MARIETTA, Ga. - Former Marietta Mayor Ansley Meaders died
Wednesday of an apparent heart attack while she was cooking
dinner at her home.
She was 59.
A Marietta native and member of one of the city's oldest
families, Meaders was first elected in 1993 and became the city's
third longest-serving mayor before she was defeated for
re-election in 2001 by current Mayor Bill Dunaway.
"She loved being the mayor," said Robert Meaders, the former
mayor's son and a Marietta school teacher. "She had a huge heart
and was concerned enormously about people through her work at the
city and in charities."
Dunaway called Meaders "a gracious mayor," saying he considered
her a friend despite defeating her in her bid for a third full
term in office.
"It broke her heart, I know, when she lost," Dunaway said. "But
she came to my victory party to congratulate me. That took real
nerve and she had it."
Following high school, Mrs. Meaders attended the University of
Georgia. She was a Bulldogs fan who attended UGA games with
friends every year. Before becoming mayor, she retired from a
career of more than 20 years in banking.
She was married to Frank Meaders, a Marietta engineer, and had
two children - a son and a daughter - and four grandchildren.
