W. Richard "Dick" Tappan, former chairman and CEO of the Tappan Stove
Company in Mansfield, died early Tuesday at his home in the Pelican Bay
area. He was 92.

Mildred Tappan, his wife of 31 years, said the retired industrialist
had been ill for the past few weeks, but his death was unexpected.

The couple settled in Florida three years ago after living there on and
off for 30 years, she said.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but a memorial service will be
scheduled when all family members can be together, Mrs. Tappan said.
According to Dick Tappan's book "Cooking with the Tappans," he worked
for his family's company for 42 years in positions that included sales,
factory manager and director of engineering. He retired as chairman of
the board in 1980.

He had a master's degree from Denison University and an MBA from
Harvard University.

W.J. Tappan, Dick Tappan's grandfather, founded Ohio Valley Co., a
cast-iron stove manufacturer in Bellaire, Ohio, in 1881. After a fire
destroyed Ohio Valley, W.J. Tappan moved the business to Mansfield and
renamed it Tappan Stove Co.

In the 1930s, Tappan Stove Co. introduced the first porcelain enameled
stove and the insulated oven. It also invented the see-through oven
door and produced a mobile stove used by the military during World War
II.

The senior Tappan retired in the 1940s and turned the company over to
his son, A.P. Tappan, who ran it until his son, Dick Tappan, took over
in the early 1950s.

In 1955, Tappan Stove Co. manufactured the first microwave oven for
home use, which retailed for $1,200. A decade later, the company
manufactured the first combination conventional range and microwave
oven.

In 1979, AB Electrolux, a European manufacturing business, bought the
Mansfield business. Seven years later, Electrolux bought White
Consolidated Industries, which made Frigidaire, White-Westinghouse,
Gibson and Kelvinator products, then combined its Tappan holdings with
these new products to create the WCI Major Appliances Group. In 1991,
WCI became Frigidaire Co.

I just wish now that I had thought to include Julie "Tuppence"
Andrews on my pool entry.
