute film tells the story of a man who stumbles into

also includes a trip to a sort of disciplinary camp which is part of
the organization's European headquarters, as well as the man's wife's
sudden disappearance to a center in Florida and his daughter being sent

John Travolta benefit will help Hubbard wellness program
February 2, 2010, Dave Schlenker, Gainesville

The Ocala Detoxification Project is designed to help firefighters and
other uniformed personnel who are exposed to toxins. It likely will
launch with funds from the gala. "From Paris" star John Travolta is
leading the local effort. Detoxification is based on a book by Church
of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. It is not, advocates stress, a
Scientology program.

Its critics contend detoxification is unproven and lacks necessary
medical research.

Scientologists in Haiti: A Firsthand Account
February 2, 2010, Ravi Somaiya, Gawker
http://gawker.com/5462117/scientologists-in-haiti-a-firsthand-account

I asked another guy what he'd packed and he said he hadn't bothered to
bring soap or toilet paper or food, but that he'd just "buy whatever I
need at Port-au-Prince airport." I couldn't break it to him.

They had no place to stay, and no supplies - their idea was to use the
ton of money they had to buy food to distribute when they got there.
But there was no food and no water. That was the point.

By the time we arrived in Haiti, after a stopover in Miami, we had
missed three landing slots at the airport. Aid agencies - genuine aid
agencies - from other countries were being turned away, refused
permission to land. But we still got a slot straight away. The guy who
ran our charter seemed to think that the Scientologists had some real
influence with the US Government, who were assigning the slots.

"Beyond The Pale Of What A Human Being Should Endure"

That is how Debbie Cook and Wayne Baumgarten's attorney characterizes
what Debbie was put through by Scientology Inc.

Tony Ortega at the Village Voice published the first interview with the
Baumgarten's San Antonio litigation attorney Ray Jeffrey. As I think
you will see from the article, Ray has the right attitude going into
what may be the biggest legal war of his long career.

Ray has bent over backward to stretch his firm's pricing standards to
make his quality, aggressive representation available to Debbie and
Wayne. And while their defense will likely continue to cost 1/2oth of
what Miscavige's Death Star is pouring into this unprecedented assault
on constitutional and human rights, Debbie and Wayne are going to need
a huge support base to wage this battle with the beast toe to toe.

French court to rule on Scientology appeal
February 2, 2012, ANP/AFP, Radio Netherlands
http://www.rnw.nl/english/bulletin/french-court-rule-scientology-appeal

A Paris court is to rule Thursday in an appeal against a fine of
hundreds of thousands of euros imposed on the Church of Scientology
after it was found guilty of fleecing vulnerable followers.

A 2009 fraud conviction saw Scientology's Celebrity Centre and its
bookshop in Paris, the two branches of its French operations, ordered
to pay 600,000 euros ($790,000) in fines for preying financially on
several followers in the 1990s.

Scientology in France: Still Guilty of Fraud
February 2, 2012, Tony Ortega, Runnin' Scared, Village Voice
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2012/02/scientology_in_4.php

French Scientologists had held protests outside the appeals court in
Paris Big news this morning out of a French appeals court, where a
decision was handed down regarding Scientology's 2009 conviction for
fraud.

Scientology watchers around the world have been keeping an eye on the
proceedings, which were wild and woolly: in November, Scientology's
entire contingent of attorneys and defendants stormed out of the
courtroom, complaining about how the case was proceeding.

Well, now they have even more to be steamed about. At about 4 am our
time this morning, the Court of Appeal in Paris upheld the 2009
convictions of two Scientology organizations and five individuals, as
well as about $800,000 in fines.

The Appeal Court Judgment

The Court of Appeal in Paris confirmed the convictions of the two
Scientology organisations for organised fraud, a decision which some
say is the beginning of the end for the movement.

On Thursday, February 2, the Court of Appeal in Paris confirmed the
conviction of two Scientology organisations for organised fraud.

