Employee Accuses Real Estate Firm Of Turning on Scientology E-Meter

According to Ms. Schwartz's E.E.O.C. complaint, Mr. Feldman's advocacy
didn't stop with mandatory night classes. In 1993, she alleges, Mr.
Feldman scheduled mandatory five-hour Scientology seminars at the
office. In some seminars, Mr. Schwartz said, she was forced to read
church literature and demonstrate what she had learned by using clay
figures and other props: "People would be rolling their eyes while they
were doing this, and the teacher would go, 'Ooh, very good,'" she said.

Mr. Feldman's alleged activities provoked a strong response from Diana
Featherstone, a former vice president of administration for Mr. Feldman.
In an affidavit filed with Ms. Schwartz's complaint, Ms. Featherstone
said she told Mr. Feldman that the church's management training was
"very religious and cultlike in nature." She says she was disturbed
enough to resist an order to write a memorandum saying that the courses
were mandatory.

According to Ms. Featherstone, Mr. Feldman went into a rage and wrote
the memo himself. Ms. Featherstone said she began looking for another
job, only to be fired when another employee discovered her r?sum? in
the computer system. According to Ms. Featherstone, the employee was an
enthusiastic promoter of the mandatory Scientology classes and soon
after became vice president for administration.

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- A phony news release is circulating
promoting a lecture by actor Tom Cruise on the evils of psychiatry at
the Los Angeles Scientology Celebrity Center.

The release issued Tuesday says Cruise would discuss "How Psychiatry
Invented Schizophrenia" and "Handling Sexual Dis-Orientation," People
magazine reported Wednesday.

Cruise's attorney, Bert Fields, told Radar Online the release is
"totally phony" and added, "Tom is not giving any lectures."

Scientologists given accused's psychiatric file

THE Church of Scientology has been granted access to a confidential
psychiatric report tendered as evidence in the trial of a Sydney woman
accused of murdering her family earlier this year.

The 25-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was diagnosed
with a psychotic illness last year but allegedly discouraged by her
parents from taking her prescribed medication because of their
Scientology beliefs.

The report, by psychiatrist Mark Cross, who examined the woman after
her arrest, said her parents allowed her to resume the medication
shortly before the attack, in which her father and sister were stabbed
to death.

"She had a history of being diagnosed with a psychotic illness in late
2006 at Bankstown Hospital, but follow-up from the mental health team
was apparently denied by her parents because of their alleged
Scientology beliefs," the report says.

The Australian Church of Scientology applied for and was granted access
to the report by Burwood Local Court, where the woman is on trial,
although reporters were subsequently told the document would not be
publicly released.

Cyrus Brooks, community relations officer for the church, said it had
sought access to the document after media coverage linking Scientology
to the alleged murders, although access was granted on condition that
the church not release the report to the media.

Despite this, Mr Brooks has emailed excerpts from the report to
journalists to "correct" their reporting of the case.

BBC Panorama - The Secrets of Scientology

Well, that is the title in any event. In fact, the secrets they
promised to tell never made it into the final edit. You can thank David
Miscavige if you got the overall impression Scientology itself is weird.
The fifty letters from the Church and its lawyers to the BBC that the
church brags about in its counter video promised litigation should
those secrets be told . In other words, spend parishioner donations to
cover Dave's ass exclusively, forcing the media to fill in with old
hat, more generalized attack material. Protect Miscavige at the expense
of Scientology.

The show does give credible accounts from Mike, Amy, Marc, Claire,
Jason, Mareka, et al on matters the world ought to know. But, the
secrets that were touted and would have had the most salutory effects
were left on the editing room floor.

In that respect, I admit I was wrong. I earlier suggested the BBC would
be less inclined to back off as I had accused U.S. media of doing
(since the BBC is publicly funded). At the end of the day, I remain
confident that the 'save Dave at any expense' strategy will be his own
undoing.

Fed judge to state judge: Butt out of Scientology case

Thomas Brennan in a wrongful death suit against the church.

movement at our choice for the top person in this list, the church's

himself, Lafayette Ronald Hubbard.

How, we've been asked, could a man who's been dead for 25 years be
crippling the movement he left behind, as in the present tense? Wasn't
it Hubbard's prolific output, his charisma, and his shrewd instinct
that turned a brief self-help fad in the summer of 1950 into a
decades-strong globe-spanning religious organization? And even if the
church has fallen on hard times in recent years, isn't the new
independence movement rescuing Hubbard from it, getting back to his
first principles, which have nothing to do with the corruption of
official Scientology under its current leader, David Miscavige?

Allow me to call bullshit.

