In other court developments: Scientology ruling
April 21, 1987, St. Petersburg Times
http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/sptimes/access/49975493.html?dids=49975493:49975493&FMT=FT

The justices let stand a ruling that could force the Church of
Scientology of California to post a $60-million bond to appeal a
judgment against it.

The court refused to hear arguments in the case brought by the church,
which sought review of a California appeals court ruling.

The Scientology case stems from fraud charges brought against the
church by Larry Wollersheim, a former member.

Scientology has a headquarters in Clearwater.

Local pols cruised in free to Tom gala

Two City Council members who attended Tom Cruise's fund-raiser for a
controversial 9/11 "detoxification project" didn't pay the
$6,250-a-ticket entry fee, but officials said they acted within the
ethics rules.

City Council members Joe Addabbo (D-Queens) and Hiram Monserrate
(D-Queens) both turned up at the glitzy Manhattan affair Thursday night
for the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project, co-founded by
Cruise and linked to Scientology.

Scientologist Following Anonymous to Car Part 1

I needed extra batteries and SD cards, so I left our mini-raid to go to

me to my car, but gets led on a wild goose chase up and down the street

Meet the Scientologist 'squirrel busters': How teams with cameras fixed to
their hats 'stalk' church defectors
April 21, 2011, Richard Hartley-Parkinson, Daily Mail
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1379274/Scientologist-Squirrel-busters-stalk-church-defector.html

From one of the most trusted members of the church he has now become a
thorn in its side.

A group of four men wearing skyblue t-shirts and black caps with the
words 'Squirrel busters productions' turned up at his door and said
they were there to look at his 'PC meters' - a piece of scientology
equipment - and check his 'tack'.

Perhaps most bizarrely about their attire is a picture of a squirrel
with Mr Rathbun's head superimposed onto the image.

Real Water ? with added electrons!
April 21, 2011, Rebecca Hill, The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/science/blog/2011/apr/21/real-water-added-electrons

"Did you know that most of the water you're drinking every day may
actually be damaging your health?"

This is the bold claim made by Nevada-based Affinity Lifestyles.
Fortunately, they have the solution: Real WaterTM with E2 technology.

The Real Water website describes how the water we drink ? from the
water I have in my glass right now, to the water you made your cup of
tea with this morning ? has been "damaged".

In an attempt to blind the reader with science, there are reams of
misplaced claims and pseudo-facts. Take the claim that "many food and
beverages ... are devoid of electrons" ? which would make them an
entirely new state of matter.

Says sect drags out projects
April 21, 2011, Jeff Jacobsen, Letter to Editor, Orangeville Citizen
http://www.citizen.on.ca/news/2011-04-21/Mailbox/Says_sect_drags_out_projects.html

I would like to point out that Scientology has a long history of
dragging out construction programs.

For example, their Super Power building in Clearwater Florida had its
groundbreaking in 1998, yet the building has never yet been completed.
The church made continuous statements that the project would be done
"by the end of the year" and such, but it has never been completed. You
can see more such history in a letter I sent warning Clearwater at www.
lisa mcpherson.org/cos/construction.

Also, Scientology does not like outsiders visiting. In fact,
Scientology is trying to close down a highway that goes through their
property north of Hemet, California. They turn their sprinklers to face
the street and turn them on when protesters come by.

Tom Cruise's Daughter Leaves Him Over Scientology?
April 21, 2011, Tony Ortega, Runnin' Scared, Village Voice

Former Page Six-er Richard Johnson* (see below) is reporting at The
Daily that Tom Cruise's daughter, Isabella, 18, is fed up with
Scientology and has moved out of her father's house.

A Cruise publicist denied the report.

Johnson quotes two of our favorite Scientology sources, Marty Rathbun
and Mike Rinder, both of whom were very high up in the organization
until they bolted in 2004 and 2007, respectively.

When Scientologists Attack - The Village Voice
April 21, 2011, Marty Rathbun, Moving On Up a Little Higher
https://markrathbun.wordpress.com/2011/04/21/when-scientologists-attack-the-village-voice/

After two days in the edit bay Miscavige had the OSA baby blue shock
squad post a version of his take of the incident at my home on Monday.
I commented on the link to it someone posted on this blog, words to the
effect that I would go to court with his version - but I'll also get
all the footage from all four of his cameras before trial. Within
minutes the "church" took their video edit down. But not before some
members of Anonymous mirrored it and spread it far and wide.

