Behind Facade of Harmony, Nations Are Far Apart on Some Basic Issues
December 9, 1997, John Dornberg, International Herald Tribune
http://www.iht.com/articles/1997/12/09/sus.t.php

Some of them are tempests in teapots. The most ludicrous is tacit State
Department backing of the claim that Bonn is discriminating against the
Church of Scientology, and the recent House International Relations
Committee draft resolution calling on the White House to censure Bonn
for its stance on Scientology. It was only when the House as a whole
voted against the measure that the air cleared.

Church's complaints take buses off road
December 9, 1998, Thomas C. Tobin, St. Petersburg Times
http://www.sptimes.com/TampaBay/120998/Church_s_complaints_t.html

The ads were purchased by church critics and were to be on buses
Saturday through Monday as part of a weekend-long protest against
Scientology.

Each of the 11 ads carried a different message. Among them: "Think for
Yourself. Quit Scientology," "Find out why so many people oppose
Dianetics and Scientology" and "Why does Scientology lie to its
members?"

Scientology representatives began phoning the homes of transit and
Clearwater city officials after the buses began rolling Saturday
morning. The church argued that the ads violated a state law regarding
published material that "tends to expose any individual or any
religious group to hatred, contempt, ridicule or (abusive language)."

Britain denies Scientologists status as charitable group
December 9, 1999, Seattle Times
http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19991209&slug=3000389

Government officials denied the Church of Scientology charitable status
today, saying it does not provide any public services.

Scientologists said they would appeal the decision, announced by the
Charity Commission, which regulates charities.

The commission said the church did not meet the essential test for
charitable status - "that of conferring public benefit."

Church loads up for one last fight
December 9, 2001, Deborah O'Neil, St. Petersburg Times
http://www.sptimes.com/News/120901/NorthPinellas/Church_loads_up_for_o.shtml

A civil wrongful-death lawsuit, itself now almost 5 years old, alleges
church workers let McPherson die Dec. 5, 1995, in the Fort Harrison
Hotel, where she spent the last 17 days of her life being cared for by
fellow Scientologists. The lawsuit contends that church staffers
allowed McPherson, 36, to become so dehydrated she was too weak even to
stop cockroaches from biting her.

As it did in the criminal case, Scientology has committed exhaustive
resources to defending itself, assembling a squadron of top-notch
lawyers and nationally known scientists. Observers say the aggressive
legal strategy is designed to outlast the opponent, Ken Dandar, a Tampa
lawyer representing McPherson's estate.

"They are going to and have worked Dandar to a near-death experience,"
said longtime Clearwater attorney Denis deVlaming, who has represented
some of Scientology's harshest critics.

Scientology
December 9, 2006, Oliver Burkeman, Weekend, The Guardian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,,1966433,00.html

The centre used to be a shabby shop offering free personality tests.
But Scientology has revamped it, and now it's bright and welcoming, as
if to forestall the accusation that they might be a secretive cult. A
smiling man in a suit smiled at me and invited me to watch a video.
"Then I"ll explain some more," he smiled. Did I mention he was smiling?

Space aliens notwithstanding, new age kookiness isn't the problem here.
The more I explore self-help, the more tolerant I become of those who
believe in angels and spirit guides: they're well-meaning, mostly, and
if I happen not to share their metaphors for understanding life, so be
it. But Scientologists claim to be scientific. (There's a clue in the
name.)

Court fight looms as Germany seeks to outlaw Scientologists
December 9, 2007, Imre Karacs, The Sunday Times
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article3022202.ece

The Church of Scientology vowed yesterday to invoke America's help in
its battle against the German government, which declared it
unconstitutional last week in the first step towards an outright ban.

Sabine Weber, president of the church in Berlin, said the organisation
would drag the German government through the courts and expected to
win, with support from the US State Department.

County supervisors back away from anti-picketing measure
December 9, 2008, San Diego Union-Tribune
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/riverside/20081209-1500-picketing.html

Concerned that a proposed anti-picketing ordinance might be too
restrictive ? and that it did not address the issue that inspired it ?
the Board of Supervisors Tuesday backed away from the measure, but
indicated it may be brought back in different form.

"I don't agree we should abandon this completely, but I want us as
united on this as possible," said Riverside County Supervisor Jeff
Stone, who sponsored the measure.

Riverside County supervisors will vote on picketing ordinance
December 9, 2008, Desert Sun
https://web.archive.org/web/20081212040429/http://www.mydesert.com/article/20081209/NEWS01/81209003/1006/news01

A divided Riverside County Board of Supervisors is expected today to
approve an ordinance to restrict residential picketing.

Supervisor Jeff Stone's proposed measure would confine "targeted
picketing" to no closer than 300 feet of a person's residence.

The "time, place and manner" restriction, which would apply to
residents living in unincorporated communities, is necessary in light
of recent protests at a religious compound, according to Stone.

