Forget Lady GaGa and the egg.

The Artist/Muse and I met up with friends Sunday night for the annual
"Slam the Grammys" hang. I've always had a love (radiohead top indie
album a few years ago) hate (jethro tull top heavy metal band?????)
relationship with the awards but some years ago when the Tull award
was givien that was it for me. So we put together this yearly slam
party because it really is funny to see what "america" likes in their
music.

But this year was different. In fact it was a Philly celebration. John
Legend/The Root's "Wake Up!" album (old school r+b reworkings of
60's-70's protest songs) won three awards. Plus Pink (also a Philly
product) won another Grammy for her mantlepiece.

But, perhaps, the best performance of the night came from a rapper
named Cee-Lo Green. (for those of you who don't know, Green has
credits such as Goodie Mob in his resume but you might actually know
him as one half of Gnarls Barkley)

Cee-Lo had a hit this past year with the song "F*** You."
On the show he performed the song (lyrics cleaned up) backed by none
other than..........The Muppets."

Wonder what Sarah thought?

I'm sure it was a stellar evening.

In the meantime, Carney rocked the house at the Bowery Ballroom on the
evening of February 14. Great musicians. Great vocals. Great venue.

Well, you got one out of three correct. The Ballroom is a great venue.
Carney (in my opinion) are a warmed over metallica-lite (in that they
think constant time signature changes equals great music)

I get their influences.
They don't do them justice.

Now "The King of Limbs" by radiohead?

brilliant.

None of their stuff sounds remotely like Metallica. They all
sight-read. Their material is varied and melodic.

I didn't say they sounded like Metallica, you moron.
I said they make use of constant, needless time sig changes to try and
make their sound more dramtic than it really is.

The next big thing?
Why?
Because the lead singer is Spiderman in what is fast becoming a bigger
joke than any Mel Brooks Broadway flop movie??? Is it because Glenn
dreck has been pumping the Spiderman musical?

You're an idiot.

"Dramtic"? How would you know why someone would do anything with
signature changes? Do you read music?

Your memory is short. I outlined that in my very first comments about
them. Go up a few lines and refresh your memory.

> Because the lead singer is Spiderman in what is fast becoming a bigger

Ticket sales don't indicate a flop. The show did $1.2 million last week
and it is still just in previews. The opening night is in mid-March.

> Is it because Glenn dreck has been pumping the Spiderman musical?

Glenn Beck, to my knowledge, mentioned the show once. So did Joan
Rivers but I don't care for her at all. So have lots of celebrities.
What does that have to do with anything?

I compared them to a band that uses a method to make their music sound
more dramatic.
And no, I don't read but I have spent part of my life as a DJ and I
think we might know something about mixing beats.
Once????

F*cking liar. Dreck was talking about it so much some publications

A DJ? You played records and suddenly you understand the motivation
behind a songwriter's change in key signature, meter and tempo?

That's like a guy who once sold paint explaining the reasoning behind
something Andrew Wyeth had done in a painting.

Yes, I make music. You don't have to be able to read music to make it.
Especially not in the last twenty years or so. I make very interesting

And yes, I play guitar, drums and keys. I just never took the time to

Are you saying that you only listen to people who can read? What if
you found out that Coltrane or Mink were never able to do so? Would
you think less of them as musicians??

Oh I surely do. It is a made up term for some dipstick rocking a record
back and forth on a turntable and pretending that he is playing a
musical instrument. You might as well be turning the volume up and down
on a transistor radio.

The transistor radio thing?
Yes, that would also be making music.

Turntablism is more sampling pieces of records and putting them
together to make music.
It can also be what you listed but that's more in the mode of
"scratching."

And no, I wasn't comparing myself to those people. I was merely
pointing out that great sounds can be made by someone who doesn't read
music.

So how's Claptrap doing with being the next big thing?

Dave Heil

If you want to make some great sounds, play a Chet Baker CD.

What are you talking about?

In turntablism you sample a part of the music, isolate one or two
instruments and build the composition in that manner. it has nothing
to do with 'turn it up" etc.

And yes, we do consider it art. Stockhausen once did a piece that was
built around the sounds of helicopter propellers.
Cage (and many others )have also made music using all kinds of found
sounds.

I notice that Camelia (whoops, meant carney) don't have anything in
Billboard's Top 200. Kind of hard to be the next big thing if no one
buys your stuff.

Chet Baker?
Brilliant stuff.
Terrific horn work and he had (in my opinion) a surprisingly good
voice.
Too bad he lost the batlle with his demons.

It has nothing to do with playing an instrument either. It isn't making
music at all.

Given that their CD was released last May and that the band has been in
New York working on Spiderman since last autumn, I don't find it unusual
that they aren't in the Top 200. Life isn't all about the Top 200.
Carney songs have been featured in two or three television drama series
and a couple of movies.

Any of your turntable stuff do anything?