One of Miscavige's more infamous Scientology-crippling blunders was his
unwelcome intervention into the life of Lisa McPherson, which
ultimately led to her death. As detailed in Janet Reitman's excellent
book, Inside Scientology, corroborated accounts told of Miscavige
arriving in Clearwater, Florida and voicing his frustration at the
members moving "up the bridge" too slowly. He then took a personal
interest in Lisa, supervising her auditing sessions and declaring her
"Clear" despite the misgivings of, well, actual auditors. And Miscavige
continued to be advised, from afar, of Lisa's supposed "care," all the
way to her death. Although Miscavige's direct involvement would not
fully emerge for years, his direct role in Scientology's single worst
public relations disaster ranks high as a cause for Scientology's
deterioration.

Johnny v. Luka: Who's nuttier? We were intrigued when we learned that
several years ago, Canadian murder-dismemberment suspect Luka Magnotta
had professed to be a Scientologist, and wrote in a blog post, "I
wished every night that Tom Cruise would adopt me."

As far as we could tell, however, Magnotta's actual involvement with
Scientology was either exceedingly tenuous or nonexistent.

That isn't the case with Johnny Lewis. The Sons of Anarchy actor was a
second-generation Scientologist, the child of prominent church members
of the highest order (they're OT8's), and he also had extensive
involvement with Scientology's troubled drug rehab program, Narconon.

encountering his life-draining organizations. Forrest Crane has
provided me with photographs that graphically demonstrate the senseless

The gentleman in the photos in this post, Brad Mothershead, is a
Purification Rundown completion and is mid Objectives. In the year
since he made contact with the Anchorage Mission of Scientology, he has
received the stacks of promotion he is posing with in the mail from
Scientology Inc. He has been bombarded by unwanted, slick advertisting
nearly daily.

Unfortunately, Brad is but one of hundreds of thousands who receive
this onslaught day in and day out.

Scientology links to Katy Perry's dead ex Johnny Lewis

he reportedly spoke at back in 2004.

The website reports that Lewis' mother used the principles of the
program to keep him off drugs.

Talking About The Master on Public Radio

Jim Fleming asked great questions as we were interviewed at public
radio studios in midtown last week. The program is "To the Best of our
Knowledge," out of Wisconsin Public Radio, and we're told it will go
out on the PRI network to stations around the country.

Earlier, we'd talked with John Hockenberry for WNYC's national program
"The Takeaway," and we were on with our colleague Scott Foundas on
KCRW's program "To the Point." But this latest piece for Fleming is our
favorite.

The interview was part of a multi-part show called "What We Believe,"
and it featured a great talk with Hugh Urban, the Ohio State professor
who has done such good work on the history of Scientology, and an
interview with Marc Headley on his time working at the Int Base and
being audited by Tom Cruise (and talking with ashtrays!).

Jon, for a few weeks now we've been bugging you about L. Ron Hubbard's
interest in Sex Magick and Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), which predated
his work on Dianetics and Scientology. We know you covered it in depth
in A Piece of Blue Sky, as have other writers, such as Lawrence Wright
in Going Clear. But we have a reason for bringing it up, and we thought
you might ease us into the subject again.

JON: When I first went to Saint Hill in the mid-70s, I was befriended
by a Crowleyite named Carlos. He told me that Hubbard had set up
Scientology as a beacon for the "mages" - of whom, he assured me, I was
one. The vast majority of recruits would simply be drones, who would do
our bidding at some future date. I believe Carlos went back to heroin
addiction, in preference to the state of OT. We only met twice, but it
made me watchful. I had no interest in magic (or heroin, for that
matter, contrary to OSA rumors).

After more than THIRTY YEARS, they STILL aren't close to their target
of 10,000 onto (or through) OT VII.

And believe me, this "6300" INCLUDES anyone on or through OT VII that
is READING THIS BLOG. Also everyone who has dropped their body. Or who
is a "Black Tag" (ie "off the level"). This 6300 also includes all Sea
Org members who have made it through OT VI by some miracle (though in
30 years, if anyone cared, every SO member on earth could have been
gotten up to OT VII and according to the PR statements of the church
there are more than 5000 Sea Org members).

Of course, nobody in the bubble sees the contradiction - "straight up
and vertical expansion" never equates to any real stats and this is one
of the few that have ever been made public. Neither has 10 years of
"Ideal Orgs" "Clearing the Planet" hasn't changed the number on OT VII.

(2007-2012) or even before that, at New Times LA (1999-2002; Tory
Christman and Mark Ebner and Mark Bunker, among others) or even a few
of you who stretch all the way back to the Phoenix New Times
(1995-1999; Rick Ross and Jeff Jacobsen, for example) - we humbly thank
you for putting up with our adventures into the weird world of
Scientology for so long.