His chief of staff, Verne Lauritzen, identified members of the Church
of Scientology in San Jacinto as inspiration for the ordinance.

Charitable Front: Mysterious organizations in the Bay Area profess to be
advocating for liberal causes. In truth, they appear to be part of a
secretive group with a bizarre radical past.
December 9, 2009, Matt Smith, SF Weekly
http://www.sfweekly.com/content/printVersion/1778016

In his experience, leaders of the Coalition of Concerned Legal
Professionals seemed more concerned about getting him to attend Marxist
indoctrination sessions and using his work on the farmworker litigation
case to recruit new volunteers and members than about actually
succeeding with the suit: "The organization itself was more of a
hindrance than a help." Palik split with the group in 2002.

According to ex-members Whitnack and Fahlberg, professionals such as
doctors and lawyers are to NatlFed what movie stars are to Scientology.
They're recruited to lend authority to the group, but aren't
necessarily informed of its core revolutionary mission, and are not
required to endure the isolation and other privations of full-time
members.

Mother in lake plunge with body of disabled daughter after she 'killed her by

Mrs Richmond, whose customers included the Queen Mother, had suffered a

an allergy to metallic objects, and began administering experimental

Controversy waits in the wings as 'Scientology Pageant' takes to stage
December 9, 2010, John Fleming, Tampa Bay Times
http://www.tampabay.com/features/performingarts/controversy-waits-in-the-wings-as-scientology-pageant-takes-to-stage/1138718

Scientology Pageant was first performed off Broadway seven years ago,
but this will be its Florida premiere, right in the back yard of
Scientology's spiritual headquarters in Clearwater. When Kyle Jarrow,
who wrote the book, music and lyrics for the show, heard it was being
done in the Tampa Bay area, the irony was not lost on him.

"Wow!" Jarrow told the St. Petersburg Times when the production was
announced in November. "Clearwater is almost ground zero for
Scientology. That's sure to be extra controversial."

December 9, 2011, Tony Ortega, Runnin' Scared, Village Voice

On November 18, we started a new feature here on Fridays: the Voice has
obtained hundreds of copies of L. Ron Hubbard's previously unpublished
"Orders of the Day," which he gave to crew members as he sailed the
Mediterranean. Our documents cover the period from 1968 to 1971, and
this time we're looking at what was happening the week of December 4
through 10 during those years.

After the jump, LRH names the evil entity that is trying to sabotage
Scientology...

Jenni Rivera Missing, Plane Crash Suspected
December 9, 2012, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker

Just saw the news that Jenni Rivera, the Mexican-American singer from
Los Angeles, is missing after her plane lost contact with air traffic
controllers in Mexico. (The latest news is that wreckage of the plane
was found, and there were no survivors. This is really sad news.)

A decade ago, when we were writing for a newspaper in LA that doesn't
exist anymore, New Times LA, we had the privilege of getting to know
the Rivera family, in particular Jenni, who was already a huge star
among the Latino population there but completely unknown by the
mainstream media.

We wanted to share with you the wonderful young woman we got to know at
the end of 2001.

Ryan Hogarth Steps Forward
December 9, 2013, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
http://www.mikerindersblog.org/ryan-hogarth-steps-forward/

The disintegration of the Radical Church in South Africa is rolling
forward at a rapid clip.

The Sea Org Missionaires sent to try and regain control of the train
that left the station are doing their best imitation of kamikaze pilots
as they head straight down and vertical in a spectacular suicide
mission. Not only did they arrive with a bang and declare 18 prominent
OTs and field Opinion Leaders (including the biggest supporters of the
Ideal Orgs in South Africa) they are now conducting a witch hunt "Comm
Ev" that is soliciting rumors and "declaring" the next round of those
who are not in agreement with their gestapo tactics. This is a failed
mission floundering around in a scene that is far worse than what they
expected to find. It's a suicide mission if ever there was one....

And that brings us to Ryan Hogarth.

Scientology asks for psychiatric examination of Laura DeCrescenzo in forced-
abortion lawsuit
December 9, 2013, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
http://tonyortega.org/2013/12/09/scientology-asks-for-psychiatric-examination-of-laura-decrescenzo-in-forced-abortion-lawsuit/

Laura DeCrescenzo (center) with Marc and Claire Headley as word emerged
that Scientology's motion for summary judgment had been defeated The
Church of Scientology has already demonstrated that it will go to
extraordinary lengths to fight and derail the lawsuit filed in 2009 by
former Sea Org member Laura DeCrescenzo.

Just to contest an order to turn over evidence in the lawsuit, for
example, Scientology filed multiple appeals - even petitioning the U.S.
Supreme Court - but was ultimately forced to fork over the 18,000 pages
of documentation which bolstered Laura's case that she was manipulated
as a child worker of the church, including being compelled to have an
abortion at 17.