Sunday Funnies: The United States of Scientology
April 21, 2013, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
https://tonyortega.org/2013/04/21/sunday-funnies-the-united-states-of-scientology/

Yesterday, Scientologists entered a new age. We've been learning lately
that Scientology leader David Miscavige has hit upon a new strategy to
wring out the last dollar from church members who have already given
until it hurts for his "Ideal Orgs" building program.

He calls it "alliances," and it involves convincing what few
Scientologists remain to band together and, well, give even more.

Yesterday, these alliances gathered in various places around the world
in order to celebrate Miscavige's notion that a dwindling movement just
needs to open up shiny and empty new buildings in order to...well,
we're not sure what he expects will happen.

The New Miscavige Birthday Game!
April 21, 2013, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
https://www.mikerindersblog.org/the-new-miscavige-birthday-game/

Remember when the LRH Birthday Game was about giving LRH the birthday
gift he wanted? Org Expansion...

Well, like a lot of other things in Miscavige Corporate Scientology,
there's a new sheriff in town and the organization is being modeled in
his image. Of course, there is no grand announcement that "the old
birthday game is no more" it's more subtle. Like "Command Intention"
morphed from "LRH intention" to "COB intention" and Miscavige gradually
assumed the role of "finder of lost tech" to "refiner of tech" to
"improver of tech" to "inventor of tech." The old Birthday Game has
been vanishing from view. "St Hill Size Orgs" is "old terminology", the
Universe Corps is but a fond memory. Today, Ideal Orgs are everything.

And this new promo piece is taking the next step into the full
evolution into the David Miscavige Birthday Game. And that means it's
now about what he wants for his birthday on 30 April. And that means
MONEY!!

Our man in Paris, Jonny Jacobsen, has another dispatch for us about
developments with Scientology in France. Take it away, Jonny...

In the interest of tying up loose ends, here are a couple of items,
both fall-out from France's definitive conviction of Scientology for
organised fraud last year.

The first deals with Scientology's latest attempt to persuade people
that the French state was the prime mover behind its recent fraud
convictions, rather than the courts that actually judged them.

I was forwarded this information by a Special Correspondent who pulled

I thought the information was interesting, though it troubles me there
are no numbers on the side of the graphs, so they look kind of like
Miscavigerally graphs - though the difference here is that these
represent REAL numbers, and they do show TRENDS.

What is remarkable about these graphs is the that they measure interest
in topics. I do not profess to know HOW they work this out, presumably
based on searches.

Frederick Council delays vote on Scientology-backed rehab center
April 21, 2015, Michael S. Rosenwald, Washington Post

The Frederick County Council delayed a vote Tuesday on whether to
approve a historical designation for Trout Run, a Camp David stand-in
on "The West Wing" that a Scientology-affiliated drug rehabilitation
program wants to use as a treatment facility.

Narconon, a controversial program that relies on saunas and the
writings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard to treat heroin addicts
and other drug abusers, needs the designation because the 40-acre
property's zoning doesn't allow such uses. A listing on the county
historical register would.

How the Hoover Institution Vacuums Up Big Conservative Bucks
April 21, 2015, Ade Adeniji, Inside Philanthropy
https://www.insidephilanthropy.com/home/2015/4/21/how-the-hoover-institution-vacuums-up-big-conservative-bucks.html

The Hoover Institution began as a library in 1919 and has grown into
one of America's top think tanks over the years. It ranked number #19
on a 2014 UPenn think tank report, below such outfits as Brookings
Institution (#1) and conservative giant the American Enterprise
Institute (#12). That influence is striking, giving that Hoover is
located nearly 3,000 miles from Washington, DC, on the campus of
Stanford University.

Like AEI, Hoover might be described as a moderate conservative think
tank-in contrast, say, to the Heritage Foundation and other policy
shops that push a harder line and have been aligned in recent years
with the Tea Party.

Hoover's moderate positioning makes sense, since Herbert Hoover himself
was certainly no doctrinaire conservative and even considered being a
Democrat at one time. The Hoover Institution's mission includes
principles such as "representative government, private enterprise,
peace, and personal freedom" and senior fellows at the institution have
included Condoleezza Rice, economist Thomas Sowell, and author Shelby
Steele.

