'Vigilantes' Termed Worrisome
August 24, 1991, Carol M. Ostrom, Seattle Times
http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=1301648&date=19910824

In the early "80s, many deprogramming efforts were focused on members
of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church, said Robertson, a
Baptist minister who teaches comparative religion at Maryland Bible
College and Seminary. "I certainly don't believe in their theology," he
says. "But (deprogramming) still is wrong - I don't care what the
church group is."

Tom Cruise's Behavior and Scientology: A Link?
August 24, 2006, Bill Blakemore, ABC News
http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=2352384&page=1

The New York Times this morning said simply that Cruise has gone "into
full Scientology mode." Indeed, his recent responses to Matt Lauer,
inveighing against modern psychiatric care, reflect Scientology's claim
that its own methods of "auditing" people to get them "clear" are the
only true way to win genuine happiness.

Survey: What Impinges -- Results

I recently posted a survey designed to discover what caused people to
stop supporting the Church of Miscavology and what current
Scientologists are disaffected about.

Many responded on Steve Hall's website, many more sent private emails.
Thanks to everyone who participated. There were enough sordid stories
to keep a horror movie fan occupied for nights on end.

they have ruled that the Church of Scientology must cough up $413,500

The Top 25 People Crippling Scientology, No. 17: Jefferson Hawkins
August 24, 2011, Tony Ortega, Runnin' Scared, Village Voice
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/08/jefferson_hawkins_top_25_crippling_scientology.php

Another reason why Hawkins is a key defector is that he had such a
personal knowledge of the actual vital signs of the church's health.
There may be no one with a more authoritative knowledge of
Scientology's actual membership numbers.

"I have an advantage here because I used to work for Scientology's
Central Marketing Unit, and had access to all of the actual lists and
statistics," he wrote at his blog last year. And he explained how he
came up with an overall number of worldwide members: "I know that event
attendance internationally was somewhere in the region of 25,000 to
35,000. The International 'Bodies in the Shop' (people actually in the
orgs that week for service) was 16,000 to 18,000. IAS was struggling to
get 40,000 members. Based on this and a lot of other information I was
privy to, I estimate the actual number of Scientologists at a maximum
of 40,000. That's on the high side."

Marty Rathbun: Scientology's Attorney "Supervised" Destruction of Records in
Lisa McPherson Death
August 24, 2012, Tony Ortega, Runnin' Scared, Village Voice
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2012/08/scientology_marty_rathbun_eliot_abelson.php

For the last year or more, Mark Bunker has been releasing short
excerpts from his upcoming Scientology documentary Knowledge Report,
and yesterday, he released a doozy.

Bunker had told me that he'd interviewed former church executive Marty
Rathbun, and in this excerpt, we see Rathbun addressing the kinds of
things many have wanted him to talk about: what happened with Lisa
McPherson, a parishioner who died in a Scientology hotel in 1995? I
have a feeling his responses here will cause as much skepticism as
anything else, but what he has to say about Scientology attorney Elliot
Abelson should cause an uproar.

McPherson died after she was held for 17 days at the Fort Harrison
Hotel in Clearwater, Florida following a mental breakdown. As Janet
Reitman describes in rich detail in her 2011 book Inside Scientology,
McPherson had been a dedicated Scientologist whose life had
increasingly spun out of control. Her death became the church's biggest
crisis to that point, leading to a criminal investigation and years of
civil litigation.

Pittsburg County: Narconon Arrowhead investigation nearly over

The findings of an investigation into an Oklahoma alcohol and drug
rehabilitation center could be announced soon.

Pittsburg County officials say their investigation into the
controversial deaths of three recent Narconon Arrowhead patients was
expected to be ready for the district attorney Friday, but an unforseen
delay pushed back the release.

OSBI is also investigating, and has placed a rush on the medical
examiner's report.

Scientology And Saving The World
August 24, 2012, Marty Rathbun, Moving On Up a Little Higher
https://markrathbun.wordpress.com/2012/08/23/scientology-and-saving-the-world/

In 1950 L. Ron Hubbard burst onto the scene tackling the attainment of
the ends of Eastern spiritualism with the practicality mindset of
Western materialism. He developed two related subjects toward that end,
Dianetics, and its outgrowth, Scientology. Within two to three years he
had described in pratical English terms having seen the universal
truths as outlined in the Vedas and in the Tao Te Ching. He also
described modern exercises that he discovered and developed to bring
others to that experience. He spent the rest of his life attempting to
undercut the route so that virtually anyone from any station in life or
of whatever educational background could traverse it. In that effort to
reach and effect all, matters eventually became complicated. An
insidious parallel to helping and saving all peoples of earth evolved
throughout Scientology writings. That is, the stress became not so much
to make Scientology accessible to everybody as much as to make
Scientology mandatory for everyone. This approach led to a type of dual
personality for the subject. On the one hand it intended to release an
individual from the restraints of life and to restore freedom of choice.
On the other hand, it usurped freedom of choice and imposed restraints
in the attempt to get every person there.

Control and restraint themes developed throughout Scientology writings.
It was justified by the repeated idea that Dianetics and Scientology
contain the answers to every problem and every question that every
person ever faced; with the repeated emphatic idea that no one else has
anything of use to contribute to those answers. The theme was evident
in a substantial body of proselytization and ethics policy that
justified any means necessary to leading the clueless to the only show
in town. These policies dedicatedly applied wound up appealing to a
broad spectrum of people as intended. That included people who wanted
to communicate better, to find their sanity, to improve memory, to sell
more, to be more successful, to have more meaningful relationships, to
make more money, to dominate and control others, to reach higher states
of spiritual awareness, to be more powerful, to get off drugs, to learn
how to study, and even to reach immortality. In promoting to all those
looking for these answers and more, and representing to those publics
that those wants were all that Scientology was interested in helping
them with, all the while intending and organizing to direct such people
toward ultimately making Scientology the answer to everything weaved a
strain of fraud into the woof and warp of its organizations.

