BU's Scientology Connection - Dan Kennedy's Response
May 3, 1996, Dan Kennedy, Boston Phoenix
http://bostonphoenix.com/alt1/archive/specials/scientology/RESPONSE.html

It is simply untrue to state that I did not bother to contact a Church
of Scientology representative. I conducted a one-and-a-half-hour
interview with Earle Cooley, a leading lawyer for the church -- and,
based on his past statements, a member.

BU's Scientology Connection - Scientology's Response
May 3, 1996, Beth Akiyama, Letter, Boston Phoenix
http://bostonphoenix.com/alt1/archive/specials/scientology/LETTER.html

In "BU's Scientology Connection" (News, April 19), Dan Kennedy tried to
make an issue out of Scientology by questioning whether Mr. Earle
Cooley, an attorney who has represented the Church of Scientology and
is also a Boston University trustee, is a Scientologist. Next, Kennedy
will be inquiring whether the president of IBM is a Catholic or
demanding how many New York judges are Muslims.

A wrongful death lawsuit against the Church of Scientology probably
won't be dismissed because of recent allegations of legal misconduct, a
judge indicated Thursday.

Scientology's upgrades to boost taxes in Pinellas
May 3, 2008, Robert Farley, St. Petersburg Times
http://www.tampabay.com/news/growth/article485937.ece

In all, Scientology says it will spend $120-million over the next 15
months adding guest rooms and also completing -- finally -- its Flag
Mecca Building, often called the Super Power center, which has sat
unfinished and vacant for five years.

The construction surge is sure to increase Scientology's already
distinct Clearwater campus. It also will increase something less
obvious -- the church's property tax bill.

Scientology is Staking Everything On Portland Like It Actually Matters
May 3, 2013, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker

Former Scientology spokesman Mike Rinder has been using his blog to
document just how desperate the church is getting as it pursues its
"Ideal Org" strategy.

Church leader David Miscavige seems more determined than ever to raise
money from church members in order to purchase and renovate downtown
landmarks in cities around the world, even though they seem unneeded
and then go largely empty. (Rinder documented just how empty in a
remarkable story about one of the first Ideal Orgs, in Johannesburg.)

Years of effort goes into the fundraising and rehabbing of these
buildings, and everything about these efforts suggest that Miscavige
seems to believe that their grand opening ceremonies present huge
public relations opportunities for Scientology, which has, in the last
year, been suffering through the worst publicity of its existence.

Ken Dandar gets another day in court after his $1 million Scientology judgment
May 3, 2014, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
http://tonyortega.org/2014/05/03/ken-dandar-gets-another-day-in-court-after-his-1-million-scientology-judgment/

Please make sure you saw last night's big news about the Garcia
lawsuit; another judge has denied a Scientology motion in a major
lawsuit. Now, on to today's news...

One of our legal helpers noticed that Florida attorney Ken Dandar - who
was recently hit by Scientology with a $1 million state court judgment
in a bizarre legal case - has a hearing set in his federal lawsuit
which he's hoping will put the kibosh on the state court result.
Confusing? You bet.

Anyway, the docket in his federal case indicates that he'll get a
chance before Judge Virginia M. Hernandez Covington on May 19 at 10 am
in Tampa Courtroom 14B. The parties, notes the docket, should be ready
to talk about "the potential applicability of Younger abstention in
light of the final judgment recently entered in the relevant state
court proceedings - as well as any potential mootness issues."
(Emphasis ours.)

Whale watching: The wealthy donors keeping Scientology afloat, 2015 edition
May 3, 2015, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
http://tonyortega.org/2015/05/03/whale-watching-the-wealthy-donors-keeping-scientology-afloat-2015-edition/

Karen de la Carriere let us know that the new Impact magazine is out,
and this is the one with photographs from the October gala held by the
International Association of Scientologists.

After breaking tradition and holding its 2013 gala in Clearwater,
Florida, the IAS returned this year to its usual place at Saint Hill
Manor in East Grinstead, England, which was formerly the home of
Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

The IAS was started as a special fund in the 1980s when Scientology was
fighting some costly lawsuits. It was seen as a way to build up a
defense fund which, over time, became a slush fund for a myriad of
initiatives the church runs around the world. In 2012, former church
executive Debbie Cook estimated that Miscavige had more than a billion
dollars just in the IAS fund. Scientologists are under intense pressure
to become lifetime members of the IAS ($5,000) and then "up their
status" by giving even larger donations.