It also upheld convictions for organised fraud and charges relating to
the illegal practice of pharmacy against five Scientologists,
increasing the sentences against two of the appellants. (A sixth
person, who failed to turn up for the appeal trial and was not legally
represented, had her original conviction confirmed by default.)

Entrapment
February 2, 2013, Marty Rathbun, Moving On Up a Little Higher
https://markrathbun.wordpress.com/2013/02/02/entrapment/

Today, while reading the transcript of an L. Ron Hubbard lectured
titled Dealing With Attacks On Scientology, 26 June 1961, a particular
authoritatively spoken datum caught my attention. LRH was
distinguishing Scientology from other spiritual and religious
philosophies over the years that had become entrapments to one degree
or another. He said:

So these former efforts were entrapments, and this is not an entrapment.
It is not even a total freedom. I've even told you occasionally total
freedom would be existence without barriers, and I think you would find
everybody very miserable. All right. We're an incomprehensible factor.
This is the first time, actually, a high-powered, rather selfless
philosophy has hit Earth which didn't at once demand of its
practitioner or in ? the person who embraces it ? that he totally
subjugate himself utterly and become enslaved by the philosophy, don't
you see; and which didn't say that the originator of the philosophy
must then be carried as an imperishable valence from there on to the
end of the track, and everybody should bow down to this, don't you see.
That alone is incomprehensible amongst the ? the works of man. These
are different. These are different.

I would like to hear your views about this. Did Scientology go astray
from this unique position and join the ranks of entrapments? If so,
when, how, why?

Scientology Mythbusting with Jon Atack: The Tomato Photo!
February 2, 2013, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
http://tonyortega.org/2013/02/02/scientology-mythbusting-with-jon-atack-the-tomato-photo/

We're starting a new weekly feature today, and we're very excited about
it. In 1990, author Jon Atack published what is still one of the very
best books on L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology, A Piece of Blue Sky.
Atack now has a new edition of the book coming out, and it reminded us
what an encyclopedic resource he is. So we had an idea. In the world of
Scientology watching, we noticed that there seem to be some legends,
myths, and contested facts that tend to get hashed and rehashed in
books, articles, and especially on the Internet. With Atack's help,
we're going to tackle these issues one by one, drawing on Jon's deep
knowledge and (who knew?) droll sense of humor.

This week, let's start out with one of the most iconic photographs of L.
Ron Hubbard and settle some facts about its background. Get your
alligator clamps ready - it's time to torture a tomato!

If you've spent any time learning about Scientology, you've no doubt
run into some version of this image...

London Calling
February 2, 2014, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
http://www.mikerindersblog.org/london-calling/

This is a report sent in from a Special Correspondent that was
originally in response to an earlier posting about the New Years video.
It deserves its own posting as by the time we ironed out the
difficulties getting the shots, there was a new posting up and this
would have been lost. A lot of specifics about the state of this "Ideal
Org" confirm everything else that is being reported about orgs around
the world. Remember, this is the org that is so heavily hyped in the
"We Are Clearing The UK" idiocy that routinely emanates from inside the
bubble. This is also an org that cost 10 million POUNDS to purchase,
let alone renovate to the opulent standards of Dear Leader. Not one
thin dime of that investment has been returned in terms of increased
production.

Thanks for posting this summary and link Mike. As I was neither willing
or able to stomach any more than I absolutely needed to, I skipped
straight to the items closer to home and saved myself from the
restimulation of bygone events and from the further agony of listening
to our great tongue being relentlessly cannibalised. You have my
eternal admiration for actually sitting through this stuff, especially
when, these days, you really don't have to! (As an aside, I've always
wondered about/pitied the poor souls who have to translate this garbage
into something intelligible for their respective non-English-speaking
audiences. How long does that actually take? The mind boggles with the
potential linguistic gymnastics involved. What side checks are in place
for final approval? And can any suicides be traced back to here? It's
truly enough to make one shudder.)

My primary interest was the segment on London, but before I give you my
2 cents worth, here's the current state of London Org at Queen Victoria
Street and the LI/Test Centre at Tottenham Court Road (with some
comparisons to yesteryear where known).

