Canadian radio announcer and voice-over actor CARL BANAS was born in 1929. He provided voices or many theatrical and TV cartoons, most notably as villains in the 1960s "Spider-Man" cartoons, and several voices in the 1964 "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" -- "WHY WEREN'T YOU AT ELF PRACTICED!!!"

If a TV luminary like Hugh Downs can be litanized here, why not the above two?

Thanks for Banas, but he hasn't turned 90 yet.

And as for Wouk...I'd say he's famous enough not to need the extra publicity, just as Jimmy Carter doesn't need to be on the writers' list, despite having written more than 30 books. (I doubt most people hear Wouk's name and think of his movies before they think of his books - if they're old enough to be familiar with him in the first place.)

Btw, Hugh Downs has written 14 books, according to Wikipedia, but I'm not about to put HIM on the writers' list either. However, as I've mentioned, the more obscure people who ARE acclaimed writers (Gerda Klein, Józef Hen) deserve the extra publicity, when they have movie connections. (Hen is also a director, but that's not what he's known for, in movies.)

* Though quite arguably I'm further wasting my already-far-too-wasted life by doing so, I remain proud that since about third grade I've been endeavoring (if the font ain't too tiny) to read EVERY opening AND closing credit of EVERY film, series episode or newscast/documentary I've watched. That's in part, of course, simply because I toiled professionally in The Business for decades and thus never know when some onetime acquaintance will turn up as a Best (or worst) Boy or Second Unit Director. But I sure wasn't working in showbiz back in late 1962 whilst navigating Kennerly Elementary's 3rd grade, so nosiree, this ain't just ego; rather, since early on I've found it fascinating how the work load is distributed in film and broadcast production.

I now assume you were referring to my author list, which is what confused me.

I suspect, at least, that when it comes to movie people - and juvenile writers - it's common enough for average people not to recognize those people's names, even if they recognize their movie titles or book titles. So I put those names on expanded lists. There's also the nostalgia factor to consider.

(Example: I've seen "Singin' in the Rain" at least five times, but I likely wouldn't have been able to answer the question "what is director Stanley Donen's most famous movie" right off the bat - and I may well forget the answer a year or two from now, even though I won't have any trouble answering for a few months, given his recent death.)

BUT...when it comes to writers for adults, I'd say the above rule doesn't hold true. (I do spell out who they are once they make it to 100, since I feel they've earned that right by then.) Writers for adults are often more famous than their individual book titles - think Noam Chomsky - but even the critically acclaimed writers don't always become household names, so if their names are not popular with the masses, chances are their books are not well known either. (Example: I had no idea how important the U.K. literary editor/memoirist Diana Athill was until I saw her long obit at the NY Times.)

So it doesn't really help for me to take the time to say that the late Nathan Glazer was a sociologist; anyone who wasn't at least slightly familiar with his name won't likely be interested to hear his occupation.
