protocols for 56-kilobit-per-second modems:
k56flex:
* Connects by going "EeeeeeeeeeeRRRRRRrrrEEErrr" and then goes real slow.
X2:
* Connects by going "EeeeeeeeeeeRRRRRReeeRRRrrrCRUNCH".
v.90:
* Connects by going "EeeeeeeeeeeRRRRRReee***SPROING!***SPROING!***doodle"
and then mysteriously hangs up the phone whenever it senses that you're
about to get to the good part of something.
So, in my case at least, X2 works the best, but I really like the wacky
noises that v.90 makes. Is there a way I can have my modem still actually
do X2, but sound like v.90?

I think mine's connecting with v.90 to one of my sites and with something
else to the other.

You could do what I did, and adjust your com port settings to try to get
Dungeon Keeper 2 to run on your machine, only to find later from a friend that
it wasn't running because your machine doesn't _have_ a kind of chip it says
it can do fine without, but apparently actually can't, and then readjust
them back, but have the first adjustment be picked up by HyperTerm and the
second not be, with the result that Line Noise Invades Your Typing (but only
for one of the sites) for the next week and a half until you finally SNAP and
start searching thoroughly through -all- the places settings are hidden on
the Windows scrollbar and find boxes to check which fix the problem.
What was the problem? Oh yeah. Or you could install Juno, for a friend, and
find your Hyperterm mysteriously upped its max setting from 10-some K to
115200. (True story. It's not faking it either - it now downloads faster than I
can read. Which _is_ in fact Going Some.) So that now the modem makes a
different set of noises than it did six months ago when it connects.

Sure, just create an Applescript which plays a v.90 AIFF everytime you
connect.
