Joseph Wilhelm, 80, harbor-scene artist

Tuesday December 23, 2003

Joseph A. Wilhelm, a well-known local artist, died Monday of cancer at his
home in Covington. He was 80.

A native of New Orleans, Mr. Wilhelm retired from New Orleans Public Service
Inc. in 1979. He began his career as a marine ship modeler, and his models
today are widely collected. At the age of 51, he became a full-time painter,
known best for his detailed depictions of harbor scenes. His artwork is
displayed in public and private collections worldwide.

Mr. Wilhelm spent decades on Mississippi River docks photographing and
cataloging ships and he learned to pilot a steamer. His realistic and
accurate portrayals and documentation of the river and marine vessels won an
international audience for his artwork and its distinctive mirror of
photorealism.

Mr. Wilhelm was featured in the classic books "Marine Painting, Techniques
for Modern Masters" and "Bound for Blue Water, Contemporary American Marine
Art." His work also has been featured on numerous magazine covers. He was
often commissioned to paint portraits for steamship companies and private
collectors. A self-taught artist, he was a teacher and mentor to many other
painters.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Wilhelm; two sons, Stephen and Joseph
Wilhelm III; a daughter, Barbara Wilhelm Sterbcow; two sisters, Doris Lala
and Betty Wilhelm; and two grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 7
p.m. at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st St., Covington. Visitation
will begin at 5 p.m. Burial will take place at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