He explains to Jeff about how slow Scientology was to embrace new

audio cassettes a week, well after the rest of the world had moved on

Why isn't the Church of Scientology paying its downtown tax bill?
April 21, 2015, Steve Vockrodt, The Pitch
https://www.pitch.com/kansascity/why-isnt-the-church-of-scientology-paying-its-downtown-tax-bill/Content?oid=5099594

Scientology is exempt from real-estate taxes because it's considered a
religion, a designation it strong-armed the Internal Revenue Service
into accepting in the early 1990s. But the church may be abusing that
privilege; Missouri law states that a property must be "actually and
regularly used exclusively for religious worship" in order for a
religious organization to retain tax-exempt status on it.

Edwin Stoll, deputy chief administrator for Jackson County, tells The
Pitch that the church has provided documentation that it holds events
at 1801 Grand during downtown parades and such.

How Lisa Marie Presley became Scientology leader David Miscavige's worst

https://tonyortega.org/2016/04/21/how-lisa-marie-presley-became-scientology-leader-david-miscaviges-worst-nightmare/

For more than a year, the Underground Bunker has been speaking with
sources close to Lisa Marie Presley who tell us that the daughter of
Elvis Presley has not only turned against Scientology leader David
Miscavige, but has taken steps to coordinate actions designed to
cripple Miscavige's rule.

Lisa Marie is using her media savvy and connections with other
celebrities and other important figures inside Scientology to release
explosive revelations about Miscavige, while keeping her own role quiet.
The result, so far, has been the skillfully timed release of media
stories that have damaged Miscavige at the same time that Scientology
is in a long term decline.

In Lisa Marie Presley, David Miscavige has cultivated a powerful enemy.
And in this story, we explain how things got to that point.

By now you've probably heard that the city of Clearwater is the proud
owner of a 1.4-acre parcel of downtown land after its city council
voted unanimously to purchase it from an aquarium company and defy the
Church of Scientology, which wanted the plot for its own uses.

The parcel sits between City Hall and two of Scientology's Clearwater
landmarks, the Fort Harrison and Oak Cove hotels, where wealthy
Scientologists come from around the world to pay for expensive auditing
levels they can get nowhere else.

Miscavige said he wanted the plot for a swimming pool for his hotel
guests, which was farcical. The real reason, former Scientology
spokesman Mike Rinder told us, was to keep non-Scientologists away from
the Fort Harrison, the church's holiest spot on Earth.

We sure have a treat for you today. On Thursday, after we posted
excerpts from L. Ron Hubbard's most notorious lecture, his 1968 lesson
about Xenu/Xemu and a 75 million-year-old genocide, we heard from
someone who served with Hubbard at the time, Hana Whitfield! We hope
you remember what an amazing job she did describing life on the high
seas with Hubbard in the 2015 HBO documentary, 'Going Clear.'

Anyway, we can hardly believe it, but Hana was inspired by our story on
Thursday and decided to share with us a chapter of a forthcoming book
she's been working on. She can't tell us the title or the publication
date of the book yet, but the chapter is all about her own experience
with Incident Two and OT 3 and Hubbard, and we knew you'd want to see it.

It was January 1968. Valencia harbor, Spain.

Scientology's mad real estate splurge has real consequences for its

The quest to completely replace old Scientology org buildings with new
quarters continues, and the consequences can be severe for some members
caught up in the project.

The Scotsman reported this week that Scientology has purchased the
Westfield House building in the Murrayfield area of Edinburgh as home
to a new Ideal Org.

The current org is known as HAPI, the Hubbard Academy of Personal
Independence and we assume the name will carry over to the new facility.
Scientology in Edinburgh is small and it's likely the building was
purchased with funds from the International Association of
Scientologists using donations from American members. Now comes the
push for donations to renovate the building. Unlike the decaying Ideal
Org buildings purchased elsewhere in the UK, this is a modern office
building and it shouldn't require major structural work. "Manchester is
Next" is the motto of the UK ideal org coalition, but after Manchester
could come HAPI.

The IAS Keeps on Lying
April 21, 2019, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
https://www.mikerindersblog.org/the-ias-keeps-on-lying/

The IAS are renowned for their BS, but this one is a doozie.

They "approved a grant" but they didn't spend it because they don't
have any photos of anyone on the scene. Just a generic shot from the
media of a flooded location.

