E.U. Gloats Over Belated U.S. Health Care Reform
By Vivienne Walt / Paris Tuesday, Mar. 23, 2010

Europeans are gloating this week. The continent might be struggling
with ballooning debts, a faltering euro and national strikes, but when
the U.S. House voted in favor of President Barack Obama's health care
bill Sunday night, March 21, Europeans seized the moment to thumb
their noses at Americans and remind them that they've had pretty good
health care for decades.

"On Sunday evening the richest, most powerful country in the world,
the USA, finally entered the 20th century. Yes, not the 21st century,
but the 20th," read an article published Monday on the popular French
news website Rue89.com. The site also posted a copy of TIME's cover
from Nov. 24, 2008, showing Obama as a contemporary Franklin D.
Roosevelt, below which it placed a cartoon of Obama on the phone to
French President Nicolas Sarkozy, saying, "Hi, Nicolas, how's your
health?" The Dutch daily De Volkskrant noted that the change was a
long time coming: "Where health care was until now a closed privilege,
Obama and the Democrats have made it a law," read an article in the
paper Monday. "One of the most important differences between America
and other industrialized countries has finally been lifted." (See
pictures of Obama discussing his health care plan.)

Europeans have long expressed dismay at the fact that millions of
Americans have no health insurance, and tales of American suffering
are always in the media. One such article appeared in Monday's edition
of Le Figaro, France's biggest morning paper, which focused on a young
woman who is dying of breast cancer in New York City's Bellevue
Hospital because she had no health coverage and didn't get her
diagnosis in time. "She might live to see President Obama sign the
law, but she won't benefit from it," the article said.

In Europe, voters demand that their governments offer good public
services — including decent education and medical care — and regularly
vote them out of office when they fail to deliver. Taxes may be
slightly higher in Europe, but medical fees are heavily subsidized by
governments and are drastically cheaper than they are in the U.S. The
French, for example, pay a fixed $30 for a doctor's visit — and
proposals to raise that fee even a few cents can ignite national
protests. And in most of Europe, insurance companies are barred from
rejecting applicants because of pre-existing conditions. (See pictures
of immigration in Europe.)

The fundamental difference between Europe and the U.S., Europeans
believe, is that Americans regard public services as a bonus rather
than a basic right. For some, this is evidence that the American
system is deeply flawed. "It was a scandal that the world's richest
country for so long offered its citizens such pitiful protection
against illness or injury," wrote Gregor Peter Schmitz, Washington
correspondent for Der Spiegel on its website Monday. "It seems
entirely possible that, in 10 years time, Americans will find it hard
to believe that they didn't always have the right to health
insurance."

Aside from concern for the well-being of Americans, Europeans had
another reason to want to see health care reform pass: Obama's
political standing. Obama remains hugely popular in most of the
continent, and European papers have treated the health care vote as a
measure of the President's ability to push through his other policies.
An editorial in Monday's Le Monde newspaper in France, titled simply
"A Victory," referred not to the big news in France that day — the
left's strong showing in the French regional elections — but to
Obama's health care success. The President "succeeded where his
predecessors have failed," the paper said, including the deeply
unpopular George W. Bush, who it said "abandoned all ambitions on this
issue." (See 10 players in health care reform.)

With the health care victory in hand, Europeans will now want Obama to
get back to issues more relevant to the continent, Schmitz wrote in
Der Spiegel. While American politicians have battled over health care,
"every other issue has become a sideshow," he says. "The Afghanistan
mission: of marginal interest. Protecting the environment: postponed.
Peace in the Middle East: off in the distance. Sanctions against Iran:
delayed. Europe: not even worth a trip." Ouch.

It's weird how celebrity-obsessed Republicans think this was all Obama's

BUT by the time it turns to shit, which there is no doubt that it
will, he will be out of office. Why do you think that almost all
provisions of the bill that will hit the people in their pocket don't
take effect for at least 4 years? The plan is two fold, screw the
insurance companies by requiring them to accept all prior conditions
and exempt lifetime limits immediately while making sure they don't
get any benefit from the 23 million new customers for at least 4
years. Then, and only then, start forcing people to buy insurance and
spending a substantial percentage of their income while providing some
undefined amount of federal help with premiums.