With that evidence in hand, Laura won a huge victory in October when
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ronald Sohigian denied Scientology's
motion for summary judgment. Finally, after four years, Laura's case
was headed for trial. But now, Scientology, perhaps predictably, has
attempted to throw up a new set of hurdles to prevent Laura's evidence
from being heard by a jury. And one of those hurdles is truly stunning.

Ex-Scientologist Marc Headley Videotapes Ambush Outside Church's
International Base
December 9, 2014, Zoe Mintz, International Business Times
http://www.ibtimes.com/ex-scientologist-marc-headley-videotapes-ambush-outside-churchs-international-base-1745246

On Monday night, former Scientology "Sea Org" worker Marc Headley
brought a Danish documentary crew to Gilman Springs Road -- a road that
runs through the compound. According to Headley, a recent mudslide
destroyed part of a fence that runs along the facility that keeps the
public out and members in, The Undergound Bunker reports.

Just as the segment was underway, Headley says a group of
Scientologists ambushed him and the film crew. He managed to pull out
his iPhone and film three videos roughly two minutes in length each.
The clips show Headley arguing with a woman who refutes Headley's
claims that members are imprisoned on the compound.

Scientology ambush! Another crazy encounter, this time with Marc Headley at

December 9, 2014, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
http://tonyortega.org/2014/12/09/scientology-ambush-another-crazy-encounter-this-time-with-marc-headley/

Just a few weeks ago, former Scientology executive Mark "Marty" Rathbun
found himself confronted by three high-ranking church officials who
ambushed him at a gate in the Los Angeles International Airport while
carrying cameras and speaking bizarrely. The video Rathbun shot of the
encounter got a lot of attention in the press as it captured the
strange way Scientology has of dealing with former members.

And now it's happened again. Last night, former Scientology "Sea Org"
worker Marc Headley accompanied a television crew from Denmark as it
surveyed the flood damage at Scientology's secretive International Base
east of Los Angeles. Headley tells us that a mudslide which had closed
Gilman Springs Road (the road that bifurcates the 500 acre compound)
has wiped out a whole section of the fence that not only keeps the
public out of the facility, but also is intended to keep Scientologists
at the base from getting out.

The Greatest Event Ever - Til The Next One
December 9, 2014, Mike Rinder, Something Can Be Done About It
http://www.mikerindersblog.org/the-greatest-event-ever-til-the-next-one/

Well, this should be interesting.

The largest scientology community on earth is getting going early on
the hard sell to show up to see the David Miscavige show live. I hope
someone in LA will sacrifice themselves for 3 hours of pain so we get a
report on the attendance and activities. It will be VERY telling how
full the Shrine is. If they cannot round up 6300 people from all over
California, including all the Sea Org staff and all those ideal orgs,
it would be a VERY poor show.

In fact, according to the hype, they are coming from all over the world.
I guess they ALREADY know they cannot get 6300 people together in LA
from the largest scientology third dynamic on earth!(r).

Arcadia woman says refusal to learn Scientology got her fired in Pasadena

An Arcadia woman is suing her former employer, alleging she was fired
for refusing to participate in mandatory on-the-job Scientology classes.

Annie R. Lee's lawsuit against Pasadena-based Lusida Rubber Products
Inc. and two company executives, Wayne Chin and William Johonnesson,
alleges wrongful termination, religious discrimination, failure to
prevent religious discrimination, harassment and retaliation.

Lee seeks unspecified damages and an injunction enjoining Lusida from

Chin said today he may have a comment later after he reviews the
lawsuit, which was filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Document leak: When the FBI investigated Scientology's bizarre New Mexico

We have a juicy document for you today, courtesy of our friend and
dogged researcher, R.M. Seibert.

You knew that the FBI investigated and raided Scientology in 1977, and
Lawrence Wright revealed in his 2011 New Yorker article that the FBI
investigated Scientology for human trafficking in 2009-2010. But here's
what we didn't know until now - the FBI also investigated Scientology
in the late 1980s for the bizarre underground vault it was digging in
the New Mexico desert.

We've written several times about the most secret of Scientology's many
secretive entities, the Church of Spiritual Technology (CST), which was
formed in 1982, two years after Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard went
into permanent hiding.

Disconnection, neglect, and suicide: Scientology, it's even worse than you

December 9, 2016, Tony Ortega, Underground Bunker
http://tonyortega.org/2016/12/09/disconnection-neglect-and-suicide-scientology-its-even-worse-than-you-think/

We first heard from Marie Bilheimer more than a year ago. Like so many
other former members of the Church of Scientology, she wanted to
communicate with us even though she wasn't ready to go public with her
story.

We understood. Marie's is one of the more disturbing tales that we've
heard, and we told her we'd be here when she decided she wanted our
readers to hear what she'd been through.

We're hearing from a lot of people now that Leah Remini is changing the
public understanding of Scientology in a big way with her A&E series,
Scientology and the Aftermath. And one of the people we heard from was
Marie. Emboldened by Leah's show, she's decided it's time to come
forward.

And we'll just say, you should brace yourself.