So, to give them the benefit of the doubt, I checked out their Twitter
feed. A bunch of shots of the same 7 people, literally one after the
other. This is the "team" for the displaced 500,000 people:

Barr Threatens to Sue States That Don't Open When Trump Says
April 21, 2020, Jonathan Chait, New York Magazine
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/04/barr-threatens-sue-states-coronavirus-trump.html

President Trump has intermittently gone to war with public-health
experts, including those in his own administration, in an attempt to
restart the economy fast enough to help him win reelection. His biggest
obstacle - next to his administration's inability to produce enough
testing to allow local officials to safely reopen - is that he lacks
the legal authority to force states and cities to open up. After first
claiming total authority over the governors, Trump is looking for ways
to gain leverage to bring them to heel. He can whip up protests, and he
can withhold aid from the states and cities.

And now he is pulling out a new weapon: Attorney General William Barr.

In his last interview two weeks ago, Barr expressed several Trumpy
views about the coronavirus, complaining that the news media had
launched a "jihad" against the "promising" drug hydroxychloroquine, and
that "after the 30-day period, we have to find a way of allowing
businesses to adapt to the situation and figure out best how they can
get started."

Belief v. Fact
April 21, 2020, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
https://www.mikerindersblog.org/belief-v-fact/

This is a well laid out, calm and informative comment that responded to
a response from Aviv Bershadsky about my posting What Do Scientologists
Believe about COVID-19? I also note she has some interesting thoughts
about "othering" at the end which are not directed to Aviv but I kept
them because I think her views on things are worth looking at.

I felt it was valuable and too important to be lost as a comment to an
older post.

I asked the author for permission to print it and for a little
information about her.

City of Inglewood: Brian Statler shouldn't have resisted arrest and forced us
to shoot him dead
April 21, 2020, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
https://tonyortega.org/2020/04/21/city-of-inglewood-brian-statler-shouldnt-have-resisted-arrest-and-forced-us-to-shoot-him-dead/

The City of Inglewood has answered the lawsuit filed by Brian Statler's
family, and in predictably generic language denies that its police
officers did anything wrong when they ventilated the 30-year-old mixed
race man on March 27, 2019 at the Church of Scientology's Inglewood
"Ideal Org."

Since that tragic incident we've been trying to get answers about
Statler and the police, and readers know that it's been very slow going
- the city never released more information than Statler's name and age,
and most of what we know came from reports at the scene, none of which
has been very well confirmed. According to those reports, Statler had
arrived in a new white Bentley and was wielding a "samurai sword" at
the org. Police were called, some kind of confrontation occurred, and
Statler was shot dead. Bizarrely, the city initially said that Statler
"opened fire" on the officers, who were each injured, but the police
department has never explained how a man armed with a sword could "open
fire" and shoot the officers who killed him. (We suspect the officers
may have injured each other with crossfire, which is why the city is so
reluctant to discuss the case publicly.)

The federal civil rights and excessive force lawsuit was filed by
Statler's parents, Missouri resident Brian Statler Sr. and Pennsylvania
resident Stacey Meadors, and was recently joined by Statler's unnamed
3-year-old daughter, who is being represented by her mother, Decery
Capponi, who works for the Church of Scientology and has worked as a
receptionist at the Inglewood org.

Goat blood-drinking ex-Senate candidate, recently released from jail due to
coronavirus concerns, accused of stalking wife
April 21, 2020, Jeff Weiner, Orlando Sentinel

Augutus Sol Invictus, the white nationalist former U.S. Senate
candidate infamous for once claiming he sacrificed a goat and drank its
blood, was jailed in Orange County early Tuesday, accused of stalking
his wife.

Invictus, 36, was only recently released from a South Carolina jail,
where he was being held on domestic violence charges. A judge in late
March granted Invictus bond after he requested to be released in light
of concerns about the new coronavirus.

His latest arrest came after Invictus' wife called the Orange County
Sheriff's Office to report that he had been in contact with her since
his release from jail, violating the terms of his bond and a
restraining order, both of which said he could have no contact with her
whatsoever.

Making a bad situation worse: The choice between the economy and lives is a
false one
April 21, 2020, Scott Pilutik, Underground Bunker
https://tonyortega.org/2020/04/21/making-a-bad-situation-worse-the-choice-between-the-economy-and-lives-is-a-false-one/

The choice between the economy and lives is a false one. Our collective
internal risk calculus won't simply flip from 'unsafe' to 'safe'
because a governor lifts a stay-at-home order.