I have no doubt that's Obama's plan..... sadly, we still have free
speech in this country, and Americans aren't stupid.

Just today, ATT announced that the place will cost them a billion
dollars in profits, and are downsizing accordingly. Same with John
Deer, Caterpillar, and several other corporations. The Democrats are
counting on Americans losing interest.... but that's just not going to
happen.

Why do you think that so many posters on this group have essentially
told everyone to SHUT UP and accept it? They are hoping that we will
do just that and they can then proceed with the next step of the
takeover. What really makes me laugh is that they somehow believe
they are going to profit from all of this. In the end, we will all be
the losers.

I remember when the Bush Republicans were saying that - calling it the
"Pottery Barn" rule.
Then, the Pottery Barn issued a press release, correcting them.
In TRUTH, their store policy is not, was not, and shall not be "you break it
you buy it".

But that's the truth, and Republicans HATE the truth, almost as much as they
hate the US government.

Yah. Well the "great uniter", Obammao, has given the PEOPLE the

conservatives to overthrow his marxist regime.

You have to guts to insist that questioning the government means
hating one's country, after posting THIS last year?

Monday afternoon at about 5pm, Cindy Sheehan is hosting a
demonstration at
George Bush's house in Dallas.
There are about a zillion reasons to demonstrate against the
Republican war
criminal, but the subject of this demonstration will be his Crimes
Against
Humanity - of which there are several.

The most notable of his CoH was the creation of a global network of
torture
centers.
These torture centers were established to commit acts that are
criminal in
all of the developed nations, including the US.
Had he allowed them to operate here in the US, he would already be in
prison.
But by establishing them in other countries, sometimes without the
host
country's knowledge, this crime exceeded the threshold for state or
federal
crimes, and even for war crimes - reaching the level of "Crimes
Against
Humanity".

Other CoH offenses include how he handled his War Against the People
of
Iraq.
Among the COH's he committed there, the most notable is how he
completely
disregarded the Geneva convention - and declared that Prisoners of War
were
not POW's.
In that case, rather than have the POW's tortured, they would torture
the
POW's *family* instead.
This tactic proved very effective at getting the POW's to admit to all
kinds
of things - which later turned out to be untrue.

While some hard-core Bush loyalists insist that it was the Bush's
family
friend, Dick Cheney, who is SOLELY responsible for these CoH's, most
people
throughout the world recognize that it was Rev. Bush himself who gave
the
orders and approved the tactics.

Also, some folks have claimed that this demonstration will
inconvenience Mr.
Bush's neighbors - but since they have allied themselves with the
terror
chief, they too are legitimate targets for the demonstration.

Demonstrators who do not have CCH licenses are encouraged to leave
their
firearms at home, however those who DO have the CCH licenses are
encouraged
to bring those weapons to the demonstration - but to keep them
concealed
until they are needed.

Never forget - these people ARE terrorists and are likely to respond
with
violence against the peaceful demonstration. So be prepared to defend
yourself - preemptively, if the situation warrants.

A scorpion asks a frog to carry him across a river. The frog is afraid of
being stung, but the scorpion reassures him that if it stung the frog, the
frog would sink and the scorpion would drown as well. The frog then agrees.
Nevertheless, in mid-river, the scorpion stings him, dooming the two of them.
When asked why, the scorpion explains, "I'm a scorpion; it's my nature."

Even Obama's own words betray him on that when he said that he wants

Americans have been conned by slick advertising regarding socialism.
Therefore they vote against their own self interest.

Could you please warn a fella before you say something like that?
I know that the Republican are technically, Americans.
But to see it said so all-of-a-sudden like that, it's just gross.

God dude, he was talking about government has only been there to serve
the wealthy and that it was now going to be geared to finally give the
little guy some respect, and government not exist to only favor the
corporate world.

I know that sounds SCARY, getting a fair break for once

One thing I found with right wingers is if you push bullshit while
acting hysterical and act if liberty is under distress that these
tragic dumbfucks will hysterically believe anything, and it gos on and
on. Meanwhile they aren't paying attention to anything 'their'
Republicans are doing in government, and are completely delusional
about Democrats.

I bet about 99% of these people never watched C-SPAN and what 'their'
Repubicans are doing in government let alone know what Democrats have
going.