Fraud requires as its central element the making of a misrepresentation
that the communicator knows is false. In the case of Scientology, the
recurrent, systemic knowing lie has nothing to do with the lack of
efficacy of Scientology itself. When a Scientologist tells somebody
that Scientology contains the answer to his problem, as well as every
answer to every problem that person will ever face, that Scientologist
believes that representation implicitly. The knowing misrepresentation
that virtually every Scientologist is guilty of making over and over
again is that whatever particular problem a seeker wants solved is the
only problem the Scientology organization is interested in solving. In
fact, Scientology scripture very methodically details how to use the
solving of a particular problem as the bait to be switched toward
creating a new bigger problem for the bait biter to pursue.
Scientologists will vehemently protest my use of words such as
"misrepresentation" and "fraud." But, the fact of the matter is that
many of the significant problems that have nagged or lessened the reach
of Scientology organizations stemmed from this inculcated lie.

Scientology's Narconon: A Legacy of Failure and Death
August 24, 2012, Skip Press, Morton Report

Recently, the organization Narconon, whose stated mission is "to
eradicate the problems of drug and alcohol abuse through effective drug
prevention, drug education and drug rehabilitation services," has been
in the news for a series of deaths at its flagship facility, Narconon
Arrowhead.

A number of articles appeared in the Village Voice, perhaps the most
telling being an interview with veteran Oklahoma newsman Bob Lobsinger,
whose headline quote about Narconon was, "They Lied Every Step of the

TONIGHT: LA Sheriff Lee Baca to Grace Scientology Gala, Days after "Celebrity

August 24, 2013, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
http://tonyortega.org/2013/08/24/tonight-scientologys-hollywood-celebrity-center-gala-will-shelly-be-there/

Lee Baca shilling for Scientology at an event in November On Tuesday,
Scientology's Director of Public Relations for its Las Vegas "Celebrity
Center," Devon Newman, was arrested for her part in a bizarre plot to
kidnap, try, and execute a local police officer to make a political
point for the "sovereign citizens" movement.

Tonight, Scientology's Celebrity Center in Hollywood holds its 44th
annual gala, and besides the usual church celebrities who are expected
to show, we've been told that Los Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca plans to
make an appearance early in the evening.

For years, Baca has been an enthusiastic supporter of Scientology,
showing up at many church events. But this time, we're wondering if any
press covering the event will dare to ask him about the Celebrity
Center employee who was planning to kill a cop, or about Shelly
Miscavige, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavge, who hasn't
been seen in public in six years.

Church of Scientology before his business was placed in administration
with almost $3 million in debts.

Chris Lucas, famous for his pink tutu and "hello, hello" catchphrase,
was hailed as a "Patron with Honours" for donating $100,000 to the
church, according to a document claiming to be a leaked Scientologists

Orlando Magic

No wonder the "ideal org" in Orlando never gets mentioned even though
it is BY FAR the closest org to Flag and Tampa - both of whom are
busily trying to raise funds for Miami and Atlanta.

This is Orlando's "ideal org" website, last updated sometime in 2011,
though they seem to have an automatic counter that adds a day from
"Ideal Orgs Seminar 2011."

They got a "building approved" - hooray for us! An instant "ideal org"
- plucked right out of a hat. Amazing. It truly represents Miscavige's
ideal org tag-line "just add water and mix."

Paul Haggis: 'shame on' press for not asking Tom Cruise about Scientology

Scientology Internet Fail
August 24, 2015, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
http://www.mikerindersblog.org/scientology-internet-fail/

Try as they might, scientology is incapable of accomplishing any
positive results on the internet.

Miscavige shows "stats" at his events like "people look up scientology
every 1.63 seconds" or "we have 627Xed the reach for our programs on
the internet" or other completely meaningless statements. All the while
they continue to raise money for the "KCET studios" because this
facility will allow scientology to "take over the internet."

Miscavige has spent a LOT of money to create a video driven website at
scientology.org. And probably more money paying than that to click
farms in India and the Philippines to try to raise traffic rankings for
the site. It's been a desperate quest to gain credibility on the
internet.

Tonight, it's Boston! And that has us thinking about Beantown's connections

http://tonyortega.org/2015/08/24/tonight-its-boston-and-that-has-us-thinking-about-beantowns-connections-to-miss-lovely/

Hey, we're in Boston tonight for the resumption of our tour. While
Paulette Cooper is cruising to London, we'll be near Harvard Square
talking about the book we wrote about her. (We're hoping to reunite
with Paulette for another joint appearance this fall.)

Our appearance tonight has us thinking about a couple of mentions of
Boston in our book.

In the summer of 1973 Paulette had been indicted after Scientology
operatives managed to get her fingerprint on a piece of stationery and
then typed up a bomb threat they mailed to the New York org, then
called the FBI and told them Paulette was threatening to blow up a
church. Paulette was facing fifteen years in federal prison and a
$15,000 fine, and she was looking for ways to build a defense before
her trial, which was scheduled for October. Desperate for legal help,
she decided to pay a visit to famous defense attorney F. Lee Bailey,
who was actually disbarred at the time. So she took the train to
Boston, and here's what The Unbreakable Miss Lovely says happened next...