Sure, some people will go to the movies or a bowling alley this weekend
now that Georgia's governor gave the green light. But will enough
people go that those venues are actually profiting? Probably not. And
will enough people go to those venues to increase the likelihood of the
spread of the virus? Assuredly. That is, it won't be so crowded at the
bowing alley that it makes money, but it'll be crowded enough to
increase the spread of the virus.

And when the hospitals and morgues start filling up as a result of your
governor's negligence, people are going to be even more hesitant to
break out the bowling shoes. "Reopening" too early is lose-lose because
you increase deaths while prolonging economic recession.

Neo-Nazis Are Spreading a List of Emails and Passwords for Gates Foundation
and WHO Employees
April 21, 2020, Ben Makuch, Vice News
https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/akwxzp/neo-nazis-are-spreading-a-list-of-emails-and-passwords-for-gates-foundation-and-who-employees

A data dump of what appears to be the email addresses and passwords of
members of the Gates Foundation, World Health Organization (WHO),
Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and a virology center
based in Wuhan, China, is circulating within a network of neo-Nazi
extremists.

Though people on social media are claiming that this indicates the
Gates Foundation was hacked, based on what Motherboard has seen there
is nothing to indicate that is the case, nor is there anything to
indicate that the passwords are valid, current, or are even credentials
to log-in to Gates Foundation or WHO accounts.

The data dump and circulation appears to be an attempt at intimidating
several of the leading government and non-governmental groups currently
leading the fight against the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, though
it's likely many of the emails and passwords are outdated.

Richard Epstein Can't Stop Being Wrong About the Coronavirus
April 21, 2020, Jonathan Chait, New York Magazine
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/04/richard-epstein-coronavirus-500-5000-deaths.html

Richard Epstein is back. The esteemed Hoover Institution scholar and
libertarian theorist, a law professor by training, projected the
coronavirus would only kill 500 Americans, an analysis that gained wide
traction in conservative circles, including the Trump administration. A
week later, Epstein conceded that he had committed a math error, and
the real number would be 5,000 deaths, though "it, too, could prove
somewhat optimistic." (The current confirmed death toll exceeds 40,000.
) Then Epstein gave a horrifying interview to Isaac Chotiner, laced
with embarrassing errors including admitting he assumed the virus would
weaken for absolutely no scientific reason, boasting erroneously that
public-health eminence Bill Gates shared his skepticism that the
coronavirus was a serious threat, which is a bit like saying you're
pretty sure Bernie Sanders is on board with your plan to eliminate the
minimum wage, and many others.

Somehow this experience has not shaken Epstein's confidence in his own
ability to outthink the entire field of epidemiology. Epstein has
written another essay, making no reference to his previous errors,
arguing that "the response of the state governors to the coronavirus
outbreak has become far more dangerous than the disease itself."

I am neither an epidemiologist nor an expert in public health, and
therefore I have no qualifications to second-guess the leading minds in
either field. But I am qualified to second-guess the second-guessing of
those experts by Richard Epstein, because his arguments are amateurish
and transparently silly.

Tx Republican on State Reopening: 'There Are More Important Things Than
Living'
April 21, 2020, Matt Stieb, New York Magazine
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/04/dan-patrick-there-are-more-important-things-than-living.html

In late March - the last time that Republican leaders attempted an
early opening of the economy at the potential expense of American lives
- Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick caught the nation's attention
when he told Fox News' Tucker Carlson that he, and many grandparents
like him, would be willing to die from the coronavirus "in exchange for
keeping the America that all America loves for your children and
grandchildren." Almost a month later - with governors throughout the
country preparing to reopen without the safety that adequate levels of
testing would provide - Patrick returned to Carlson's show this week to
reiterate his macabre pursuit of a V-shaped economic recovery.

"There are more important things than living, and that's saving this
country for my children and grandchildren and saving this country for
all of us," he said late on Monday. "I don't want to die. Nobody wants
to die, but man we gotta take some risks and get back in the game and
get this country back up and running."

While Texas governor Greg Abbott has announced that schools would
remain closed for the remainder of the academic year, his "statewide
strike force" announced on Friday is determining how to reopen the Lone
Star economy while effectively flying blind. Though the population of
Texas is close to 29 million people, the state has only conducted
169,536 tests as of Friday.