15-year-old actress on a soap opera and her agent was pushing her mom
to have the girl declared Legal 18 so she could be 'more competitive'
and not have the restrictions of child labor laws."

At the agent's urging, the mother enrolled her daughter in the Dennison
Academy, paid a $250 fee by credit card, and the following Saturday
took the girl to an office building with a small room filled with other
teens, almost all actors, sitting at old-fashioned school desks. The
mother later told Brown that the "principal" Larry Dennison, gave the
children a simple multiple-choice test and then asked each of them to
write an essay about what they'd done on their summer vacations. The
whole thing took less than an hour. Dennison collected the papers, left
the room and returned a half hour later. "Everybody passed!" Brown said.
"It's crazy."

What a great event the Humanists of Greater Portland put on for us at
Friendly House. It didn't hurt that the weather was perfect and
Portland looked gorgeous. We were thrilled to meet, finally, Jefferson
Hawkins, the former Scientology executive who penned the excellent
memoir, Counterfeit Dreams.

We spoke to a full room, and the organizers told us there were an
additional dozen or so folks in an overflow room. And during the
book-signing, we met more Bunkerites and other folks with fascinating
Scientology stories to tell. One of them was even L. Ron Hubbard's
steward on the yacht Apollo! Wow.

Tony first corresponded with Paulette Cooper, who as a young journalist
in the 1970s wrote the first major critical book about Scientology, The
Scandal of Scientology, when she wrote him a complimentary email about
some of his writing. About the time he left the Voice, he had decided
that Paulette's story, although already told in some fashion in
virtually every major story or book about Scientology, had not been
told in the detail that it deserved.

His talk, entitled "Scientology's Abuses: Then and Now," told his own
story and Paulette's, and compared the methods of abuse through "noisy
investigations" designed to intimidate and quieter, secretive
investigations by private investigators designed to keep tabs on
critics who are considered particularly threatening, including the
daily monitoring of Hubbard's former heir apparent, Pat Broeker, and of
Ron Miscavige, Sr., the father of the head of the Church. Tony also
elaborated a bit on an example of each directed at him?a visit to his
mother by Scientology private investigators that he recounted for the
first time in the Emmy-winning Alex Gibney documentary, "Going Clear"
(noisy investigation), and an apparent attempt to hack his email as
well as the email of ex-Scientology leader Mike Rinder by hackers hired
by private investigator Eric Saldarriaga, who revealed after he was
sentenced to prison earlier this year that one of his clients was the
Church of Scientology. The main difference between Scientology's abuses
of old and those more recently is that Scientology's Guardian Office
used to recruit Scientology staff to engage in dirty tricks, and now
they are more likely to use private investigators, perhaps hired by a
Scientology-owned law firm, for more questionable activities.

Was Mohamed Fahmy a Victim of Stephen Harper's Ideology?

In an odd twist of fate, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi
decided to have a change of heart and "pardon" three Al Jazeera
journalists including Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy. Whether Sisi
was feeling charitable on the eve of the Muslim holiday of Eid-Ul-Adha
or wanted to improve his faltering global reputation before his visit
to the United Nations is unknown.

What is clear, however is that the Canadian government had little to do
with Fahmy's release. Although "sheepish whimpers" -- as lawyer Amal
Clooney characterized the Canadian government's response -- were made
to secure his freedom, the government's lack of action was evident from
the start showcasing the flawed precedence of ideology over humanity.

Given that Fahmy held dual Egyptian-Canadian citizenship (now renounced
as a condition for release), the case is a potential precursor of how
such negligence may become reality for Canadians not worthy of a
concerted diplomatic effort, primarily those considered to be
second-tier Canadians under Bill C-24 or failing to qualify, in Prime
Minister Stephen Harper's lexicon, under the "old stock" variety.
Although the context of Harper's faux pas was about healthcare benefits
for refugees, this type of language exposes a more sinister motivation
that justifies rights for certain Canadians while ignoring the plight
of others.

Frederick County Circuit Judge Scott Rolle ruled Monday that the county

within the next 10 days.

Rolle concluded that the county did not knowingly and willfully violate
the Maryland Public Information Act in responding to the request.

compound in the mountains above Los Angeles, where we believe
Scientology leader David Miscavige stashed away his wife Shelly eleven
years ago. And last week, we got an unprecedented look at the ranch in
San Luis Obispo County where Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard died in

leery of having their names publicly associated with the polarizing
Republican nominee. Ricketts' pitch to these donors focuses on the fact

its second season, we expected the Church of Scientology to increase
its attacks on the show. But what we didn't expect was a sudden charm
offensive.