Scientology's drug rehab facility in Nevada sued over the usual litany of

http://tonyortega.org/2014/02/02/scientologys-drug-rehab-facility-in-nevada-sued-over-the-usual-litany-of-deceptions/

Last year, as Scientology's drug rehab network, Narconon, was sinking
deeper and deeper into trouble, we noticed that an attorney in Las
Vegas, Ryan Hamilton, had begun advertising online for Narconon victims.
It was another sign of just how bad things were getting for
Scientology's rehab facilities, which were being sued and investigated
in several states.

Well, Hamilton's ad apparently paid off, because this week he filed a
federal lawsuit against Scientology's Narconon facility in Nevada, and
the lawsuit's complaint is one of the best written and most thorough
that we've ever read.

The Horrifying Real Secret of Scientology
February 2, 2015, Jeffrey Augustine, Scientology Money Project

The horrifying real secret of Scientology is not about Xenu or volcanoes.

What the Church of Scientology does not want the public to know is its
biggest secret: Scientologists consider that they are Homo Novis, a new

The real secret about Scientology is its Master Race agenda that seeks
nothing less than world conquest via ethnic cleansing and taking over
the political, legal, educational, and mental health systems of the
world.

He went into the basement of the house, which had a ground floor entry,

a woman sitting on the stairs.

We're going to call this woman Candace. She was with her caregiver, a

The particularly bad timing of Monique Rathbun's decision to fire her
attorneys
February 2, 2016, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
http://tonyortega.org/2016/02/02/the-particularly-bad-timing-of-monique-rathbuns-decision-to-fire-her-attorneys/

We wanted to follow up yesterday's blockbuster news with some important
details. Namely, where Monique Rathbun's lawsuit against the Church of
Scientology is today, and what immediate deadlines it faces.

On Friday, Monique's attorneys filed a document with the Texas Supreme
Court which revealed that they had been fired "without cause." In the
filing there was no notice of new counsel representing Monique. There
was no request for a stay of proceedings so that new attorneys could be
brought on and learn the case. Assuming the court accepts the
withdrawal of her attorneys, Monique is currently without counsel of
any kind. One of the consequences of this is that the home address of
the Rathbuns was included in the document - if Monique still had
representation, we might not even know that the Rathbuns had returned
to Ingleside, near Corpus Christi.

In our comments, we saw numerous people suggesting that Monique might
simply be switching attorneys. While that's possible, our experts tell
us it's not likely. Ray Jeffrey and the others, Marc Wiegand, Elliott
Cappuccio, and Leslie Hyman, were working on a contingency basis, and
had racked up a huge amount of work in the time since the lawsuit was
first filed in August 2013. Because they were fired "without cause,"
they would still be entitled to their percentage of any future
settlement in the case, which we believe would be around 40 to 45
percent.

The Scientology Experience: Shane Weightman (Part 2)
February 2, 2016, Chris Shelton, Critical Thinker at Large
http://mncriticalthinking.com/2016/02/02/the-scientology-experience-shane-weightman-part-2/

This is the second part of my interview with former Scientologist Shane
Weightman.

We start this part by going back over a few details of Shane's early
life in Paris and the difficulty of the situation his family was in.
The financial and familial hardships they had to endure were not due to
the fact that Shane's parents were monsters or abusive but simply
because Scientology used them as much as it could by convincing them
that there was nothing more important than Scientology. This is all too
common in destructive cults, where parents are put in an impossible
situation of thinking they are "saving the planet" while their own
children barely see them. Such was the case in Shane's family and it
made it hard on him and his siblings.

Shane's upbringing in Scientology put him in a frame of mind, like
almost anyone raised with any kind of rigid belief system, that his
beliefs and ideas were the normal ones and everyone else had it wrong.
There's nothing unusual or strange in parents bringing up their kids
that way, even if it's not really what I would say is optimum. Growing
up with the idea that "critical thinking" is a bad thing is no way to
raise anyone.