Is David Miscavige finally starting to learn that playing the creep all
the time isn't going to turn things around? In Clearwater, Florida, Sea
Org members made nice recently as they boarded up local businesses, at
their own expense, in anticipation of Hurricane Irma. Two hundred tons
of building supplies are on their way to Corpus Christi for relief
efforts after Hurricane Harvey. And near Hemet, California,
Scientologists recently invited some members of the public to mingle at
secretive Int Base.

Karen Pressley told us about that last one. And she's got quite the
story about it today. Karen was featured last week in an episode of
Aftermath because of her experience as a celebrity recruiter for the
Church of Scientology, and it coincided with the release of her book,

Mercury Disability Board payment for Grassy Narrows to be indexed to inflation

Residents in Asubpeeschoseewagong Anishinabek, commonly known as Grassy
Narrows First Nation, will soon receive retroactive compensation
through the Mercury Disability Board (MDB) as payments are expected to
be indexed to inflation starting next month.

Leaders in Grassy Narrows released a written statement on Friday saying
that the province is committed to increasing payouts from the
disability board, with the Minister of Indigenous Affairs, Greg
Rickford, visiting the community on Friday to make that announcement.

"This is a step forward in righting one of the many wrongs that have
been done to us," Chief Rudy Turtle of Grassy Narrows stated in
Friday's release.

US Government 'adopts' Russian Scientologist in religious rights protest

On June 5, 2017, agents of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB)
made one of numerous raids it has carried out on Scientology facilities.
This one took place at the St. Petersburg org, and it resulted in the
arrest of five Scientologists who were working there.

One of them was a man named Ivan Matsitsky, whom Russian press accounts
have described as the org's "leader," which is not a Scientology title.
(Scientology's own website doesn't list a title for Matsitsky, but says
he's been involved in Scientology since 1994.)

More than a year later, Matsitsky and the org's chief accountant, Sahib
Aliyev, are still in pre-trial custody, while the other three,
including the org's 64-year-old executive director, Galina Shurinova,
were allowed to go home on house arrest.

For those of us who get smeared by Scientology on a regular basis,
there's always a decision to make: Speak up about Scientology's lies
and risk bringing more attention to their scummy online attacks, or
ignore them and assume that intelligent people who run into that
material on their own can recognize the juvenile namecalling and
histrionic exaggeration for what it is.

For the most part, we try not to breathe life into Scientology's sordid
attacks by linking to them or even discussing them. When the church
came out with a new video attacking a well-known former Scientologist
last year, for example, we asked him if he wanted to respond and he
said he didn't plan on even watching the video. We completely understood.

But we also understand when a target of Scientology's dirty tricks
wants to speak up. And when Phil Jones let us know that he'd decided to
respond to an attack on him made by Scientology's fake grass-roots
organization, the STAND League, we told him we'd be happy to post it
for you to see.

EDMONTON ? Andrew Scheer's policy offerings to this point have been
modest, with much to be modest about ? a tax credit here, a tax cut
there, with the hope that the cumulative package persuades voters they
will be better off under a Conservative government.

Not for him the sweeping schemes and bold visions put forward by Justin
Trudeau, whose absolute belief in the omni-competence of government to
deliver encourages him to dream big dreams ? often with unintended and
underwhelming consequences.

Yet in the heart of Alberta's oilpatch, Scheer showed he too is capable
of ambitious, unattainable grand designs ? in this case, the chimera of
a pan-Canadian energy corridor. Flanked by energy workers in the yard
of an oil services company, Scheer conjured up Macdonald's Canadian
Pacific Railroad, St. Laurent's St. Lawrence Seaway and Diefenbaker's
all-weather road to the north as examples of "leaders who could see
what could be, to create a country of possibility and opportunity".

EDMONTON -- Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer was in Edmonton on
Saturday touting a new "corridor" that would move energy and resources
across Canada.

Speaking at FourQuest Energy alongside Alberta Premier Jason Kenney,
Scheer said the new passageway would move not just oil, but also
natural gas, hydroelectricity, and telecommunications with the goal to
"generate economic and social benefits for the entire country," as
stated in the party's press release.

He promised the Conservatives, if elected, would appoint a taskforce to
consult interest groups and recommend how to move forward with the plan
within six months of their mandate.

look at the white nationalist party's registration filings after the
Toronto Star building was falsely listed as the party's "national
headquarters."

The CNP says its top priority is to "maintain the demographic status"
of Canada's "European-descended majority."
